The SP200 was just recently released (October 29th, 2019).
Only 10% off so this comes short of a Black Friday deal, but I thought to share for those who are interested.
Currently ~$420 direct from China (including 10% GST).

The SMSL SP200 @ $382 Delivered is being compared to the MassDrop THX AAA 789 Linear Amplifier @ US$400(AU$600), I think this comes out on top as a bargain (and the SP200 is fully-balanced on the Balanced output according to nerds who broke-down the circuit-board).

Here is a comparison of “SMSL SP200 vs Massdrop THX-789 vs Benchmark HPA4 for those interested.

SMSL SP200 Headphone Amplifier THX AAA Balanced Headphone Amp

The SP200 THX AAA allows the amplifier to reach its maximum output power and sound pressure level (SPL) without the distortion typically associated with increased output levels of conventional amplifiers. The output impedance is as low as 0Ω.

The SP200 has a balanced stereo headphone output,a balanced stereo line input, comes with high precision resistors for temperature stability, and a high-efficiency ultra-low noise power supply.

Inputs: Balanced x 1, Unbalanced x 1
Outputs: Balanced x 1, Unbalanced x 1
Output Power:
6W x 2 (16ohm)
3W x 2 (32ohm)
440mW x 2 (300ohm)
220mW x 2 (600ohm)

  • Shenzhen Audio has it for US$261/~AU$386 and I kinda like their free express shipping. I bought a Topping D70 a few months ago and got it in a week.

That said, I almost bought this SMSL SP200 on 11/11 (SA/AliExpress were selling it for $250ish) to pit it against the Massdrop 789 but decided against it as there were emerging issues with the volume pot on these production SMSL SP200 units. They used a different pot to the one supplied to Amir for review.

    • Thanks for the information.
By volume pot issues I assume you mean minor channel-volume imbalances with small adjustments which is typical for some analog volume controls.

Shenzhen Audio has it for US$261/~AU$386

      I’m sure that’s before 10% GST.

      • Yeah nothing major IIRC just scratchy pots etc. Anyway it's been a month so I assume it's all good else everyone will be posting complains online. This certainly is an awesome little amp but I told myself I won't buy it unless it dips below US$250, just to keep my 789 happy :P

Edit: Was not charged GST for the D70. Just to be clear, buy it from their website not AE store.

        • I’m sure the 789 is a solid product if able to afford the extra.
I am into speakers myself, and much less-so headphones, but I considered getting a 789 if it were on-sale just to have it if my interest in headphones grew & be able to sell it with minimal losses if otherwise (this was back when Drop kept saying “this is the last batch”).

          • @thebadmachine: You're in luck. 789 is in stock and ships immediately. I'm into audio myself and I do both. Headphones are awesome for late night listening.

            • @m9: Missed edit window, was adding “In the past” instead of “but”.
I really have little use for it currently.
I was considering it back when it was just the THX-AAA 789 instead of “MassDrop THX 789” and they were very limited (due to being so popular).
They make so many of them now I worry the re-sale value will take a dip.

              • @thebadmachine: Haha I doubt there's resale value now with this SMSL SP200 around. Anyway since you don't have a need then don't get it now. These amps are only going to get cheaper as THX/Razer pushes more of these chips to the masses.

                • @m9: Just read your edit a few comments back.

Interesting. And if this is during recent times where 10% GST is applied to everything, then that must mean Shenzhen Audio absorbed the costs.

                  • @thebadmachine: My last purchase was in August. Nah SA just couldn't be bothered collecting and passing GST to Australia. Why should they? After all they aren't operating in this country and are out of our jurisdiction so there's nothing we could do. Same goes with (Mass)Drop. No GST collected. On a side note, all those GST collected by Banggood/GearBest/etc, how much do you think goes back to Australia? There's no way for us to check so they might as well pocket the extra 10%.

Edit: Just did a dry run, no GST on SA: https://i.ibb.co/gT0WMhs/s.png

                    • @m9: I rarely shop overseas, but in my limited experience in NSW it applies to absolutely everything.
Even second hand $10-$15 CD’s from overseas on eBay.
I do most of my shopping in AU but it does add up on even cheap items from overseas.
