2,500 Telstra Plus Bonus Points for Setting up "Direct Calling" (Telstra Phone Calls from Google Home/Nest)

1000

For those who got the 10,000 welcome points and have been on a peasant-tier subscription since then, these extra 2,500 points could push your balance out to 15,000 points, enabling you to quality for 2 free Google Nest Minis.

I don't quality because I set up direct calling as soon as it was available, otherwise I'd have enough points for that deal :(
I hope this helps someone else.

To be clear: this allows people who have a mobile phone with Telstra to make calls from their Google Home. Boost reportedly works too, but they don't get Telstra Plus points.

Official Instructions for setting up Voice Activated Calling are here.

  • I don't have a Google assistant enabled device to avail this offer :(

  • How do I go about setting up direct calling? Your link just takes me to the home page…

    • +1

I put the link of the offer as main link. I just added a link for the instructions

  • +1

go to the Telstra mobile calling section
    where is this section

  • I don't have the nest version. Does it mean i still can set it up on the 1st gen then? The extra credit is what i needed to get the 2xnest deal.

    • Yep. I have it set up on my GHM

      • +1

Nice, will set it up today then. 2xnest promo, here i come! Thanks

  • I have 15,000 Telstra points but don't see the attraction to getting the nest mini bundle

    • +2

Save it for a more intriguing items then. Mind you, those items will cost more than 15k. Hence, the bundle is popular amongst the ozb community as it is hard to rack up that much points through telstra.

      • A guy I work with racks up something like 3500 a month. Got everything with them…tried to tell him to switch but he CBF'd.

  • Hmm can this be 'activated' without having a Google Home/Nest?

    • +2

Well, it can't, and without having one of those you wouldn't really need it either.

      • Nicely said. To the point.

      • +1

Well, I just want the points haha

      • +3

Need home/nest for points, need points for home/nest. Vicious cycle :/

  • Does this feature work even with iPhone users or is it independent of your phone?

  • How long they usually take to update the points? :)

    • 2-3 days from activation or payments

  • +1

cool, voice calling from google home works with boost. just no telstra plus

    • If you create the Telstra account beforehand, you can link the Boost service to it. (Linking it while you create the account won't work however)

I'm not sure you can properly earn points on it however.

      • I tried to create a telstra plus account but it wouldnt let me :(

  • I linked long ago but still can’t call the nest hub from my phone.

    • +3

It works the other way around buddy….

      • What you mean so my nest Hub max can’t receive my video calls? Then what’s the “call home” feature for?

        • the other home

        • You can only call outbound from your nest/hub/device only.

  • This doesn't work if your Telstra account is with home phone only right? There's no way around this?

    • Correct. Need a mobile service

Obviously putting your numbers into Google Home causes the user to lose money.

  • Wow it works on my home mini.

But I can’t figure out if there’s a way to hang up a call other than by saying ok google hang up the call.

But I can’t figure out if there’s a way to hang up a call other than by saying ok google hang up the call.

      that's the only way

  • wow, it is working.
but, why do I only get 1000 points for the welcome points?

    • Because I think the 10,000 Welcome points offer expired a few days ago.

Be warned telstra calling does not work on non Google branded devices, eg Lenovo or JBL

    • Well that explains why my JBL Link View always tries to dial using Duo even though I've set up the Telstra calling.

Thanks for that bit of info - I was a little confused.

Does suck though - should be no skin off Telstra's nose whether you call with Google or JBL and I bought the JBL because it has a far better speaker.

      • +1

Ditto. I would guess it's Google's fault rather than Telstra

  • I missed the 10k new member offer. What was that?

  • How do you get the 2.5K points. Just set up and nothing on my account - does it take some time?

    • Yes, a few days

  • Looks like it only applies to Telstra mobile user, not home phone or cable internet or NBN users. So I can't use it.

MVNO don't count is that right? including Boost will not work?

Thanks OP. Very happy to finally find a use for my Google Home Mini.

It doesn't want to pick up contacts from my iphone though so had to sync with google contacts.

    all good now!

  • If I have my own brand new google home mini not set up yet and I am on Telstra adsl plan. Do I qualify if I use that new GHM and set it up.

    • mobile with them?

      • I have mobile and nbn with Telstra

  • +1

Not sure why it apply the points for people who already set it up (I also set it up on day one).

It only states "Set up Voice-activated calling by 13 January 2020", which people who set it up day 1 should also be included for, can't find any further T&C's for the bonus points…

      • Where did you find those? No reference to that page anywhere.

Anyone got their points yet? I activated this last week and points haven't shown up for met yet.

    • I just spoke to a rep in the chat and they said the points will be added one month after direct calling activation.

      • They told me 5-10 business days…

    • No points for me yet..

      • +1

Me neither. It's been almost 10 business days since I activate this feature…

  • anyone got the points yet?

    • +2

Yes mine showed up on 17-11-19

      • Thanks, looks like I'll need to ring them up lol

    • I have not got the points, raised ticket last week haven't received any update from Telstra.

I was browsing my points history and noticed that it's 2500 per number activated. My wife has a companion sim (from an old plan) and has her own voice match profile on our Google speakers, and I got 2500 for mine and another 2500 for hers.

  • +1

I set mine up before the promotion started. My direct calling got deactivated (I think because I moved to an eSIM), so I set it up again … and got 2500 points for setting it up!

  • Got the points yesterday.

  • Excellent just signed up!
