Is this impacted by Google ban?

    • +1

      Pre ban model.

    • +4

      No.

    • I don't think so, I'm still getting updates. I think the new version of the os based on android 10 is currently in user testing at the moment. To be released in the coming months.

I love my mate 20 pro.

      However….
Two things that seems to be common with huawei are random reboots and battery management that may be a little too aggressive.

      • +9

I have had mine for a year. Not even one random reboot

Also battery management can be turned off for each app

        • +3

I have p20 pro and never got an unintended reboot. Battery management is proactive indeed works for me

      • Also no reboots here

      • Has the camera had any improvements over the period? Asking because software can make a lot of difference. I imagine Mate 20 had a fair bit of complaints around crushing the black colours.

      • I have had one for over 5 months, never seen a random reboot. Did you turn on the scheduled reboot?

    • No

    • +8

I don't appear to have slow in screen finger print reader. Takes less than a second to unlock using thumb on my one.

      • +1

1s seems forever. It's just one of those things you notice. Although I'm used to the instant LG v30 (it's on the back though, not in screen)

        • +2

Good thing he said less than 1s, huh.

      • +2

If anyone is used to the rapid speed of the traditional finger print scanner and do not prefer face ID then difference in speed is highly noticeable. Its a fair warning to those whose value the instant unlock of a trading scanner on the back of a phone such as the mate 10 pro or mate 20. I have all three phones and speaking from experience using all three.

    • +1

I actually agree with this having come from a mate 10 which had a lightning fast fingerprint reader (of the hardware type)

    • +4

I personally don't think this comment should have been negged. I have a Mate 20 Pro and absolutely love it, but it is true that the scanner is slower than on my old Nokia 8. It's also not suited for very dark rooms, as the light underneath it is quite bright.
BUT there's also the option of facial recognition, which generally works extremely well and quickly. It will work 95% of the time for me, seemingly instantly. So I can put up with a slightly slow fingerprint reader for the rest of the time (or you can just ask it to try again for the facial recognition, or enter your pin).

Things that I'm not a massive fan of (again as a whole, I'm definitely a fan of the phone):
      1) It's too long. It would be better if it was 10mm shorter, given that there's black bars for most videos, games, etc anyway. I'm 198cm (6'6") tall and I have massive hands and I struggle to reach the top left hand corner if I use one hand.
      2) No headphone jack (I'm actually getting used to that one quite quickly)
      3) Curved screen. I would have much preferred a flat screen.
      4) Limited space for notification icons and no option of a second row. You also can't remove the NFC or bluetooth logos, which take up 20% of the limited space. However there are workarounds for both of these. You can get a wallpaper that shows the additional notifications and there are adb commands that get rid of the icons you don't want to see.

All in all, I'd definitely give the phone a 9/10 if not more!

      1. It's not slow
      2. Use FACEID?? So much faster
  • I wonder if Amazon will price match JB

  • +1

Good phone! Being using it for 4 weeks, very happy and the only thing is the in screen finger print scanner not as good as the mate 20 model.

  • +1

Great phone thus far for 2months. My 2 cents:
Dual sim is awesome and easy to use.
Rear camera is sick - the front selfie camera beautifies everything so that is the shit cam.
However, the 3D front security lock is so good you don't need to use the on display fingerprint scanner.
Might just be mine but I can't get the one handed gesture to work, just does not work on mine.
Nice display, it also allows you to turn off the notch if that bugs you.
Stereo speakers are nice, but the sound comes from the charging port. The battery is so good that you don't need to charge it though. Comes with a case, ear phones, adaptor for earphones, massive charger.

  • Which colour is the best?

    • My favourite colour is bright green

What would the 'communist party' do with your data mate?

      • -1

I use my internet banking on my phone and have lots of personal data on my email. Seems like a lot of private information that the chinese communist party could access

        • internet banking apps are all encrypted, its not like the phone is siphoning your information and sending it off as high priority to the Chinese lol, even if they could, what makes you think out of the multi millions of people using huawei they would specifically want your data?

          • @ColstonAUS: I'm thinking that my data might be safer going to Apple (if I got an iPhone) or Google (if I got a different andriod) rather than the Chinese government. What sort of data would be sent from a Huawei phone to the Chinese government?

        • Not sure if if trolling or brainwashed.

    • that's very ignorant, mate

    • +3

Only if you are someone very, very important/famous/rich, doing nefarious thing that chinese can get hold of and blackmail you into becoming a spy in which case you'd probably be blackmailed by 5 eyes to also become a spy/ sell information of crucial importance, so you become a double spy and nobody has a clue.

Amazing, more and more people are coming out of the woodwork with this nonsense. Mate, your privacy is long gone. I am more concerned about data that our governments are collecting. Not because I have something to hide, but your data is valuable and can be sold.

In other news; soon to be rolled out across Australia face recognition cameras.
Well… not yet, but we are getting there.

