Kia Seltos GT-Line - Considering to Buy

Hi,

Been in the market for a new car for a while (not required immediately but in the next 2-4 months would be nice). Budget of $35-$40k (retail price of around $42.5k with metallic paint) including some optional accessories like boot liner, dash mat etc. Leaning towards the newly released Kia Seltos GT-Line (currently ticks all the boxes in relation to my requirements except for electrically operated tailgate and tyre pressure monitoring system but not a deal breaker). Will be going for a test drive and physical look at it soon.

Have never owned a Kia make car before (previously have owned Toyota, Suzuki currently have an Audi and a VW) so wondering what your thoughts and feedback are. How's the 7 year car care plan (warranty, capped price servicing and roadside assist)? When you get the car serviced by a Kia dealer (to maintain the 7 year warranty I believe) do they increase the cost by adding hidden service surprises? How's the real world urban driving fuel economy, is it similar to what the manufacturer states in the specifications?

In relation to the drive away price listed on the Kia website versus dealer negotiation, in your experience when you purchased a new Kia how much did they budge? I haven't discussed pricing with any dealer yet of course as I'm yet to test drive it.

Have also never purchased a newly released model of a car before either, but I believe Kia has been selling the Seltos in overseas markets for a short while and good reviews online thus far. No defects or recalls yet either I believe (Takata airbag maybe).

Thanks!

Hey mate, i have been having a look at it aswell. I'm defintely changing the colour as i don't like yellow but i have been having trouble picking between the top spec GT-line and the Sports plus 2.0L Seltos. The considerations i have is that the 1.6L Turbo is not a very good engine, however its nearly 9 grand difference for bigger wheels, hud display, heated & cooled seats and an extra safety feature. Also the price pushes it into the realm of reliable toyota and mazada cars.
P.S. I havn't tried any dealer negotiation yet, but if you get any dealer quote, let us know.

Why is the 1.6L Turbo no good what's wrong with the engine. It's the same one as in the Cerato GT and the i30 N Line ain't it.

      • -4

The turbo needs to idle after heavy use, so you can't simply pull up to a parking spot and turn the car off. Also the engine is not very efficient at all compared to competitors like Toyota and Mazda.

          That's old school thinking.

You just have to drive "normally" for the last few minutes. If the Kia engine is like a VW (and I'm sure it is) the radiator fans will stay on after shutdown and the electric coolant and oil pumps will cut in for a while. Source: me- have been stuffing about with modified VW turbo engines for the past 12 years.

          • @brad1-8tsi: This. I have a Turbo Swedish made vehicle over 15 years old. It has fans and radiators that kick in post ignition off. I'd be surprised if these modern copycat engines from the korean makers haven't followed suite. Source; none except my old banger :)

              @wiipantz: @wipantz

              I agree. It's proven tech.

Idle down was what they had when i did my apprenticeship in the early 80s as the cars ran mineral oil and crap bearings in the turbo

            • @wiipantz: Please tell me its a Volvo 850 estate, love those things after the British Touring Car Championship in the 90s.

PS turbos now are oil cooled and will cycle oil through venturi effect when turned off.

            • @wiipantz: Yeah, the SAAB's had this over 25 years ago.

    • I have a KIA pro_ceed GT, the 1.6L twin turbo 150kw engine is a gem. Computer says to use 5th gear going hill at 60kph, revs at 1500rpm and easily still accelerate uphill. Drive it like I stole it and comes back with a average fuel economy of 7.5L

So no 1.6L GDi is great engine.

      • -3

So in comparision the Mazda 2.2l 4 cyl diesel has a fuel economy of 5.7 Litres, 140kw engine in comparison to 130kw and delivers 450Nm torque comparison to 265 Nm. Worse thing is that it has a similar price.

        • 0 to 100 in 7.4s but most of all its fun hot hatch. I didn't buy it to be cheap, I have a pushbike for that.

Want fuel economy buy a Prius, diesels are miserable cars to drive IMO

Ps letting turbo idle comment is complete BS

          • -4

@Bid Sniper: Read Gareth comment below and watch the video he has attached. Doesn't sound like b.s if you do a bit of research. How much did u pay for your Pro_ceed GT car and what year?

            • @Will Mcdonald: After 2 misleading statements from you, I dont need to watch that clown for more BS.

So tell me more about your ice cream van engine mazda.

              • -1

@Bid Sniper: Didn't you get banned a while ago for trolling? The fact that you think the kia pro_ceed is a quick car, is pretty funny. You still avoided the question what was the price you paid for it and what year model was it?

        • +3

to compare a diesel with a petrol is not particularly useful as they deliver their power in very different ways.

