Kogan DC Motor Mini LED Air Cooler $39 Delivered @ Kogan

61

Probably a piece of crap but far cheaper than any comparable product.

Claims to dehumidify but I call BS on that given the fact that it has a water tank; it most likely does the opposite and works as an evaporative cooler.

Dehumidifiers have water tanks to collect excess air moisture

    • +1

      Interesting..I take it back then.

      • +15

Nah. Don't take it back. You are right. From the item description:

Fill up the water tank, plug into a USB port and the Kogan DC Motor Mini LED Air Cooler keeps the air cool, dehumidifies airflow and traps dust, pollen and other allergens while doubling as an ambient nightlight with a touch of colour.

If you are filling the tank and it is using that water to cool the air, it is adding water to the air and increasing humidity.

        I also smell BS here.

In this case though.. its 8 watts.
Thats not enough to run a peltier cooler, let alone a refrigerant cycle, so unless this thing uses a replenishable desiccant, it was probably a mistake.
All evidence points to this being just a computer fan and a wicking bed in a box.

  • Stupid question. are DC motor fans supposed to be better?

    • +1

They're meant to be quieter and more efficient because they allow low speeds but most of these advantages only happen with large fans.

  • yeah a waste of money, it might be a portable evaporative cooler, but it isn't going to do much if anything at all.

      Just like full-sized ECs 😀

      • Full sized ECs can work well if the dew point is below a certain amount, I've used a window mounted one to cool an entire house. That was in the desert though, with low relative humidity, worked amazingly well.

Just curious, how is it a bargain if it’s so clearly a piece of crap? Bargain landfill?

    • +2

      Bargain landfill?

      Yeah!

    • +1

      It's a Sunday morning.
If ever there was a period to post crap, this would be it. This and Thursday nights are always slow

      • Ok, but it’s still not a bargain if it’s essentially useless.

A little bit of nonsense now and then,
is relished by the wisest Men

@outlander: Bro, useless plastico landfill trash is not nonsense.

This is not some whimsical sunday comic strip. This stuff and endless pointless stuff like it is a substantial social and environmental problem.

Not only that but it’s duping people who can ill afford it out of their cash and $39 is no small chunk of change for many people and is not any kind of bargain.

              @0jay: but..but it has 7 coloured LED lights. 7!

  • Is this the lowest price for a piece of crap?

  • Have a look on aliexpress, ebay, etc. and you'll see there are lots of similar products. Some of them are called personal air cooler, or have similar names. The idea is that they only cool a small area near where the fan breeze is felt. This Kogan one claims to dehumidify though, which the others don't seem to have.

These things cannot cool a whole room as someone noted above with the 8 Watts of power consumption. I do wonder if they could provide some relief if you were sitting at a desk with one right next to you, or perhaps on a bedside table blowing onto you while you were sleeping on a very hot night. For $39 though, it's not worth finding out. There are ones on Ebay a little over half that price.

  • This is the sort of description we need to stop us from spending unnesscessary money

    • Just a bit of whimsical sunday nonsense.

      $39 well spent

"Fan with water reservoir, great for growing Legionella"

  • I believe it has a paper-ish “cartridge” which draws water from the reservoir to stay moist, whilst a fan is blowing through it.

Basically a larger usb fan, just with a slightly damp, cooler breeze.

  • +1

Don't waste your money, even it's really cheap.I did read some reviews.

  • Might be useful for cooling a hamster cage? or something smaller.

But "dehumidifies"!? That is a bald-faced lie.
