Chances of Getting Domestic Upgrade (Melbourne to Perth) ?

Hi

I've put in a request to use points to upgrade my economy seat from Melb to Perth. Request is for business.

I've looked and there are currently 10 seats available in business but flight isn't until December.
When do they usually let you know? I've only ever 'bid' before so I don't know how the request upgrade option works.

Thanks,

  • What airline?

    What status tier are you?

    • +10

      Ansett, bankrupt tier

      • How are your Diners Club Ansett points?

  • +3

    12.63%

  • Haha.Qantas. No tier.

    • IN that case you have 2 chances - Buckleys and None.

      • I thought that was only the case for international?
I've had no tier before and won a 'bid' - where i've paid a couple hundred more for business upgrade.

        • Hey you might…. but definitely dont count on it. Business class upgrades MEL-PER is very popular.

      • Not true. If there are seats up to the day before they’ll let you know. You get to know about 24 hours before the flight.

Source: I upgraded over Easter. Have 0 status. Got a upgrade no issue.

        • Mel to Perth?

      • Yep. I'm gold and do that leg semi regularly. For night flights I generally put in for a business class upgrade and haven't got one this year (probably 5 tries).

  • The fact you had to put an upgrade request for a domestic is problematic. Because as the following points out domestic upgrades are granted at the time of request if space is available:

    https://www.qantaspoints.com/about/faq/-/faq/346_UPGRADE_FLI….

Theoretically there may be seats available to higher tier passengers. However I have a friend I travel with on Platinum and we rarely see any difference in our awards availability.

The closer to Christmas the more likely seats are to be reserved for paying customers. Last Christmas, storms in Sydney meant Virgin cancelled flights - my flight was delayed 9 hours then cancelled. A relative who went on standby ended up forking out $750 for her economy MEL-PER fare. Those business seats would have been very valuable for Qantas back then.

According to https://www.pointhacks.com.au/how-do-qantas-upgrades-using-p… you should receive priority over upgrade bids. But I've always been a little skeptical.

I put your chances as 1 in 12 before Dec 15th and 1 in 24 after.

So short version: I don't like your chances but you may find something comes up in the last 48 hours. If nothing does, there is still a good chance you'll walk on to the plane and find an empty business seat for the reasons stated in that second article.

  • I've got this upgrade 3 out of 5 times bris to melb , bronze only a few years ago. I do think the distance will make this flight a bit more popular though. Just give it a go you wont use any points if it doesnt work. I usually use od dollar or points amounts just so it may get me over the line compared to someone using even numbers :)

    • +1

Not the same though. There’s double the amount of seats Mel-bris per day. At peak time flights every hour. Not the case for Mel-per so less business seats on offer.

  • Red status, upgraded minimum from Adelaide to Perth. Got it. Good luck OP.

  • As a Bronze Frequent Flyer seeking an upgrade on an extremely popular route (MEL-PER), I'd rate your chances at about 5%, not knowing anything else. Higher if it is a day flight. Lower if it is a night flight.
