Why would anyone use Skype these days. Serious question.

      What can be used instead?

I have a grandfathered plan with Skype that comes with unlimited world.
After this discount I usually pay ~$65 year for unlimited phone calls to multiple countries. I can also set up call forwarding if someone wants to call me via Skype.

I think that's why I still need Skype. The current rate or plan is rediculous I believe.

      • I used to do this, was an awesome plan. I let it lapse after about 3 years, so doubt I could get it back now. I found the apps became more bloated and they stopped supporting older phones (the small and compact Nokia Symbian phones were perfect for this back in the day).

      • I had it for a few years too. It was great indeed. My entire family lives in Europe so making calls that lasted for hours was a breeze. I let it expire last month though as I couldn't find any discounted cards. I was quite annoyed at first but then I realised that in the era of Whatsapp, Duo, etc I no longer make that many regular calls. Even my grandparents use Whatsapp ;-) And with the number of calls that I make, it works out cheaper to just use some Skype credit whenever I need it.

I use it to call international landlines or mobile numbers in other countries

other way is if I have the other person/store/restaurant as a contact via e.g. whatapp/facebook/line (which I often do not want to add)

I mainly use to call Australian mobiles/landlines when I'm travelling

So don't stock up if you don't need?

Doesn't sound like the ozbargain mantra at all

  • Thanks OP. Time to stock up.

    do credits expire?
for those that lease skype numbers ($40)/yr, can they utilize credit balance?

  • Never buy Skype GC, can anyone please let me know what is the minimum denomination ? I am going to Japan and will need a bit of credit in the Skype account to make voice call to hotel, just in case. Will they have $5 ?
    Thanks

I think there is $10, so that makes it $5 hehe

You should look using getting Line… They have something called Line Out within their app which places VoIP calls flawlessly… There's a certain amount free per day (just watch an ad) or you can load credit. Will call most international numbers and is something like 1c per minute of you opt to pay. It's particularly helpful in Japan.

      • Can the calls appear as if it's coming from your mobile number? Skype has this and it's quite useful

My $70 Google Play credits expired last week. No information about expiry was shown in desktop site of Google play. I wasn't aware that play credits expire after one year. Please check if expiry is applicable to Skype credits before you stock up.

    • edit: never mind

    • How do I check my google play balance expiry date?

    • Hey io
Mine expired last week too $40.
I am deeply saddened because I was also unable to use it due to some errors.
Did you try contacting google to get it back?

  • I tried it a year ago but then realised Belong is 15 dollars a month for unli international calls, so no point at all with skype

If you are overseas, and suddenly need to call an embassy/bank/KFC delivery guy, having a little skype credit could save your bacon…

Not sure if the link will be up for long?

  • I’ve always thought about buying a little bit of Skype credit, for emergency times of need when I’m overseas. But to this day, I’ve never really needed it…

    Good for paying the ATO?

What else do these get used for?

I usually buy this to pay the Indian Microsoft tech support for fixing up my computer

  • Love this for travelling - when your phone screws up it's a great backup option (normally take a tablet with me)

Can these be used to buy One Drive subscription?
    Thanks

I was in Kyoto when the shinkansen to Kanazawa was cancelled due to the strong gale and I'd to use Skype to call the hotel to cancel my booking. It’s handy to have some credit in Skype when you travel overseas.

    • Thanks OP. Yeah I stock up on my skype credits for exactly this reason
