Mitsubishi ASX 2020

Hi, I'm looking to buy the Mitsubishi ASX 2020, exceed. Drive away price is $35740. Can anyone please help me with what price to offer? I've heard 10-15% off is not as achievable anymore? Plus being a brand new model, does this mean there's not much wiggle room? I'll be trading in my old car which will only get the minimum trade in. Thanks.

i heard from somewhere (might of been a reddit AMA, can't remember) that if your buying a new car and trading in an old car don't mention you have a trade in until you negotiate on a price. apparently this can affect the amount the salesman will go down to.

who knows if this works or not, would be interesting to know if its a 'viable' strategy. also don't hold me to this, i could just be quoting someone who was talking out of their arse.

    • Thanks, I have heard this tactic too. I'm probably too honest though!

      • +1

Separate the deals by selling the car yourself. If you're trading in, a dealer can offer a seemingly great deal by screwing you on the other.

      • Definitely try it.
They'll ask early on or mid-way if you have a trade-in, say no.
When the time comes close to closing deal then say you've thought about it and want to sell your car too.

if your buying a new car and trading in an old car don't mention you have a trade in until you negotiate on a price. apparently this can affect the amount the salesman will go down to

One of the salesman's first questions is going to be whether you have a tradein. Are you going to lie? He's just going to offer you nothing for the tradein.

Oh, and why do I say "he"? I've only ever bought two cars new, and one second hand car from a dealer (as opposed to a car yard), but I've never seen a female sales person. I guess there'd have to be some. Maybe they sell cars that I'm not interested in (or more likely that I can't afford, lol). Spackbace?

      • There are a few females out there, but it's still a male-driven, non-PC world. In WA, we work 60hrs/week over 6 days. It's a tough gig, and I'm sure females find themselves gravitating towards other careers before this one.

    • wouldnt they ask you if you had a car to trade in during the initial conversation about pricing?

      • You can tell them you might consider trading if the deal is right. If you can afford to sell privately why not have the option to trade if it works out better.

  • My advice is to find the emails for all the dealers you can, advise you have cash and cc them all in together

    • And ask them what exactly?

      • That you offer 29500 for x vehicle in x colours. Tell them you have cash or approved finance and go for it. With this option your probably going to need to sell you current car separately as none will quote over email without seeing your car

        • Maybe I should try and sell my car. It's a 2007 Toyota Yaris with 140,000kms. 5 door hatch back.

        • And you'll get a dozen emails back saying "Can't possibly do that offer, but we can come close and will make it worth your while. Come into the dealership and ask for *****"

Been there done that. You'll never get the best deal via email because they cannot sell you a car and take your money via email.

    • That's a boss move. Careful because can only do this once as they'll know you.

I could suggest to split emails to groups of 2-3 dealerships maybe

  • -5

Yeh I recommend that you will get a better price. If you have trouble call for the email or check their website for fleet manager etc

    • +6

      fleet manager

Yes no worries we can arrange that, how many vehicles in your company?
      Umm I don't have a company
OK why do you qualify as fleet?
Coz I was told to ask for you.
(Passes the lead to a retail salesperson)

      • -2

This is why you get charged a fortune. If you haven't tried it then don't knock it. When I was in the market for a Toyota I went online to their fleet manager form , selected each dealership and copied and pasted my email. It worked for every dealership I selected. And I was quoted 5k+ under for a rav4 when they first came out AND were on back order.

        • +3

This is why you get charged a fortune.

          Lol ah huh…

          • +5

@spackbace: Might add this to my new favourite comment in that favourite comment thread. Telling Spack "This is why you get charged a fortune." Comedy gold!

        • @Fysh lemme guess, you never bought that new rav4 quoted at 5k under did you? Fess up.

          • @Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Correct, i paid paid a deposit, then they blew out the delivery a month, then another month then I bailed full refund, they then had the stop sale. So yeh the delivery salesman will string you on. I have contracts to prove I got the deal so I know where youre going but it worked. I am actually happy I didn't now. I'm thinking if getting one of the last v8 Commodore built. They say in the next 10 years they will start to appreciate.

