HP Pavilion DV6-4023TX 2nd Gen i7 1GB Decent Graphics $794 OfficeWorks

280

Spotted this when a customer came in to price match at JB Hifi. Good deal. JB will match it too.

Graphics card decent enough to play strategy games on higher settings and could handle some FPS games to a degree.

Good deal for a 2nd Gen i7

Might be worth upgrading the hard drive.

Also the unit is made of metal mostly and for some reason I like that.

Only 1 dimm used for 4gb ram so 8gb upgrade is easy.

  • Yea thx for that. Looks like easy upgrade to 8gb ram as well.

why have these dv6's been getting so cheap lately?

    • +2

probably because pavillions have a bad reputation for reliability vis a vis the nvidia 8400 debacle

i think even the HP Compaq CQ series has a better service record and is cheaper

    • because they're using last years model chassis (which I think is alot better compared to the current black/brown chassis).

      • +1

On the Contrary my friend the Aluminium base chassis is one of the worst ever made, reflects all the heat internally trapping it and eventually escapes onto your thigh causing all sorts of discomfort.
It also partially affects internal components and the Battery in due time !

Seen a TON of these Aluminium Chassis DV6s sent RLO/Repair in around 12 months !
Toshiba, ASUS, Sony, IBM/Lenovo have some of the BEST designs !

  • +4

Spec wise this is a good price, however IMO this style of DV6 is aweful compared to the previous pre-recession chassis and keyboard style. The current keyboard and quick-keys up the left hand side are a PINA. I have spoken to many people who scream 'damn you HP' everytime they hit the print or calculator button on the bottom left, thinking it is the ctrl key.

For some reason (price and reliability makes 2 I guess) the LeNovo's are my POTB right now.

    • I 100% agree you xIT

However you just get used to it (but in turn you become shit on any other keyboard you use :/)

    • +5

PINA and POTB? Must people make up their own acronyms when commonly used ones already exist to express those exact sentiments?

Contextually I worked out POTB must be Pick Of The Bunch but whats PINA meant to be - Pain In Nan's Ass?

      • +2

..yeah my Nana is a real pain cause she makes me do silly typos like N instead of T. Damn her genetic influence!

Pick of the bunch = yes. I thought that was pretty commonly used?

We used to refer to Lenovo as LeNono, hence the habitual second capital. :)

Nothing to see here, move along! :)

        • N instead of T? Wow those DV6 keyboards must be even more worse than you describe, DVORAK even :)

Edit: ooh ohh I made a funny without even realising, the N and T are actually next to each other on a DVORAK keyboard haha

    • Also because of the shifted keyboard, my left hand rests on the trackpad which makes it goddamn aweful to type, really hate the feeling.

Not gonna touch a HP until they revise their chasis and keyboard layout. (Although I have heard that they have managed to fix the heat issue)

Have no idea what POTB means though.
Also it's spelt Lenovo no caps on the N.
Also didn't know Lenovo was a Chinese company… that bought out IBM's personal computing section.

  • POTB = Pick only the best

  • and USB 3.0?

    • Description says usb 2 only.

  • unfortunately i have a 3131tx from the last ozbargain :P

does anyone know how to remap these 'media' keys?

    • Haha! which was posted by me I might add! I too have the same model as you. How's yours running?

In regards to the media keys, there is a key re-mapper program somewhere on google (notebookreview forum in the HP Lounge)) that does precisely that (i.e. remaps those annoying keys)

  • +2

How strange that an OW deal is published with the line to pricematch elsewhere!

  • lol @ mentioning FPS games… didnt know OzB was FPS territory… i thought it was more like the MMORPG (HoN, Lol, Dota(to some degree)).

OK-ish (to the GAME) FPS on laptops would be Combat ARMS because of lower graphics.

dunno bout TF2 (another popular game for OzBargainers (esp. since it was FREEEEEEE)

    • -4

They all work well, latest FPS probably need medium graphics to run smoothly, TF2 runs full specs smoothly.

MMORPG? Not everyone here is asian.

