hnnnnnng but I hate using apps to buy :(

These deals restricted to apps are kinda annoying…like…let me buy your product how I prefer to buy it, please?

    • yeah, prefer shopping from a PC and using a browser keyboard and mouse.

the pi4 seems to be in ready supply now in all memory sizes so pricing should be getting better from most suppliers.

still hard to get the offical case for the pi4, mine are on back order from element 14, they shipped the power supply and pi, at least no extra postage for back order shipping.

Without a retropie image, I have no use for a Pi 4 right now…

Official case is useless garbage. Idling at 60+degree and hits 72 degree when ambient temperature is around 30 on my rpi 4 NAS. Change to an $10 active cooling case, it sits around 42 degree now.

        • Costs a bit but the Flirc case is very nice. Can’t use a POE hat with it but.

          • @Smigit: Wow Flirc looks nice - but eeek its 2/3rds the price of the Pi4

          • @Smigit: It's too expensive and I don't like the idea of passive cooling in Oz summer.

        • Link to $10 active cooling case?

Companies like pushing apps because then they can spam you with notifications and emails. Sure you can turn them off, but they’re hoping manny won’t bother or know how to.

And analytics so they can tie your purchasing behaviour with your browsing behaviour.

      • Good point.

  • I'm waiting for Pi 5.
    Black Friday.

  • Thanks - bought one.

Ive been waiting for a deal on the 2GB model.. double the speed/ram of my RPi3B+ - and I dont think my uses would get much benefit from 4GB ram (most RPi apps are still designed for 1GB ram).

How are people powering these things?

A quick look on eBay indicates the official RPi4 USB-C power adapter is ~$23 (from AU seller).

After-market power adaptors start at ~$5 from China.

The special PoE hat is ~$20 from China (not sure if genuine or copy) - or ~$35 locally.

Currently I power several of my RPi3 devices via a $7 PoE-to-MicroUSB splitter.
They have worked really well and much cheaper than the official PoE hat.

Looks like the USB-C version can be bought for under $15 from China
      https://ebay.com.au/itm/223547918102

It also seems there is a Micro-USB to USB-C adapter that allows an older Micro-USB power supply (or PoE splitter) to be used.

      https://ebay.com.au/itm/122777792328 (generic brand)

For a little over $1 I could maybe use my existing PoE to Micro-USB splitter adapter to power the RPi4.

      • Would you mind share the link to $7 splitter for Pi3?
And pay attention even the splitter for Pi4 USB-C, you will lose Pi4 Gigabytes ethernet capability as the splitter is 10/100M.

I use the official charger - mainly because I want 3A.

You can use most Apple USB-C chargers except you cannot use the official Apple USB-C to USB-C cable (due to it being e-marked) or any cable with e-marking. Basically, get a cheap USB-C to USB-C cable. However, the main issue with this is any USB-C charger from Apple costs more than the official one. Also, the 29W Apple charger doesn't support 5V @ 3A, only 2.4A (all other Apple USB-C chargers do support 5V 3A). Samsung USB-C cables and chargers are in the same boat - too expensive and I'd rather use them on Apple or Samsung devices.

Blizwolf BW-S12 is around the same price with no cable (and you will need to wait as it is most likely from an overseas seller). USB-C chargers aren't cheap at the moment.

If you don't need 3A, then any USB-A 2.4A charger would power it fine. USB-A to USB-C cannot possibly be e-marked so you don't need to worry about the cable issue.

        • Good writeup.

So if I'm not powering any USB devices (like portable HDD) from the Pi4 it should be happy with a 2.4A PSU ?

Since I don't need gig network (not doing file transfers) I think I will try the $1 micro-USB to USB-C adapter with my existing PoE to Micro-USB splitter to start with.

By far the cheapest cost (since I already have a spare PoE splitter) and wont require a power point (my rack has heaps of spare PoE ports but no spare power points unless I add a power-board or buy a PDU).

          • @systmworks: I think you might even be able to use a portable USB to SSD with 2.4A. I did initially tried just a 2.4A USB-A PSU (with a USB-A to USB-C cable). Using an USB meter, it wasn't even using 2A (though that was with just microSD card and without gigabit ethernet. I did connect a USB dongle for the wireless keyboard and mouse - still under 2A). I cannot recall the exact current value.

Can re-run some tests if you are interested. I reckon you only need 3A if you intend to use 2 USB storage devices.

            • @netsurfer: Ok good to know thanks. Don't worry about rerunning tests, but thanks for the offer.

Core-electronics is where I'm prob going to be buying mine from, overall the cheapest option when taking into account any extras as far as I've found but happy to be shown otherwise 😁

    • +3

No. Core electronics has never been a cheepest option to buy (although I buy from them when I need something urgent). You can save some bucks by shopping of element14 and also no delivery fee if total is over $49.

  • I received mine today. Waiting on the 2 cases I ordered to arrive… (one was only ordered last night from Amazon).

  • Received my Pi this morning, strange that it was sent by amazon though I ordered from MAD Electronics eBay store.

  • $79.95 now???