            • +2

@Fysh: "I nearly bought a car cheap…but I didn't because of reasons and now intend to tell everyone else, including a Toyota dealership employee, how to buy a car"

  • +4

When you get to the dealership ask the salesman to log in to ozbargain so we can have a chat with him.

  • Also in the market for a small SUV at the moment for work only.

    Hadn't considered the ASX.

Was going to go have a look at the hyundais tomorrow, Venue, Kona, Tucson.

Are Hyundai Venue and Kia Seltos the same car though? (Also maybe the Suzuki Vitara?) Damn they look identical

    • +1

NO. Venue is based on the Accent platform, Seltos uses the Kona/i30 platform

  • +1

Look at the new Kia Seltos, it's 2 generations ahead of the ASX, I mean just look at how nice the interior is compared to ASX

    • I did look thanks, but I don’t like the look of it.

  • +3

don't bother with the asx - its a tired and old car - has a number of build quality issues including it's doors

  • There might not be much of a wiggle room for ASX as it's much in demand. However Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Exceed 2WD, you can get for $33k driveway. Friend of mine recently got it from North shore Mitsubishi Ryde for that price.

  • +4

I have test driven the ASX before - they drive terrible and are not comfy at all. Don't even try sitting in the back, you'll have to lie down to fit!

  • Go through a car broker. Let them do the running around for you

    • Which are best brokers?

      • NLC were fantastic

  • +4

    Geez. CX5 is better.

  • +2

    Hi

I just bought an ASX MY20 base model and got $1750 off the price
We had a price in mind with ready to sign on spot
The second dealer agreed to our price

    Discount of 8%

    All the best

    • Thank you very much! Have you had your car delivered yet?

      • Yes … :))

  • Hi OP, can I suggest you to test drive Honda HRV.

  • It’s a very very small interior in the back seat. Like almost hitting my head. ASX has plenty of room.

    • When are you going to be sitting in the back seat?

      • I have a child

        • +3

          Is it a giant?

Why not just get a sedan?

        • boy or g?

  • +3

I would reconsider the 2020 Kia seltos. With your budget, you could get a sport+ with 7 year warranty!

    • +1

Thanks, I am. I'm going to their "launch party" on Thursday. It's defiantly a much better car.

  • +10

I wouldn’t buy an asx. They’re gutless and cheaply constructed.

  • IMO its a very odd looking car now… looks very stumpy and the black indicator/park light? bit at the front it fugly, might look better in person i dunno.

  • Thanks everyone for your comments, it's really helped me to make an informed decision. I may test drive some more cars :) Thanks again! Logging out for good now.

    • Looking forward to hearing how the test drives go.

  • +7

Had a recent model asx as a loan car, wow, no where near a $30k car, i would have assumed $14k. its just cheap rubbish. the stereo was also just plain rubbish. the colourful touch screen was pretty good tho.

  • I’d wait a couple months and buy it in December. If they have any floor stock they’d be happy to discount then

  • Yeah try a ex/Demo model closer to Dec

  • +2

    get a toyota chr

    • +1

+1 to this, in a hybrid variant (due next month).

  • -1

If you’re trading in a car, the only figure that matters is changeover. Know what you want for your old car, deduct it from the amount you want to pay for the new one, and you have your changeover figure. After that, none of the other numbers matter.

If you’re financing, have that sorted before you start talking to dealers too. If you have money ready to go, they’re much more likely to take your offers seriously. If you can do a deal when the right one comes along, I’m sure they’ll be much happier to work with you.

We were in the market for a smallish SUV 2 years ages and we had a look at the following:

    Toytoa Rav4, C-HR
    Honda HRV, CRV
    Mazda CX-5
    Hyundai Kona, Tucson
    Kia Sportage
    Mitsubishi ASX

We ended up getting the ASX, it was the most affordable at the time, can fit 2 large dogs in the cargo area, got us from A to B, does the job.

I don't understand why people are so negative against the ASX if you had a set budget for a new car.

    • Because it’s a terrible thing to drive and sit inside. Comparatively, of course. Anyone remotely interested in experiencing at least a modicum of driver enjoyment should steer clear.

      • +2

If someone is after driver enjoyment they would not be getting a SUV in the first place.

