  • Sounds good, I already got me a u2711 from HT for 636 though :P

    • +7

And remember extra 7% off from MoneyBackCo :)

      • Please explain how does one pursue this? I haven't quite got my head around to the transaction tracking and whoomp magic!

      • Please explain how does one pursue this? I haven't quite got my head around to the transaction tracking and whoomp magic!

  • Pull the trigger on the 27" here, or wait for the 30" to come up for my preferred aspect ratio?

    • +1

      Rather than a single 30", I bought 2 x 27". Awesome combo.

  • Get one U2711 or three P2411H?

    • +2

      3 x P2411H!

      • You can't possibly view all that pr0n all at once???

        • +3

you signed up just to say this?

  • +2

Pity Dell aren't in the current AMEX promotion like they were last month.

U2711 @ $629-$40MBC-$50AMEX=$539 would have been a smokin deal for an amazing monitor. Oh well. It doesn't cost anything to dream of a bargain.

  • Shame the U2410 isn't on special - I had a U2711, and whilst it was awesome, I prefer the font size and aspect ratio of the 24".

  • Dell UltraSharp U2711 27" Monitor — $629

anyone have first hand info with this one in regards to gamming ?

I have read slight ghosting but you get used to it ?

    • I game all the time on mine… don't notice any problems. love it!

  • Great deal. Desperately holding out for the 30" :)

  • Great deal! I believe this monitor (u2711) never sell under $600, so this is around the lowest price you can get for it.

  • +8

I thought a month ago the RRP is $799, looks like they have increased it by $100 to $899.

    $799 disc 30% = $559

    $899 disc 30% = $629

    Dodgy Dell …

    • +3

      RRP was $799 - very shady indeed…

    • -4

They can make the price whatever they want, there's no issue there.

Who cares what the RRP is? Surely all that matters is how much you have to pay, not what the percentage discount is.

And the 27" is a great price.

"Dodgy Dell" indeed, selling a great monitor for this low a price, How dare they.

      • +2

Maybe if Dell jacks up another $100 to $999 and doing 30% off, who cares?

        Right ….

        • -6

Which bit of "Surely all that matters is how much you have to pay, not what the percentage discount is" is eluding you so comprehensively?

And, further to that, who has the gun to your head making you buy? If you don't want to, don't. Let everyone else who can work out that the actual price paid is a great deal.

        • +1

I am not eluded whatsoever, just providing fact that RRP was $100 lower than right now.

Why are you so worked up? Chill down dude …

And yes, this is a good price for U2711.

        • -4

Not worked up, just pointing out that saying "Dodgy Dell" when they are providing a very good price for the monitor is stupid.

        • +9

          @Mic Cullen:

The point is they are claiming 30% off, which is a lie.

Good deal or not, it's certainly dodgy.

        • +2

          @mgowen

          well put

  • +2

Not bad, but not great compared to past deals. Those P2411H for instance have been considerably lower several times (i.e. 9 months ago they were $209 delivered, or $175 if you bought 3 with cashback offer). Still today is what counts if you need it now.

The 27" looks a better deal.

  • Is the 27" worth the price? Since in MSY, the LG 27" costs only $300…

    • The ultra sharp cr@ps all over the LG.
Worth it if u can afford it.

    • The 27" mentioned here is a higher quality IPS panel (whereas most "cheaper" monitors are TN) that has superior colour reproduction among other things :)

    • See it before buying it.. 2711 has a very sparkly anti-reflective coating. My colleague has a very reflective Apple's 27". I can't tolerate reflection, he can't tolerate sparkly surface - each to his own.
Make sure you like it before paying for it.

      • I've encountered a few people who have similar complaints, one person I met got quite worked up about it :S Haven't seen the 27" in person so can't personally comment on that one's coating.

  • +1

Not trolling or anything. Genuinely curious. $629 for a 27" Dell monitor? Can someone explain why a DELL monitor costs $629 when a Samsung S27A950 which a 3D LED 120Hz monitor that costs around $550? I think the resolution is a big difference where the Samsung one is only limited to 1080 due to the 120Hhz.

    Can someone explain to me?

      Panel quality.

And one is a proper monitor, and one is a gimmicky TV. Not comparable.

    • +1

As best I can tell, the S27A950 is a TN panel, where as the Dell is an IPS. Look for IPS on wiki for an explanation. It doesn't explicitly say on the Samsung page what type of panel it is, nor did it turn up with anything official with a few web searches, but one would think if it was IPS they would parade it all over their specs page.

      • Thanks Domingo. I read the IPS description and I have seen this in person (in a different product). When purchasing an Android tablet, I saw the clear difference between the Acer Iconia and the Asus Transformer. The Transformer had the IPS screen. But I'm wondering if that's a really big selling point (just for me) in comparison to the Samsung one. The Samsung's benefits are 3D (considered a gimmick by most but I consider it a decent addition), the refresh rate and it's also a Smart TV capable of DLNA through AllShare (a bonus considering I have a Galaxy S2 with AllShare).