      • +3

not every Asian (eg me) plays MMORPG…

      • +2

What's with the Asian thing eh ? Im Asian whom has 6 pack and can kill 10 cows quicker than Chuck Norris fly from the Earth to the Moon …. n yes i play MMORPG

        • +2

    • .

      • whats that bout asian?

  • Not a fan of these particular HP designs. Particularly odd that their business oriented ones don't have a numeric keypad, whereas their Ent ones do.

    • The 17" elitebooks have a number pad. Theres not enough room on the smaller chassis.

      • There is actually. Both HP and other providers have numeric keypads on 15.6" models.

  • Got a HP DV6 earlier this year. It overheats all the time and my screen constantly freezes up. Just from the last 3 hours my screen blacked out 2 times and froze once. Have lost work everyone now and then. Very unreliable laptop… DO NOT BUY. The mouse pad is also terrible. The left and right click is also touch sensitive and as you click your finger might slide and click something else instead.

    • Hp is unreliable.

  • Anyone has experience on this model? I want to know whether this laoptop has built-in Intel HD graphics and capable of switching graphics on demand to reduce energy consumption?

    • yeah it does.

  • +2

    It's a HP, I will give this a miss.

  • I had a HP DV9000 which fried on me a little while back.
This was a very common issue with most users experiencing the same symptoms and HP didn’t seem to care much for its customers.

So it’s very hard to consider HP when you’ve been burnt by there loyal services in the past.

  • +2

It's a good deal, but I won't ever touch an HP laptop again.

Their customer service is very bad.

  • +1

I had a HP DV-something….. wasn't too bad at first. Then all of a sudden after 13 months, the graphics card died and the WHOLE motherboard needed replacing costing me $550 plus $80 petrol to get to HP's stupid recommended repairer AND took to months to repair. Shit customer service all round. It's like they time your Notebook to die right after the warranty expires! Dam you HP! not going there anymore….
that's just my person experience with HP….. please share!

    • I had a hp pavillion zx5000 ( about 5-6 years ago ) n it till running except the connector from AC to laptop loose now n then due to the heat, i did repair a few thing ( LCD backlight, AC connector, clean dust ) with it by my self
Now i bought a hp compaq presrio CQ41, 1 year ago, and recently the optical driver ( dvd ) only read CD !!! I did everything, but seem like it doesnt read dvd ever again, i did contact HP for support thou ….

So yeah HP's customer support is not that great, unless you know how to fix your laptop n deal with the PINB ( butt ) patiently. Don't go for it.

PS: for those 2 laptop that i had, the heating is the biggest issue with them, with the Presario i have to clean the dust every 3 months ( took hours ).

  • People Please confirm its 2nd gen and not 1st because all the 2nd gen's I've seen and sold are Black colour and This unknown colour belongs to 1st gen hp … So double check before buying ..

  • Definately 2nd gen what is there to confirm? It's a 2630qm. I have physically checked it out too went into JB and saw the same model with 2nd gen i7 on display

    • That's good

  • +1

    Stay away from HP.

I am using DV7 and and had a DV3, and seriously regret with these 2 laptop.

The only reason I bought it was becoz they were a relatively gd deal, and the spec do looks gd.
However, even with a gd spec, the heat generated from the laptop (google for hp design flaw, basically the intake of airflow to cool down is stupidly taken from the bottom of laptop) will make the cpu / gpu under clock to provide less heat and hence slow down the performance, ultimately to an unacceptable level.

I even have my DV3 damaged on display by the overheat, and yet HP terrible after sales couldnt help me to fix it at all. (you may also want to google "HP after sales service" too)

If you still want to buy a HP laptop, do a google on "HP DV7 heat" before you action, you should be able to see pages and pages of heat related issues…

I wish I had see a post like this before I bought it rather than I saw a good price on a good spec laptop and regret til now…

    • i agree my DV6 is bad and slow

    • Thank you for your advice, i have a question, had you try to put a portable fan under the laptop ( just wondering if it helps ).
      Cheers

    • i liek to spk gd.

    • I searched for 'hp design flaw' and only found a single threat about the casing related to this model. Heat issues related to hp models are not recent or not specific to the dv6 model in my google results.