As for comparison, base models without metallic paint and auto (no options), these are the drive away prices I could get off the website for the current models in my area

        Toyota Rav4 - $40,354
        Mazda CX-5 - $35,990
        Toyota C-HR - $33,558
        Subaru XV - $33,477
        Hyundai Tucson - $30,990
        Kia Sportage - $29,990
        Honda CRV - $29,990

        Honda HRV - $26,990
        Hyundai Kona - $26,990
        Mitsubishi ASX - $26,740

Now if you took into account price range, the HRV, Kona and ASX are comparable, take your pick on which one would be more suited to your lifestyle.

ASX has bigger boot space if you are looking for a pram/pets/luggage.
Kona has DCT transmission compared to the ASX/HRV boring CVT (but it does the job).
        ASX/Kona is a 2L vs HRV 1.8L.
        ASX/Kona has 7 year warranty vs HRV's 5 year.
All 3 all have similar/same boring interior, if you want something better of course you have to put more $$ in, but for comparison, all 3 are cheap SUV's designed to get you from A to B
If you had a budget of around 25k for a brand new small suv you don't have much choices.

        • +1

Not sure what RRPs you grabbed, or why you're quoting RRP, but I can tell you these:

          Toyota Rav4 - $40,354
          Toyota C-HR - $33,558

Are deceiving. RAV4 2.0 petrol starts at $37k ($40k is hybrid pricing), and CHR is regularly (always) on special for $30,990

          • @spackbace: RAV 4 starts at 37k.. but if you do what I mentioned previously

As for comparison, base models without metallic paint and auto (no options), these are the drive away prices I could get off the website for the current models in my area

            Toyota Rav4 - $40,354

            • @rehevoli:

              Toyota Rav4 - $40,354

But… it doesn't start at $40k, in any state

              GX Auto 2WD - $37,228 (3000 Postcode)

$40,354 is GXL spec, you can clearly see that on the site, which is 2nd level

  • Sister had an ASX a couple years back. Bought new, awful to drive, endless issues, response from Mitsubishi Australia was horrendous throughout. Would advise you steer clear but you seem pretty set on it so good luck !

    • +1

Thanks. I'm going to check out the Kia Seltos on Thursday. Apparently it hasn't arrived yet and they are having a "launch party".

      • No worries hope it goes well for you either way!

      • Glad to see you're now more open to others' suggestions! Good luck on the hunt!

        • Thanks you. Love the Seltos! Got a change over price of $30,500, for the sports + with cargo mat, slim line plates and a few other accessories. Turned them down and went in today to do a deal. Suddently it's now $31,000 due to them selling the one I liked in stock, and them having to ship more in. Won't come until November 29th of something. Such crap that they offered me a price then increased in in 2 days! So my trade in they were giving me $3500, now they've dropped it to $3000. Will prob try another dealer. They are not budging on the RRP of the Seltos.

          • @Chat00: It's a brand new model, that they obviously aren't having trouble selling, you aren't going to get much off the price. What car are you trading? Could possibly get more as a private sale.

            • +3

@brendanm: Thanks I rang around and found one in stock at another store and bought for $31000 change over. Picking up next week! Finally!!! :) Very happy.

              • -3

@Chat00: OP it’s a mistake. It’s a terrible car. And the new model isn’t actually a new model. It’s just a couple of new panels on the 15 year old model. Lipstick on a pig. Not worth anything like $31k, there are much better cars for the money.

                • +1

@[Deactivated]: Op bought the seltos, not an asx.

                  • +1

@brendanm: Ah ok. Better car. At least Kia actually spends money investing in new designs.

              • @Chat00: Nice one, enjoy the car!

    • What issues exactly?

      • Sister probably fell asleep from boredom and hit a tree.

You can try https://autoexpert.com.au/ John is pretty knowledgable and from what I've heard they get pretty good results. If you want to go it alone there is a fair bit of tip/trick content for negotiating with dealers on his youtube channel you can check out (first being this is the wrong time of the month to be haggling).

    Best of luck.

    • Been mentioned many times, old John does nothing but palm you off to brokers. These brokers of course charge the dealership a fee, which affects your best possible negotiation price

Learn to negotiate. It's a handy thing to do for various forms of purchasing in your life.

    • Big old neg for suggesting that scammer