I still think the Samsung S27A950 is a better product for me but I'll have to accept worse viewing angles than the Dell 2711. Thanks again for the explanation.

        • Does refresh rate even matter on a monitor?
I thought it was all about the response time, resolution and panel type?

        • +2

As you've noted, the higher resolution (2560 x 1440) is the selling point for people to dish out an extra $80. Other gimmicks you've mentioned are best saved on a proper TV.

        • +3

As someone who work on websites every day (multiple browsers, multiple text editors, SSH terminals, graphics editors — all at the same time), I'll take the higher res IPS panel every single day! Depends on what you use it for I guess.

      • "As someone who work on websites every day (multiple browsers, multiple text editors, SSH terminals, graphics editors — all at the same time), I'll take the higher res IPS panel every single day! Depends on what you use it for I guess."

Ah…, that's too bad. I hope my company could buy this monitor, cause everyday I am gonna sit in the office for 9 - 10 hours.

    • +3

The resolution is a MASSIVE difference. The dell monitor has roughly twice the number of pixels in the same area, it has double the pixel density. 1920x1080 is way too low for a 27" monitor, it will look blocky and pixelated, defeating the very point of getting a big monitor.
Also it's an IPS panel which makes a huge difference in colours, even for non specialized users, just loko a a photo on the dell monitor and a crappy laptop TN panel to see the difference.

      • All great points guys, thank you. The reasons I'm considering the S27A950 are more for movies and gaming. I read a lot of reviews about the S27A950 and everyone says the same thing as you guys did. That it's great for gaming but for professional work, it just doesn't hold up. No one recommends the Samsung one for professional work like designing and so on purely from a detail standpoint.

But I'm looking at it from an entertainment standpoint. The Dell offers just a monitor with an IPS Panel and great resolution. The Samsung offers (and this might seem gimmicky to you but they're features to me) a Smart TV which does provide more value to me. It has DLNA which eliminates the need for a media receiver like PS3 or a WDTV to stream my movies and stuff to it. Granted, format support will not be great but I'll at least be able to stream stuff from my Galaxy S2 to my monitor to share my content without wires. It provides a 3DTV as well (gimmick again but feature to me).

Thanks for all the helpful answers. Scotty summed it best. I'll definitely consider the Dell (or an equivalent) for a future purpose where I need the higher resolution and the benefits that an IPS provides. I've learnt about panels today so thanks for enlightening me :) Positive votes to all.

        • Glad we could help :)

  • Would go for a P2411H but the lack of a HDMI output really bugs me if I were to use this for PC/PS3 :( It doesn't even have 2 DVI outputs either

    • Yeah but is that extra DVI interface really worth it? If anything get yourself a switcher (it's not like the VGA switchers where they're abit of a hit & miss). HDMI (dontcha mean input?) on these displays are pointless unless you have speakers attached. If anything, the PS3s should have an audio jack output. I hook mine to the stereos when connected to my 24" Dell.

So no, that's not an excuse to get this 27" :(

      • Yeah I meant HDMI input, I could get a switcher but that's just more $$$ for what should be a default feature by now

  • I wonder if the ST2220T is worth it… would be nice to play around with touchscreen lol

  • oh damn so temped to get another U2711 to have a matching pair… Must…resist…urge….

    • Same….
Wonder if I should just buy one now and budget it into my gaming rig that I'll be getting next year lol (probs should just wait for end of year sales then lol)

    • get it!

  • Thanks for the heads up. Just bought a U2711 to go with my gaming rig that I'll be buying for BF3.

  • Is the Dell P2211H 21.5" LED Monitor — $203
    worth the money??

Whats the difference between that and lets say an Asus/LG/Samsung for $40 Dollars cheaper??

    PS NOT TROLLING.

EDIT : I think I got it. Its the IPS panel isnt it?

    Anyway ordered one.

Would still like a reply tho

    • +1

The one you ordered is a TN panel, not all current Dell's are IPS (it varies so you really do need to check the specs). The cheaper range that does have an IPS panel is simply a cheaper version of the ones used in the much more expensive versions

I don't think TN is that bad tbh, although backlight bleeding, relatively poor blacks & poor viewing angles would be prominent

  • Its not just being IPS makes the ultrasharp monitors special its also the 110% colour gamut compared to the general 70-80% gamut "cheaper" lower range monitors have.

on a side note, to use anything above 1920x1200 you will need either a dual link DVI output or a DisplayPort from your notebook or pc videocard (HDMI 1.3+ also supports above 1920x1200, however not many laptops/videocards actually use (or even state) the 1.3 specifications video output so you will need to make check before you buy)

  • I still want to buy a 30" Dell so I am gonnna to be wait for dell give special price for 30".