  • No problems with Kia, great well engineered and built products. No manufacturer with any sense would offer a 7 yr warranty if the thought they had dud products. I have a ql sli diesel awd Sportage .. it has been great, and no argy bargy with my servicing!.

    • Thanks :)

  • I recently bought a 2014 KIA pro_ceed GT as a daily, never was interested in the brand before a saw Stinger up close, same with Hyundai and I30N.

First week of ownership, amazed at the performance and handling. Build quality is solid, lot of thought into the design. Fuel economy is amazing. Easy to service, lot of great features and never expected a KIA to have. Ive driven a 2017 Polo GTI and the KIA is a better car overall IMO Only downside is the badge but this is what Japaneses cars use to be, BFYB reliable quality cars that were really trying.

The one I got has extended warranty, so still has warranty to 2022. Since its still under warranty I be dropping it off for the 50K service, quoted $212. I know screwbaru charge $300.

    • +1

Thanks :) I did't know they sell extended warranty on top of the default 7 years!

      • Yeah I didn't either, I bought the car thinking it had no warranty. Checked the papers and was pleasantly surprised.

Also the warranty is fully transferable to next owner, can be done online.
        https://www.kia.com/au/owners/warranty.html

Small caveat is battery only has 2 year warranty, had to replace mine as it wasn't running as well it should be. Real easy 3min job.

          Sounds good :)

If you say 2-4 months, buying in Early 2020 will have 'plate clearance' deals on 2019 stock - If you don't mind slightly lower resale for "older" vehicle.

    • Ah yes, good call. Though I think this particular model will only start from 2020 onwards since it's newly released. Currently only available for test drive with deliveries happening next year I think. I'll find out more from the dealer when I go for the test drive!

  • You might want to look at this Youtube review from AutoExpert

I'm more of a sedan guy, but I wouldn't have any issue with going Kia. My mum and a friend both have Cerato's and have had no unusual issues. Of course our local dealer (regional WA) is good.

    • Thanks :)

I've seen his video. He compares the new Seltos to a current Cerato. Even though they are comparable in size and the $$$ difference in favour of the Cerato, the amount of tech in the Seltos is above and beyond the Cerato. So I think it's worth the premium.

@Will Mcdonald "The turbo needs to idle after heavy use, so you can't simply pull up to a parking spot and turn the car off."

Think you are living way in the past.

Read Gareth comment and watch the video he has attached.

  • OP: You don't need to get servicing done at dealer to maintain warranty. You do if you wish to retain the "free" roadside assistance.

Ex-wife has a 2016 Cerato 2.0 auto. She thinks it's great even though her previous cars were generally top-spec fleet cars in the $50k price bracket.

She says the local dealer is fine, she doesn't get any surprises when she pays the bill.

Her main gripe is that the 2.0 Auto is heavy on fuel. She does lots of short trips and traffic jams.

    • Ah wow, good to know. For some reason, I thought you had to get it serviced by a Kia dealer to maintain the 7 year warranty. Thank you :)

Yeah fuel consumption (urban rating) on the specifications paper for the 1.6L turbo engine is around 9L/100km. I don't think it has the start/stop engine feature to reduce fuel consumption when idling in traffic jams. Maybe that's a good thing to avoid having to replace expensive AGM batteries?

      • +2

Stop/Start sucks and doesn't appear to make that much difference on the cars I've had it in. What you save on fuel gets spent 3x over on batteries.

You can't beat physics and getting a 1.5 tonne vehicle moving takes fuel. I have a 1.8 turbo manual in a 1450kg vehicle. I get 6l/100km on the highway and 9l/100km around the city. That the way it is and fuel isn't my major cost. Insurance and depreciation cost much more.

I just purchased a Subaru Impreza 2018 - S (top spec) dealer demo (34K new - Bought for 26K) I had my sights on the Kia Cerato GT (could manage 31$ DW)
IMO, the Subaru was far superior in cabin/drive comfort and overall feel. again, fit for my needs but might be worth checking out if you haven't considered Subaru

    • +1

Nice! Haven't considered it, will go for a test drive!

  • Is this available to test drive, I was emailed expected mid Nov
My wife has the Cerato Gt, decent driver

    • I think the dealer mentioned they should have it tomorrow onwards for test drive.

      • Spoke to dealer, it is available in all the different specs to test drive immediately :)

  • Also have been keeping close eye on this

  • Does anyone have an idea of the sort of discount they'd offer with some haggling?

Are they likely to drop a few hundred? a few thousand? Would they throw in extras?

Any idea on the finance rate they offer?
