With all my free cooking and programming ebooks, I dread what Amazon will suggest for me now

Just be active and/or eat well? It's not rocket science if you work in a predominately sedentary position.

    • +27

Rocket science is easy compared to the intricacies of human psychology. We walked on the moon 50 years ago, but we still can't figure out how to make everyone motivated and happy.

      • +1

        Remove modern slavery.

        • Not sure amazon likes this idea!

      • -3

We walked on the moon 50 years ago,

How sure are you about that even? ;)

TL;DR: only rich people used to be overweight, now the rise of mass marketed convenience foods high in sugar fat and salt, and sedentary professions and lifestyles means people are getting fat.

These foods feel good, but are bad for us. So we should try and be aware of that when we eat, and continually remind ourselves to try and eat better. This will work better than drastic changes.

Apart from a tonne of unnecessary background information, grammatical and spelling errors, that's all I got from it.

Fat doesn’t make you fat. Try a ketogenic diet for a while and you will see that. I didn’t believe it either.

      • +11

Overeating fat can make you fat. Overeating carbs can make you fat. Overeating protein can make you fat.

Keto is not magic. If you don't track kcal, your body still will.

        • -2

The difference between carbs and fat/protein is the body has delayed satiety when consuming carbs which means people overeat when consuming a diet largely based on grains and sugar.

Most Australians eat a diet based on carbohydrates. The Government and the processed food sector says it's healthy to do this because their aim is selling as much crap as possible so they encourage overeating at all opportunities.

Then they blame the consumer for not exercising which is ridiculous because it's the food that's the problem.

They don't want to kill Australian's but if doing that makes the most money they're happy to do it.

        • I haven’t counted one calorie and it worked for me.

          • @furiousgeorge: Good for you. Most people are not about to cut out every single carb from their diet forever.

      • +1

Why not? Dr Atkins was saying this in the 70's.

      • +2

I was just summarising the book, and too much fat will 100% make you fat.

Low carb diets have also been linked to higher rates of colon and kidney diseases and cancer, so it's not a simple case if "protein, fat good. Carbs bad."

        • Ever tried to eat “too much “ fat? Without the carbs it’s difficult. Fills you up too quick and makes you feel a bit queasy.
Being overweight is linked with all sorts of bad things too. Choose your poison I guess.

    • "rich people used to be overweight". People try to be rich & get overweight, but not other parts!
Don't copy the rich. Be yourself & you might get rich with (spare) TIME.
      Simple solution:
Socialise in discussions, not eating/drinking. Invite for discussion, not coffee/drinks (& take your own water bottle ;)

I've found it's more sugar and processed wheat. Salt in the diet is necessary. Same with fats.

That being said it's a question of how much of each!

  • +1

Shooot, there's even a book for that.

  • You need a book to tell you how to track kcal? Seriously if you eat more than you need per day, the excess is stored as fat. There is no magic to it. Eating less is free. Medications can put on water weight at best.

    1. Cycle to work so you look like a proper IT hippie
    2. Use a standing desk, so you are using that thing called your core muscle
    3. Go out for lunch time run/walks instead of browsing OZB
    4. Drink them free sugar free fizzy drinks instead of free full sugar drinks
    5. Pace at the back of room during meetings to look like you are engaged and thinking but burn some calories at the same time
    6. Live off (lunch) on free office cracker snacks instead of your high caloried takeaways
      .

      Others?

      instead of browsing OZB

Please hand over your ozb license.

    • This is the kind of advice I imagine the book would offer. Terrible tips tailored for people with absolutely no idea how to eat or exercise.

    • Some great advice. You can walk outside while browsing OZB on your phone and listen to music (Just don't walk on road and don't forget sunscreen and hat). Cut off sugar entirely and work towards a keto diet if you can.

    • can't do number 6. Office doesn't provide cracker or snacks.

    • +1

Go out for lunch time run/walks instead of browsing OZB

I think most IT people browse OZB during work hours so it might be a good idea take a break during lunch time.

stress make you Overweight NOT food

    • Er no but high, prolonged stress levels that most people persue in the name of being "busy" so that they can buy stuff to have people like them makes discipline difficult or impossible.

Willpower behaves like a finite quantity and is tied to the emotional system. If you are stressed all the time you do not have much willpower.

Most people have lowered serotonin levels from stress. Serotonin literally allows you to feel connected to other human beings and not having enough is to experience loneliness and misery.

Guess what sugars and carbs do? They cause a spike in serotonin.

    • That's easily falsifiable. Stress may be a contributing factor but food is absolutely what makes you overweight. People just like to blame something other than their diet choices (myself included at times, so not judging), but the only way any will ever overcome their weight issues is by accepting the fact that what you eat is the primary factor.

  • So the title suggests that there's a right way to become overweight..

Seriously we need a book to tell you how not to be fat?

We are homo sapiens, gifted with the wherewithall to look after ourselves and make the right decisions.

    • +3

gifted with the wherewithall to look after ourselves and make the right decisions.

…youve seen the 'food deals' that get posted here, right?

    • With enough force you can break anything. Why do you think squillions are spent to override human reasoning and encourage people to eat crap?

    • We're gifted with the ability to make the right decisions, but in the modern era where whatever we want is available whenever we want it, our subconscious processing does us no favours. In the past, eating fat and sugar and carbs whenever we could was instinctive and necessary for our survival. Now that we can easily consume 4-5000 calories a day without even blinking it's very different.

  • Too late :(

OK I'm offended. WHY IS IT SPECIFICALLY FOR IT industry????

  • I’m going to say two words to you right now. I want you to listen to them very, very carefully. Then I want you to take them out of the office with you and incorporate them into your life.

    Stop it!
