Cutting The Grass. Edging or Mowing First?

Significant first world issue of course.

When mowing your yard do you trim the edges first or mow the main section and then trim what is left? Interested to see what the majority do.

I’ll leave what I do for a bit later to see whether I’m wrong or not!!

I mow first cause then I can see how much I need to edge (those extra bits that the mower can’t get to or misses)

the trees, edges and garden beds don't move so I know exactly where the mower is not going to get to. so I edge those parts first then blow before a mow, anything left on the path gets blown back onto the lawn again

Edge first - then mow over the cuttings from the edgings to mulch them and collect them in the grass catcher, and deliver them to the compost heap.

While i don't do this, it makes absolute sense to do it this way.

Though i mow first so it is done.. If i get time to edge, then great, if not, at least the mowing is done

Same, time and motivation being the limiting factor.

      I concur with ms_caz says.

This is what I do, and why

  • +3

Depends on who's grass you are cutting :)

  • +1

    edge, blow, mow.

    • -1

But then the mower spits grass where you've just cleaned?

      • not if you catch the clippings.

    • +1

And then blow again because I'm OCD

      • yup I do as well for a professional finish. :)

I mow first, I can then clearly see which parts of the lawn that the Mower couldn't reach.

I also never use a Grass Catcher, I use a Mulcher Mower, which apparently reduces your need to fertilise the Lawn by 20%!

    • and builds up thatch?
      .

      • I have been mulching my buffalo for the past 5 years with no problems.
As long as you have a decent mulching mower that leaves fairly small cuttings there shouldn't be a problem.

On the other hand a cheap mower may cause a bit of build up.

  • Poll seems to be headed the way I thought.

Yes, I edge first. That way the mower can either pick up or mulch up the edgings. Especially those extra log bits that seem to appear along some edges.

  • Ring up mower man, drink beer, hand fifty bucks

He Ozbargain is not strong in this one.

  • I get the kids to help. Luckily I have lots of kids and can erm 'supervise' from a distance.

  • get a horse and do neither

or get rabbit . It's cheaper.

or Nathan Lyon … or any other GOAT!

  • I have weeds throughout the lawn, killed it and mowed. I then edge which I failed and had something similar to Mr.Squiggly. then reattempted again and was straighter but did not bother to clear up the cut offs from edging.

My lawn is as patchy as a cow. Thanks organic slasher!

  • I've tried both over the past 12 years: mowing first gets you to do less edging after. so if you want to save time and energy, that's the way to go.

  • Don't edge.
    Don't catch.
    Don't blow.
Don't worry about "weeds" in the lawn.
    Looks decent enough to me.

Its much easier to do the edges after the lawn has been mowed.
Much like a hair cut - the edges are done last

  • Edge first.
Mower then picks up the bulk of the edge cuttings

  • Interesting poll results. It seems to be pretty close. A couple of times I’ve liked it has changed between edge first or mow first.

    Thanks all.

May your lawns be green and the edges straight.

  • rake, edge, blow, mow, blow,

  • Edge with power edger or whipper snipper ?

    • +1

      That’s a whole nother poll!

I use line trimmer. Inherited a power edger and used it a bit, but it was electric and running the cords around once I switched to battery mower was a pain. Battery trimmer, battery mower. Haven’t used petrol for home yard work since about 2013. All battery since about 2015.

      • Yes, I have been watch some YT videos and it seems a lot of professionals use a trimmer for edging.
Battery trimmer is what I think I will get.
