  • was this really 279.95?

    • Cache showed that it was but macpac club price was $160.

    • +1

      it's always overpriced…like go to kathamndu it's always 40% off…

  • Halo vs Uber. Which one to go for for Melbourne weather?

    • love my halo!

    • I find halo to be bit big in appearance. I 'll prefer Uber. For warmth wise either would be fine.

    • For Melbourne weather I would say Halo, I have both Halo and Uber. The halo seems warmer yet they both have the same loft rating 'shrugs'

    Perfect for summer. Thanks OP!

Hows this compare to Kathmandu - the official winter jacket of Melbourne.

    • +4

IMO Macpac is better than Kathmandu, however North Face trumps them both. Everyone's opinion is going to be different though i suppose.

North Face > Macpac > Kathmandu

There is of course plenty of other brands such as Patagonia and the super expensive ones like Moncler but the 3 above are probably your most common in Aus.

      • or you could get a Canadian goose. ive only see rich chinese students wear moncler

      • Aren't Kathmandu and Macpac's history intertwined closely?

      • +2

I'd probably agree with this, however North Face is generally a lot more expensive than both Kathmandu and Macpac (forgetting the over-inflated RRPs of those two brands) and given the prices you get on sale, they are pretty good value unless you're doing some super intense outdoor activities in bitterly cold weather.

Decathlon is often worth looking at as well, I find their stuff to be of good quality and good value as well.

        • Got a light down jacket (uber equivalent) for $70 a few months ago, amazing value!

      • North Face > Macpac > Kathmandu

        i agree, but also costly

  • What is Responsible Down?

    • Doing an irresponsible thing in a responsible way?!

Birds/poultry get slaughtered for meat products. Better the feathers get sourced here, than plucking them from live birds (which happens)

    • No removal of feathers from live birds, no force feeding of birds. Several other anti-cruelty measures.

Picked up the hooded version for $129 last week, quite impressed with it. They run big, so get your usual size and it should be good for putting over the top of other layers of clothing.

Also the sleeves (at least in the hooded) were quite long, which for me as a tall guy is very welcome!)

    • Good info, cheers.

This is the regular price at dfo berkinhead nsw

    • Macpac has an outlet there hey? I haven't been in a while.

      • +1

Yes bought from them last weekend

  • Noice, too bad I'm allergic to duck down else would've bought one.

    • +1

You can then try Patagonia Synthetic Down jacket. They are super light weight and quite warm, even when wet.

    • +1

      You could try Gortex.

I cut my gas bill in half by just wearing this around the house all winter.

      You are a true ozbargainer.

    • +1

top it with a thermo layers too!

    • That's the way to go, bro

  • +1

I find the material of these jackets to be too shiny. Prefer the matte finish on the Kathmandu jackets.

  • I bought one of these last season, and my girlfriend bought the ladies' equivalent. We've both found that they lose filling much faster than other brands e.g. Kathmandu jackets. Anyone else have this experience as well?

    • +1

      lose filling

How? Poke out and then come out of the jacket?

  • What colour is better? Black or Black Iris?

    • +4

Well do you like black or blue?

      • leaning towards the black iris (blue)

        • im literally in the process of buying a blue one now. but I already have a black kathmandu one so follow your heart

  • Anyone tried these vs the Uniqlo Ultra Light Down?

    • My SO had the Uniqlo one which she got rid of pretty quickly, if I remember correctly the Uniqlo is much thinner than the macpac

    • +1

I found this to be way warmer in actual cold temps , difference may not be that obvious in Sydney but definitely preferred the macpac halo in Europe. I wore it recently in 0 degree temps and it was fine.. that's probably as low as something this cheap would take you to though

      • Agree - depending on what your comfortable range is, this is good to a few degree each side of freezing.

  • Is it available in store as well?

  • -2

Why are these so popular, every 2nd (profanity) is wearing one?

    • +2

Cos everyone wants to be the Michelin Man for some reason.

  • Women's Halo is also on sale for $99.

  • Just got back from 2 weeks in Japan, wore this after I picked it up in the last deal, was great. Cut down wind chill perfectly!

Can wear it unzipped when it’s not quite cold enough but awesome on a cold night. Rolls up pretty small in the carry bag so perfect for travelling to clip on your bag.

It lost about 2 feathers that I noticed poking through. Have given it a wash now I’m home and after 30 minutes in the drier with a few drier balls it’s nice and plump again!

    Super happy with the purchase.

Polar fleece jackets are a better option as ducks are live plucked for their down - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnnkHgyqARQ

  • +1

Waiting for the hooded one to go down because the hood adds quite a lot of warmth!

  • Mark

  • Anyone know roughly how long they stay waterproof? Guess it depends on how regular one gets drenched

    • +1

These are not waterproof, just water resistant coating. Can't answer your question as to how much rain before it begins to seep through, however.

      • light rain is okay doesn't seep through as long as you don't let it soak in the rain for too long. heavy rain, it's useless

  • Does anyone know if this will keep you warm in 0 degree weather? Considering this for a holiday in December and will wear a hoodie and/or jumper underneath. Just for everyday use…not for hiking and the like

    • This was my every day jacket for last ski season, Easily handles 0 degrees.

  • free shipping for $100 and over and this costs 99.99

    dafuq else do i buy?

  • This halo jacket supported me in past winters. The only problem I faced was the ostrich feathers all around me.

  • Thanks OP!!

I just bought the Uniqlo Ultra Down Jacket For $129 two days back.

Saw this deal in the morning so went back to Uniqlo and returned it. Got the money back.

Went straight the Macpac and saw the Halo for the first time and OMG… so soft! A bit bigger than Ultra Down from Uniqlo.

Also… the sizes are a bit on the bigger side. I could easily fit in Medium when I normal get a L. Still got the L due to layering up.

  • Thanks OP, got one. Size is bigger than normal, but very soft and very light.

  • What jacket would one recommend for Chicago in January? The minimum temperature is -6.

  • Would this be a good jacket for the San Fran Bay area?
(Moving there for half a year)

    • +1

way way way too warm a jacket for SF

      • Fair call. It would be Winter, so around the same temperature as Melbourne at that time.
