$40 more and get the PS4 if it’s purely for gaming, which with no 4K Bluray drive is what it is, given that you miss out on any physical disc offers from ebgames, etc…not even worth it for purely gaming

    For $100 I would consider

    • +15

100 for a current gen console? Lol

    • -3

I can't remember the last time I bought a physical disc, but it was years ago (applies to games and movies for me)
Whether you want to admit it or not, physical discs are close to dead and gone.
      A very good buy IMO.

      • +5

Whether you want to admit it or not, physical discs are close to dead and gone.

We all know this, but this console has been out for 5+ years - plenty of bargain games on discs to be found for those only jumping in now. Marchi has a valid point.

        • +1

Also having a Blu Ray player (especially 4k) makes the Xbox One S a very good buy. No drive kills it for me personally.

      • +2

Just because you don't buy physical discs doesn't mean they're dead and gone. I cannot understand people like you, you crave the idea of digital media taking over and physical media being discontinued. Why? You do realise if there is only a digital marketplace that means only one shop to buy from (for consoles), which means no competition, which means they can charge whatever prices they want, which means prices go up and up. Who the hell would want to pay $99.95 for new release (mainly AAA) titles. Every big game is $99.95 on the PS store. You can get the exact same thing for usually around $68 on disc and you actually get to own it and keep it or if you want, resell it on to someone else. And then there is movies. As for streaming movies etc, the bitrate suffers so much during compression. If it's a movie I really like I will buy a blu ray or uhd disc for it, otherwise I would prefer to torrent it simply because illegal copies are of much higher quality that streaming services.

Pick up a cheap gamepass subscription and you'll get way more games for a way better deal with this then a PS4.

  • +14

As much as I like Xbox, this is the most pointless console. The normal S can do everything thing this can and more. Disc games have to be installed regardless on the normal S, so technically, there's nothing 'digital' about this version. They both use hard drives.

An absolute wasted opportunity. If they made this thing super small, then that would have made it much more appealing.

    • +7

This console was made to cut cost for Microsoft. The internal are the exact same minus the Disc Drive.

      • +3

But how do you profit from cost-cutting when you can't sell the damn things to begin with.

        • +7

🤷‍♀️, there's always unaware parents that purchase any console for their children.

See Xbox One + Minecraft, yep that's what my kids play/wants.

          • +6

@RichardL: That’s exactly what I thought when I read the title. Thank god for educated comments and people on this site, kudos.

          • @RichardL: And there's nothing wrong with that. Not all of the kids need a physical drive. Between me and my son we have exactly one disc.

        • Not everyone needs a disc drive

      • wow they save $3 which is pretty much what a mass produced disc drive cost per unit in china

    • -2

Its point was is purely to reduce costs and offer a slightly lower priced console for those that don't buy physical discs, which is most players nowadays.

    • +1

Well technically it is all digital Manbearpig. On the S if you have a disc game you still need to load the disc in the drive to prove you own it.

      • I realise that. My point is they market it as all digital like it's a selling feature, when in fact the normal S can be 'all digital' if you wish as well. So there's no new 'digital' feature exclusive to this model that make it worth buying.

        • They didn't advertise it as a new feature. Simply as an alternative if you don't buy physical media. Also you got a bump up to a 1TB HDD over the 500GB in the base model 1S.

          • @sallan75: They advertise it as 'disc free gaming'. The normal S can be disc free as well if you want it to be.

I've had an S, I currently have an X, but a mini disc free S that you can put in a backpack would have been great.

            • @manbearpig: It is 'disc free' gaming. You literally cannot insert a blu-ray disc into LOL. It clearly isn't the product for you.

              • @sallan75: Watch this and don't tell me you didn't cringe when she said 'What makes this different you might ask? It doesn't have disc drive! Here's what makes it awesome'.

                https://youtu.be/W99IuaNVvv0

There's nothing awesome about a console that's been stripped of a feature LOL.

  • +4

Monstrosity, burn it with fire! MS why did you do this to us! We would have had One S deals at >200 if this didn't exist!

At 99 dollars I would jump on board but 198, no way hosay!

  • +1

Not a deal. This crap should be banned.

    • -1

I will take it for 99

  • +1

Any deals on Xbox one S ?

    • +1

JB HIFI - EB Games both have their Xbox Black Friday deals up early.

  • +1

Minecraft 1Tb Limited edition it's been $179-199 in the past, this is an awful deal. But they only matching the price from Black Friday US.

  • +1

For anyone who actually wants to buy this get it from JB, their deal includes Anthem as well, not a great game but still worth an extra $10-15. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/xbox-one-s-1tb-all-digita…

  • SAD is right.

The one reason to buy an Xbone if you already have other consoles is for the 4K player. Still don't understand why this is a thing.

    Aw well. Used it is.

  • most ridiculous version and overpriced for what it is without a drive

  • +1

Don't know why they would market this with such poor and slow internet Australia has 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

  • +1

I really don't get the hate here? With Game Pass being a thing and for those willing to chop and change regions where applicable to buy digital games there is a place for this type of console. At a saving of $100 over the disc consoles some people may see value in that i.e we have 4 Xbox consoles, GP on all of them and our kids have not used a physical disc in 4yrs.

Why pay more for a feature that someone knows they won't use?

    • Yeah, I'm curious as well. All the games I buy (windows, switch) are digital anyway.

    • +1

It's getting hate because Amazon has a history on these big sale days to offer the 1Tb Minecraft edition Xbox One S for $179 - $199…. So I'm guessing people were expecting that, and then this discless one even cheaper.

I use physical disks all the time, so this new box definitely isn't for me :)

    • It's more so the fact that it's literally an S with the disc drive removed. Had it been a new smaller design at this lower price, then there wouldn't be any hate. People would focus on the newer, smaller design instead, and that would outweigh the fact that it doesn't have a drive. It's hard to do that when the SAD edition is just a stripped down S and looks it too.

  • +1

this doesn't have a drive!? amazing.
i usually buy cheap games at eb games etc for $5.
so, I would not get this…

  • Pay the $50 and get the disc drive. Even if you don't plan on using it. Cheap games, 4k blurays and better resale!

  • God I bought my 1tb minecraft one from amazon last year for that much, and it plays uhd’s… thought this would be $150