      • facial recognition is already implemented in a lot of places in melbourne and sydney so it is a reality

  • +7

I've had this phone since its release last year. Hardware wise its a great phone but is held back by the awful OS.
Battery management is overly aggressive, Notifications don't come through half the time and the selfie cam is unusable due to the filter it puts on.

    • Agree. U will need to twig it. Mine is all g now

      • How do you twig it?

        • It's like rooting it but less fun :)

        • Lmao why am I negged!? U need to change the settings to manual.

          • @sauce2k: I fixed the neg. So just change the battery management to manual?
What about the notification and selfie cam issues?

  • -5

will they swap it for a s10e? lol

  • Thanks mate. Bit the bullet. Moving from iPhone 8 plus to this. Let's see how it goes. All I wanted was a phone with a great camera and I couldn't justify paying $2k for it.

    • +2

Just us know how the transition goes.

  • Good price, thanks for sharing OP.

  • +1

When will they have another p30 pro deal?

    • Got p30pro from last deal 929-60 cash back and 10% gift card

      • +1

Hopefully there is a deal but can beats yours…

  • +1

    Excellent Price, thanks OP.

  • Only problem with Huawei phones is the fast charger is very picky. Apart from the original charger + cable it's such a hit and miss finding a cable that will handle 5amps and give you supercharge status on the phone.

  • +3

BEtter question is, has JB burnt through all the green screen horrible QA Huaweu stock as of yet?

    • Not sure why you were negged, that’s a valid question. I would assume though, that those screen issues at launch have long been since resolved.

Sorry, I just saw that my comment replying to the "slow fingerprint reader" was hidden due to the fact it was negged. Because of this, I hope that it's okay to repost it here, given that there's a bit of general information in my post.

I personally don't think this comment should have been negged. I have a Mate 20 Pro and absolutely love it, but it is true that the scanner is slower than on my old Nokia 8. It's also not suited for very dark rooms, as the light underneath it is quite bright.

"All in all, I'd definitely give the phone a 9/10 if not more"

Lol come on man u bash the phone then goes 9/10.

      1. Next time try the phone before purchasing it

      2. OK, welcome to 2019

      3. So tel us why are you bothered by the curve design?

      4. Yes u can..

      Yes I negged u again

      • +6

So to give something a 9/10 or more, you've got to love every aspect of it? (In that case, should I even be married? ;))
I would have still bought the phone if I had been aware of all the issues I listed (most of which I knew about).

        Tell me about #4 please.

Also, nice attitude! I upvoted you for that.

        • +3

It is amazing how sensitive people get, quite sad actually. Thanks for the comment spludgey, all valid points and considerations.

    • +2

To counter most of your points, the non-pro Mate 20 solves 2, 3 and 4 and is marginally better on item 1. The non-pro is physically longer and wider, but has a bigger screen and a less letterboxed aspect ratio of the screen. It also doesnt have a slow fingerprint reader cause it uses a normal one not the in-screen.

People need to understand though that these are big phones. They are basically as big as the old Casio FX82 calculator from school. If you dont want a big phone you need to get the P-series. These phones though should still have another two Android updates coming, with Android 10 out this month apparently. Also these have some of the best battery ive ever used, and I came from the Moto X Play and Moto Z Play which were two of the best battery life phones of the last 5 years.

Differences comparing the non-pro and pro is that the pro does have a better camera (but that said the non-pro is still remarkable with 3 Leica lenses) and OLED screen (but same again, the LCD of the non-pro is one of the best ive seen). The non-pro does rank higher on GSMArena's battery endurance test as well, but they both should be pretty good.

      I would give my non-pro a 9.5/10.

  • Can you get Google pay on these?

    • Yes

      • Seems to be alot of issues with Google pay from what I can see on a quick web search :(
        Anybody using without any problems?

        • Doesnt work with PayWave/PayPass
          Works with Myki (Vic)

          • @pork chop: Is this serious? What the phone won’t work with google pay?

        • Works flawlessly with ING visa debit. Don't even take our wallets out any more.

        • I just bought a new one this morning, it works smoothly with both my credit card and debit card. I did updated my emui.

          • @GAO: Glad to know. So it's bank dependent. It's not working using Citibank nor st George for me.

          • @GAO: Thanks for the clarification guys, seems pretty random then.

  • Thanks OP, just bought one from Sydney CBD store. They have plenty left.

  • Does anyone know if this phone comes with a preinstalled screen protector?

    • There were rumours that in certain markets it does, however I don't believe this applies to the Australian market!

    • this doesnt come with screen protector.

      it comes with transparent case

    • +1

No. The Mate 20 Pro has a curve screen so there is no factory screen protector out of the box. The Non-Pro version has one coz it has a flat screen.

  • I know JB listed products have 2 year warranty.
Does anyone know how long is the warranty if buy from amazon?

    • 2 Years according to Huawei themselves if the stock is Australian

  • I know JB listed products have 2 year warranty.
Does anyone know how long is the warranty if buy from amazon?

I think this is pretty much the best phone out at the moment if you need an IR blaster

    • IR Blaster is great, useful but gotta get about in proximity of about 1m haha

  • Good price. Well done!
