6 months rearward facing really isn't good enough.
We've got 4 car seats all up so couldn't get the best every time but even getting a reasonably cheap seat, you can still get ERF to average 30months.

In a quick search, for the same price, this would be a safer option…but i'm sure there's more options out there. No idea how the seat in this deal is a $300 RRP.

    • Why isn't 6 months rear facing good enough?

I've got this seat and it's worked perfectly well for us.

Do some reading on forward vs rearward facing and internal decapitation. Rear facing is by far the safer choice as a baby/toddler's head makes up around 25% of their body weight and their neck muscles aren't developed to support the sudden transfer of weight in the event of an accident. Most studies show it is 5 times safer to have them rearward.

It's like comparing a middle lap belt to a lap sash, there's a reason why the laws change and you can legally run rearward facing up to 4 years, depending on their size.

It may work perfectly well for you but if I was involved in a serious accident and my choice of car seat affected my child's life in any way, I would not forgive myself.

        • Fair enough, you can keep the baby rear facing in this too until a certain height, we kept our boy in their for 12 months easily.

I don't see that one you posted in stock anywhere near me, but I agree safety should be paramount.

Costco also has a baby seat for $145, not sure of the details though.

Instead of saying 6 months, they should really say rearfacing until shoulder height 32cm (happy to be corrected on this, but I believe it's the same as the old Mothers Choice Emperor). The "standard" rearfacing to 6 months is 35cm, and the BabyLove EzySwitch listed below for $10 more is rearfacing to 39cm.

Good luck if you have a longer than average torso child and outgrow it before 6 months and need a new seat as it's illegal to forward face before then.

    • Your recommendation / "safer" option seems to have a poor CREP rating

      • It was a 2 minute search for something at the same price but ERF. I think any seat selling for $150 is going to have a pretty average rating really.

      • CREP still can't take into account active head restraint/being rearfacing/harnessed for longer as being safety features, consistently decide if ISOFIX is safer (one seat got an extra star in ISOFIX mode, all the others didn't), or explain why giving the same seat a different fabric/name makes it safer. It's generally a CRAP rating system. By virtue of being extended rearfacing, a seat is capable of being safer.

        • I'm starting to get a little worried now, should we be getting seats that are rated well and are rear facing for the first 4 years?

          • @TEER3X: No and yes.

No, don't look at the CREP ratings. Every seat sold in Australia is very safe because it passed our standards testing, which is one of the best in the world. Some just need to be turned forward facing earlier and will work perfectly fine, but a young child can't tolerate as much crash force as an older one with stronger neck.

Yes, rearface for as long as possible. I got to over 3 years.

Generally, Mothers choice seats have lower height markers than the other brands. Plus lack a lot of other features (impact protection, etc). And the parent company (IGC Dorel) has had some recalls recently.

Would be better with a Babylove Ezy Switch from Kmart or Baby Bunting (https://www.babybunting.com.au/product/babylove-ezy-switch-e…) or (https://www.kmart.com.au/product/ezy-switch-convertible-car-…).

I had a Mothers Choice seat (Carrera) from one of these 50% off Target sales about 8 years ago so they come around fairly often. My seat was one of the last ones to the old standard, which was by weight not height, but even then my child outgrew the seat way before they ever reached the weight limit.

    Good price but no ISOFix

    • I ended up buying the safe n sound quick fix for $349 from target (used the $10 newsletter sign Up voucher). It has ISOFix and will fit in a small car. Identical to Britax Brava.