  • +1

    For:
    - $539 (factoring in additional discounts) is a very low price for this monitor.
    - There is no comparison between a 27" 1920x1080 v 2560x1440.
    - There's also no comparison between IPS & TN panels.

    Against:
    - The sparkly aggressive screen coating and dot pitch have been issues for many U2711 owners (but then again, some swear by them).
    - The "coming soon" yet to be released VA panel from Dell - P2712H - possibly one of the reasons they are discounting the U2711 heavily.
    - most newer panels (including the P2712H) are LED backlit which means zero time to warm up, less electricity consumption and supposedly less taxing on the eyes for those who are electrosensitive.

    • PS. If no further discounts apply then this 3 day deal at $629 is good but not spectacular given that Harris had it for a while at $636 (and normally at $756) - and you'd have to think prices will be falling with the upcoming VA Panel Releases.

  • I finally took the plunge and bought this due to the good price. Have wanted it for over a year but couldn't justify it. The 7% MBC was the tip of the iceberg but now I am freaking out that I wont get the MBC back - I'm a first time user and there was no mention anywhere on the dell site of any referral code or MBC or anything. How do I know it's actually worked?

    • Noticed this condition..

      1. These discounts cannot be combined with any existing cash off, other sale, promotion or coupon.

So does the MBC still work with this?

      • I have tried MBC when Dell had this kind of 30% off discount to buy monitors couple of times before, but never managed to get any money back from MBC

    • got $40.03 back from MBC so it worked :D

  • Just on gaming, I use an older 24" Dell which is 1920x1200 - When I got this monitor I found I had to buy a $1000 graphics card just to allow acceptable fast gaming at the native res (or I got to down clock the res and watch everything in blur vision)

If I go to a higher res screen - will I be forced to shell out the same again for a whizz bang card to keep pace with the monitor or will the 27" 2560x1440 monitor run games in a lower non native res without looking blurry ?

    • I guess it depends on what games they are and what detail settings you're expecting. If you're expecting to play the same games as before on the same detail settings with the same frame rates at a higher resolution, you'll more likely than not be disappointed. It takes a decent amount more rendering power to play smoothly at 2560x1440 than 1920x1200. You might not have to go sink $1000 into graphics but you might find you need to upgrade or turn down some settings. Again it really depends what games they are I guess.

      • +1

Ever since I went to 2560x1440 I stopped gaming, my 4870 512mb just couldnt handle it at decent settings
(me stop gaming might be because of the hsc though….)

        • +1

A lot of computer upgrades are exponential in cost for reasons like this lol. You want a new CPU? Chances are you'll need a new motherboard and maybe new RAM. New monitor for gaming that has a bigger res? Chances are you'll need a new graphics card. If you want a new graphics card you may need a bigger power supply. And so on :P

      • I can vouch for a 6970 and 2560x1440 - handles it nicely :)

  • I have both the 24" DELL Ultrasharp and the 27" U2711 side by side. Both are excellent monitors. At this price it's great value and 3 year warranty. If anything goes wrong just call Dell and they turn up with a new one, even at 2 years 11 months! Only downside on the 27" is the font side is small because of the huge resolution on it, have to sit close. But huge screen with alot of real estate. It's particularly good for high end 3D CG programs and games. Buy with confidence people!

  • Just got an order confirmation: Your Estimated Delivery Date for this order is on or before 23/08/2011 what?? That's like dodgey hong kong ebay seller kind of shipping times. I expected overnight or something… never bought anything from dell before.

    • +3

Yeah that's abit extreme, could be they've sold out of the first batch of monitors and your order goes into the next batch. They normally update the status of their order quickly so you might get good news. You could try calling them early next week to get an update, however, their customer service reps are all over the shop!

  • Got my U2711 yesterday as a redelivery after the failed first attempt.

It is pretty awesome. Surprisingly, my 4890 is doing a reasonably good job with TF2 so far.

    • TF2's a pretty old game mind you :P

  • It's been two weeks, still waiting. :)
tried to cancel it, but found out the selling price at UK is 839 GBP!

  • I ordered my U2711 on the 11th still haven't received it :(
The email said it'd be here on the 24th or earlier.
I ordered 20" ones for work, and they arrived in 2 or 3 days. Anybody else still waiting?

  • yeap, still waiting

  • Checked the order status in the morning. ETA 9/9

  • I think they tried to deliver it today.

I got a card from Star Trak express, the delivery is from 'Shenke' (if i can read the handwriting properly)

    does this sound right?

  • Talking to myself here, but…

Yeah 27" of sweet sweet candy

It's friggin bright and gets hot!

  • the anti glare filter is a bit annoying, its like you have cloudy eyes, but monitor seems fine atm

    • Maybe you have cloudy eyes? Mine is sharper than real life.
