4k 55" TV Recommendations < $1200

Hi, on the way to the storet buy a replacement tv for the parents. Looking at a 4k 55". Prefer the bigger brands with priority to Panasonic, sony, Samsung and LG. Mum has found:

Phillips 58PUT6183/79 $799
Lg $995
Toshiba $700
Sony $995 KD49X8000G
Panasonic's oleds at Harvey Norman< $1100

I guess the Ru Samsung would be in contention as well. Any others…? looking at Sony KD55X8000G

  • Sony KD55X8000G seems to be same price as the 49" you mentioned for Black Friday. I'd go for that with 5% vouchers/corporate discount.

    • Thanks for that.

      • If you have a Costco membership or know someone who does, the same model is $879.99 there.

  • The LG & Sony use IPS panels so blacks are greyer than VA panels in say a Samsung, but the IPS panels have wider viewing angles so are better if the seats are on angles from the TV. IPS also usually have good motion handling, but sometimes experience pretty bad DSE.

I wouldn’t go near the Philips, or the Toshiba.

An OLED would be your best bet if you can afford it but you won’t likely get anything, other than a Hisense, for less than mid $1500’s I’d suggest.

    • Leaning towards the Sony, hn had Panasonic OLED for $1100

      • Fair enough. How did you go? Did you get something today?

        • ok seems they just put a tv in the oled section, probably buying the kd800 sony tomorrow from hn…

  • Since your parents are unlikely to be videophiles why waste money on brand names?
As an example, I took the missus in to show her the LG C9 I was lookng at buying (widely considered to be one of the best TV's you can get) and she pointed at the FFalcon which was 1/6th the price and said I can't tell the difference.

For most regular people, a Hisense or TCL will be unnoticeable, but 2/3rds the price.

    • yeah they have had a samsung plasma for ten years, I think we still trust the big brands.

    • There's people that want to move away from buying everything from China so there's added value there even if it's paying a little more. My Sony TV is made in Mexico.

    • Did you buy the FFalcon ? If so, hows it coming along? I am looking at this one atm : https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/ffalcon-65uf1-65-4k-ultra…

      • +1

I went with the TCL (who make FFalcon) and it's been great. Sure if you put it side by side with an expensive TV you will see a difference, but I only have one TV in my lounge and it does what it's supposed to do, so I'm happy with it.
