  • Budget…?

    • $500 I know its pretty low, but I was kind of keeping my fingers crossed that I might get lucky as it's getting close to Christmas.

    • Thanks ShortyX one of my friend have a Wharfdale, but on Whirlpool Forum, I didn't see good reviews for Wharfdale. So a bit unsure on it.

  • Not sure what happened above; but I can recommend this; https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/YAMAHA-NS-SW300-SUBWOOFER-BLACK-…

Bought mine from this seller; looked as new. Plus can get it cheaper with eBay codes. Subwoofer has very good reviews.

    • Thanks Beaver2233

      • Just a note, if you missed out on that specific one keep an eye on the seller - they regularly update/relist these (that's assuming you are interested).

        • beaver2233 I am looking at the seller on ebay.
          Thanks a lot again

    • They are trying to sell 2x Dali E12-F’s for $999 each.

They were $575 in this deal.

  • FB Marketplace

    • Have seen some on FB, but most of them say what you see what you get. It's kind of hit and miss with some of them.
One guy was selling a Paradigm sub 12" with 2 X speakers but doesn't want to sell them separate.

  • which state are you located?

    • In Canberra mate.

  • +1

I asked a similar question myself in forums awhile ago, and the conclusion reached was spend the extra for a SVS subwoofer and you will keep it for life.

    • How much are the SVS $1000 plus easy. I have heard about them, they are pretty darn tough. If you know of a deal for SVS please do let me know.

      TIA

      • Just posted deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/492592

Here is a link to all the SVS models on-sale.

SB-1000 is cheaper here though, maybe you can get them to price match.

        • thanks a lot margejsimpson

          • @Sumeet79: Worth noting Black Friday / Cyber Monday is a few weeks away.

            • @thebadmachine: @margejsimpson thanks a lot. I will be definitely looking into it.
I have kind of narrow down my criteria to 2 brand names.
SVS PB-2000 as you suggested and Klipsch KLR R-120SW, KLR R-100SW & KLS SPL-120B.

All my ceiling speakers are Klipsch R 3850 & 5800. I have about 9 in the house (3 zones) with Denon 4500H.
              I am bust now. lol

looking for the best deals possible:)

              • @Sumeet79: As far as I know the Klipsch ‘R’ series are for ‘reference’ so accuracy over power.

Seems you have a large setup (whole house) so you may want to go for power (Klipsch SPL-series / SVS PB-series).
Klipsch is also a big American brand (sometimes seen as ‘budget’ in the US since they sell them at WalMart etc), but SVS seems to be a bullet-proof company for subwoofers.

                • @thebadmachine: True that, but I will be mainly using my Sub for main area 5.1.

SPL are $1699 a bit expensive than SVS PB 2000. I am just hoping to get a good deal in a month or two.

Thanks for your input. Also if you see any good deals, do let me know on this thread.
Much appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
                  Cheers

                  • @Sumeet79:

but I will be mainly using my Sub for main area 5.1.

In that case you may be just fine with the compact SB-1000 (so as to be kind to the neighbours), or PB-2000 if you want the full cinema experience.

The PB-2000 has a built-in DSP which prevents any damage happening to the amplifier or woofer, also has multiple DSP adjustments to customise the bass output.
From a quick look at the Klipsch SPL-120, it looks like it is lacking this feature.

I have heard good things about higher-end Klipsch subwoofer’s, similar claims of ‘wall-shaking bass’ as SVS.
Also awhile ago Klipsch acquired “Energy Speakers” which were a solid young subwoofer company using proven science in their cabinet-design, so with their subwoofers at the least they know what they are doing (I think it shows in the smaller overall size of the cabinet with comparable output to the SVS).

                    • @thebadmachine: What was your confession?!

                      • @spackbace: If you are genuinely interested, basically a short true story which involved lying to a magician and having the magician continue the trick as if everything was fine. Therefore I was the only one who knew something was terribly wrong and to this day the questionable event enters my mind and it feels as is there is a permanent error imprinted on reality.

The story was received poorly, with it being reported as “spam” due to people thinking the story was made-up or had very little point to it.
I find comfort in the pointless and incongruous, but it appears many find it disturbing when they fail to identify any ‘reason’ or purpose.

                        • @thebadmachine: A little bit of curated musical nerdiness for you, margejsimpson.

Comments closed in this thread of yours.
I too lament the nearly demise of Minidisc. I still own a working deck and a couple of hundred discs. I think that I may have read somewhere that the BBC still has thousands of discs variously archived.

