  • "Stay in the know with all things food and entertaining by signing up to our monthly newsletter and we’ll send you a FREE Always Fresh Jar Opener. We will also happily mail you out a jar opener if you contact us directly via standard mail or email to tell us about: [etc]" — so, apparently you get one just by signing up too, as well as contacting them via email/mail?

Nowhere on the signup form to input an address etc..hmm.

    • Yes, you need to go to the contact form that I linked and not the signup page. You can signup to the newsletter and contact them simultaneously from the contact page.

    I'll pass, I can't have visitors thinking I'm not a macho man!

  • I did this a few days ago, and they sent me 3 of the things over 3 days. They are kinda cheap and not sure I will use it, but eh its a freebie!!

awesome now I can open all the jars I have

  • How do jar openers work? :/

By increasing lever length and therefore total torque (also called moment / rotational) force. Torque is given by the product of force (perpendicular to the lever of course) and distance to point of pivot. Given that a jar would need x Nm amount of rotational force to open, a lever acts to decrease the amount of force required proportionally to the length of the lever, and only x/r N is needed to open the jar. Thus a force of 5N at a lever length of 1m is equivalent to a force of 1N applied a 5m and so forth.

I encourage you all to visit the following for more info:

I think Njninjar's actually given you a bad (though very funny :) ) steer.

This looks like a different type of jar opener to what Njninjar described.

Most jars are vacuum sealed. That's a major factor in why it's so difficult to open the jar the first time (while keeping air away from the food inside, so helping to delay the food reacting to air and going off).

This jar opener is pushed against the side of the lid. I think it grips the top and the bottom. By carefully applying a small amount of pressure, it bends the lid a little, allowing air to rush in.

Without the vacuum filled by air, it will now be much easier to unscrew the lid.

Hoping this is accurate and helps :P

Update - I think it's the second type that Will Howard has shown

  • Sounds good, might save me from banging the jars 'up-side-down/on the lid sides' on the tiles!

Nothing like a little warm/hot water (even a little heat from a lighter) on the lid to twist it open.

  • I still haven't got mine, has anyone received the opener yet?

    • Not yet

    • Yes, got mine on Friday.
