If you factor in the cost of motherboard and the fact that they won't be compatible with the latest generation of Threadrippers, most people would be better off with Ryzen 3000 CPUs.

    • +1

I'm guessing the latest generation of threadripper will be at least x4 more tho.

      • i'm guessing the upcoming 65W 3900 , performs about the same as this 1920x ?

        • +2

The 3900 would flog this. Zen 2s IPC gain offsets the core loss (see stuff like thr 3600 vs 2700x or the 3900x vs 1950x)

  • +3

not recommended unless you need a load of pcie lanes or large amounts of memory. about on par with a ryzen 3600 which can be found for much cheaper

    • +2

about on par with a ryzen 3600

      you mean gaming ?

but ppl buy 12c/24t for work productivity …

      • Theres less cores but much more efficient

        • +1

not even close on productivity tasks .. blender, encoding, etc

  • +1

12 cores for less then the 3700x on a 20% off.

    Madness.

Mind, you're making uo the difference with the mobo and limiting the upgrade path to "just" the 3nd gen TR. The performance of the 3700x is probably comparable as well, the IPC gain was no joke with zen 3. But if you need those HEDT features this is unbeatable.

    • +1

Third gen TR is incompatible with these boards. Its using the TR40 chipset which while has the same amount of pins, some pins have altered functionality

      • Oh rip, meant to put 2nd (hence the 3nd)

  • -2

2 years old, 3x price for cores you don't use 98% of time …. hm..

  • how does it compare to the 2920 in performance and power consumption

  • Is there a good cheap motherboard to go with it?

    • -1

If you're buying this it would be best to go with a used X299 /399 motherboard.

      • -1

Yea, but asking if there is any good priced ones

  • One of the top 5 best performing CPUs currently on the market with free shipping

Can you back up this claim? TR1920X is ranked 79 on PassMark and I am somewhat certain that at least 5 of the 78 CPUs that ranked above it have free shipping.

  • -1

great if you do need the cores for stuff like encoding!

    • +1

This generation of TR is average with HEVC encoding. Only the current models have caught up with Intel.

  • -1

20,000 on passmark for under $400aud? That's absolutely amazing.

    • -1

19873 for under $300 if you want a ryzen 3600

  • Keep looking at for next home server build, multiple VMs would be an awesome CPU.
