 - it is a much better offer than qantas for travel from melbourne to hongkong, as cathay pacific offers direct flight while qantas have to transfer at sydney and brisbane. - Sydney AND Brisbane!
 Sounds like a nightmare flight!
;) - qantas do have a direct flight to/from honkers from melb, but times aren't as good.
 - wonderland, no wonder.. - CX: http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_AU/manageyourtrip/schedu…
QF: http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/timetable/global/en- schedules change on/around Oct 1 and Oct 31 - timings-wise, I'd say QF have it better.

 - QF29/30 (continuing to LHR) go from/to MEL. It's a perfectly fine flight (I take it several times a year on the way to LHR). :)

 - great deal!
 - Pretty good. Shit thing is people don't know when they finish their exams!
 - Super deal! What can't they release exam timetables sooner.
 - Good deal, normal non-sale prices are closer to 1.1k ex-Sydney so there's some significant savings on the normal fares with this (and the Qantas) sale - Up to the consumer if you prefer CX's better service (imo) vs QF's more comfortable seat (CX has the hardshell seats in Y which do not recline backwards) - Do you get 'free' lil bottles of liquor with Cathay's service in Economy?
 - they slide down, which does the job fine i guess…. - QF has really shit entertainment systems don't they? - CX's AVOD has a far broader range than QF's if that's what you value during a flight. - CX also has in-seat power supply if you prefer to bring your laptop and watch your own media, not too sure about QF

 - do also note that you earn 0 frequent flyer points (with this fare) on CX, whereas you accrue full points with all QF fares. - and even if you did earn points on CX, they'd be less than what you'd get on QF if you had to take a connecting domestic flight first (e.g. Mildura-Melbourne), because you always earn at least 1000 QF points per flight - Wait.. so I get no Asiamiles points? - You get full Asiamile points, but if you are a Qantas FF member, you get half the points if you fly Cathay as far as I am aware
 - @mustkill: Correct, as per my booking tests and http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_AU/manageyourtrip/online… - @Crowdedthehouse: are you sure about full AM points? - As for earning AM on QF flights, or QFF on CX flights, as per http://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn/partners/airline/cathay-… and http://www.asiamiles.com/am/en/earn/aircalculator, you'll earn only half the points given these are sale fares (which is a good idea if you're flying CX ;)

 - For some reason the 2012 dates aren't cheap - 1 word = Carbon Tax

 - wow…………3 weeks ago it was 1400++, but 3 months ago it was 800 or less? relieved i had waited till today……was about to purchase it a week ago, before it gets closer to my travel date …..
 - Strange, i looked up March 1 - 15 - Return = $888 (Good luck in chinese)
 Single = $4567 - ROFL…. $4567!?
you've got to be kidding! - Probably $4567… somehow in Asia the return tickets are more expensive than return flights. I have be caught by that before thinking one way is just half the price of return. - That might be in HK$? Still more exxie than half price but definitely more reasonable than $4567AU! >_<

 - Evidence: http://imageserver.hk/cxpecials/image_ecx_110720/ecx_110720_… - This is a CX e-mail - and there is a current special going to China… - so if you dont want HK you can probably get yourself across the border by plane. - Travel period: 20 July to 16 November 2011
Booking deadline: 29 July 2011- so it probably does not have any connection to OP deal… but hey, if you dont want HK check out these…
 - so cheap i want to go back
 - Just booked it. Thanks mate :D
 - Will they have this deal or similar for travel next year? - Looking at my crystal ball I can predict that multiple volcanos will erupt so no. :)

 - So these are return tickets? I'm very tempted
 - are these prices for single tickets? or does it includes return?
if return we can come back when ever we want? - Almost whenever you want, go to the site, and see what the return times are. I chose 04/09 out, 16/09 back.

 - Does anyone know how long this deal will last for? - 3 Aug 2011 - Could a mod/OP add this to the deal? Cheers

 - So… this week I bought the same ticket Syd-HKG for ~$1260.
I took the flight I found to Flight Centre to see what they could do, and they beat it by $40 or so. After purchasing I saw this deal, and the same flight, same time is available for $888.- Flight Centre say that they couldn't see the special. (at the time, and now)
Cathay say the special has been running all week.
Flight Centre say they cannot cancel the ticket.
Cathay "can't" deal with me directly, and both tickets are "special" and are non-refundable.- So… I effectively got stiffed ~$400 within a day or two, when by all rights I should have been entitled to this deal?
sigh- I can confirm that this is an incredibly good deal, having bought the more expensive tickets for no apparent reason. - Bad luck man. I bought today and got the $888 flight.

 - mmm shouldve price-matched at Flight Centre =/

1 buck cheaper than qantas heheheh
