  The clock has a speaker and plugs into mains. No big deal.

  Why would you want an internal battery in a smart clock? you taking it camping?

    When the power goes out, it retains the time.
    On a smart clock this may be alleviated if it auto-updates the time like a smartphone does.
    
    Some alarm clocks may also still alarm when the mains power is off.