Remarkable tech, and actual recordings will outlast many manufactured CD's, and all of the dye-based ones. Means to play the discs figure with a less certain future.
                          One machine still in production.
TEAC, certainly in Japan, never I gather a seller of any of the real lower-end gear otherwise associated with the brand, here. Other components are still being sold albeit also not here

I think that I can remember seeing maybe a couple of dozen different pre-recorded titles all up, in travels. Variously surprising here, though :)

The "first ever minidisc only release" did happen, I remember that.

Gave that one a miss. Can listen to it on youtube, if keen.

Stumbled upon that Vaporwave is apparently going to resurrect the format. I wish them well.
I've heard much worse lift/elevator muzak than this track, still within the genre I believe.

Enjoy these. Gescom, keen link to Autechre. CD's worth owning and there are quite a few others that you may well discover -
                          Tri Repetae
                          Anvil Vapre
                          Flutter
                          Key nell

As to your story? Yes, a bit of a smartarse and unfortunate thing to have done in the moment, but reckon that something you should readily forgive yourself for at this point. Do that.

Yes I mentioned the same in my old comment if I remember correctly, the Deck I have records through Digital Toslink input, so I am able to make a 1:1 copy of a CD’s data (probably as good as the MiniDisc releases) .
In a certain recording format, the quality does match that of a CD (16bit / 44.1khz RedBook).
I confirmed my unit can do this format on the MiniDisc Wiki page if you are interested in a good read.

It is a shame though, since I did once imagine myself using the few top-end blank MiniDiscs I have kept in storage, only to have moved on straight to Digital Files by ripping the CD’s instead. I have been spoilt by just using the touch-screen instead of handling MiniDiscs.

Yes, a bit of a smartarse and unfortunate thing to have done in the moment,

Yes maybe I forgot some details. Basically I lied, because the card the Magician showed me was the wrong card, but under the pressure to keep everyone happy (and the trick moving on) I answered “yes that’s my card”. And the magician took it under his wing and ran with it.
Seemingly the magician guessed everyone else’s card correctly, and at the time it bothered me, then I forgot about it. But it still I remember it once in awhile.
I am a bit weary of sorcery anyway, in some places it would be punishable by death. Think about that next time someone asks you to pick-a-card.

                            • @thebadmachine: Ending there a bit of a twist and even lesser reason to be concerned by the event. A strong chance that the running with it was the magician mildly surprised - as intending initially to fail in the trick with you, only to then pull the correct card from a different location. Many variations just like that go on in order to mix things up. Showbiz, margejsimpson…

That said, plenty of magic around, keep your eyes and ears peeled for that.

I think that I purchased most every brand and type of Minidisc. I recall no actual technical basis for any real advantage from the more expensive ones above and beyond the regular TDK, Sony, Maxell. Novelty only.

Different for cassettes. I have some TDK and Scotch Metal tapes in their wrappings. Might be worth something and might find out at some point!
                              :)

You may be right it may all be marketing. But at the time I was planning well ahead, so I bought the premium ones (gimme a sec I am going to pull one out of the box) “Sony ES” is the disc type, it’s an all white opaque cartridge with some gold highlights on the logo and the words “High Quality”.

I only had 4 brand-new sealed ones left.. I had already recorded on most of them oh well I can erase them if I need to.
The Sony ES discs only came in 74 mins capacity I remember that.

And I have a bunch of standard MiniDiscs which are all different colours with transparent cartridges so you can see the disc inside. These standard ones came in 74 & 80 mins capacity. Had a random “Maxwell” brand one and the rest are all “Sony” with varying words on them like “Bianca” and “Shock-Proof Coating” whatever that is.
I put these standard ones to good use back when I was young, and thought I was ‘hip’ with the tiny square MiniDisc Walkman which had super battery-life and was completely shock-resistant (I actually remember deliberately strongly shaking the player and was able to make it skip / run out of buffer).

Anyway my guess at the time thinking ahead was, if I was putting them in storage for the future, that the expensive ones would be more resistant to wear & hold their data better.

                                • @thebadmachine: The chances remain excellent should you still wish to add to your collection, margejsimpson :)

Recording/editing/playback features and portability at the time, main drawcards for the format. Integrity of recordings just a great bonus.

                                  • @[Deactivated]: Interesting thanks. Stock seems limited, probably the very end of the line.

Really does seem like a melancholy moment of nostalgia, a format only for those who wish to return to the past for a brief moment.
I will end this conversation here.

                  • @Sumeet79: Klapp AV currently has a sale on as well.
