10 minutes late at work… but I got the price match! (HN Mackay)

          • @MatteCar: really? even though your nearest jb is 300km away?

            • @ippy: Yep, she didn’t checked at all. I told her I was in rush so maybe she tried to be faster but think don’t so. I saw that jB check carefully but places like HN or the Good Guys are more easy-going.

  • Will officeworks price beat this if there's none near you?

Can we use this with PS4?

    • Yes

      • +1

No, you cannot. If you want to use this as a Secondary Storage on the PS4, you can connect to it with one of the external USB ports. Sure that will work.

But I think the question implied using it as the Main Internal Storage.
It is too thick to fit inside the HDD Bay. You can remove the plastic housing and jut away the Tin border, then it will just fit. The largest capacity hard-drives that can fit into a PS4/Laptop is still (since 2014) only 2TB units. The limits to this is the platter size inside the hard-drive, we will have Dual-Compact-Platters with 2TB plates inside. I think sometime soon, maybe in 2020, for 4TB storage with perhaps an SSD-module as large as 128GB for smart-cache (ie a SSHD). That's because the days of hard-drives are coming to an end, as Cheap TLC SSDs (2TB) are becoming competitive in price, storage, and longevity. However, there's still a decent price difference with Midrange MLC-3D (1TB) drives. Whereas High-end nVme SSDs are still only good for dedicated boot slots with smaller capacity (500GB).

I was thinking just connecting via usb as a external hard drive

        • What's your take on the Samsung QVO 4TBs? At $680 they are getting down to affordable. At twice the price of a PS4…they would still be pretty awesome.

          • +1

@casey2: Maybe okay for a Gaming PC, but utter waste on a PS4/Pro.
The internal secondary cpu cores (AMD FX/Jaguar) are pretty slow, about as fast as the old Intel Pentium/Celeron/Atom cores. So there will be an improvement, but not as much as expected, so its a waste. If you use, for instance, a PS4 Pro very often with many many games and it only cost $250 it would be worth it.

I recommend sticking with 2TB HDD drives for now, and when the PS5 launches in 11 months, we can re-evaluate with the new prices. Though from the leaks and rumours, we're expecting the PS5 to come with a 1TB SSD already (Cheap TLC), so even then it's probably not worth it money-wise.

          • @casey2: Almost 6x the price of this deal and you call that affordable? You can build a whole entry level PC for $680.

  • WD has 5TB drives already. Why seagate doesnt have one out yet?

    • Seagate has many 5tb hdds in different colours

      • sorry, yea I've found it on amazon now thanks

    • Because Windows already includes a trash can, so it would be superfluous.

  • None in Wollongong or Warrawong stores for those in the area.

  • Can this only be used for windows? I wanted to NBC in next to my Mac to use it for “time machine” like this one
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/wd-my-passport-3tb-portab…

    • i meant, i want to use is with my mac book to use the time machine but not sure if this HDD can do it?

      • Yes it can definitely be used on a Mac (any USB Hard Drive really) but you will need to format it in Disk Utility to be Mac compatible.

  • Artarmon has one left.

Just letting everyone know that it is still worth ringing JB Hi-Fi and ask if they still have the $89 promo in stock!

I rang up the Airport West branch and asked about the HDD. Tell them the SKU code of '560530' - it makes the staff know what you're talking about (I found out about this while trying to recover the page that's been taken down using Google Cache). Luckily they had one left at the branch.
