    If you want adventure, go to Queenstown. Chch is a nice gateway city to the spectacular south island. Auckland is a bigger city.

    But for pure nature, fly into Queenstown, drive to Chch and fly back from there.

  I’ll never fly Jetstar. They’re way too strict about cabin baggage for no reason - just looking to make money it seems. And some of the crew seemed downright gleeful about extracting the extra cash, as if they’d be incentivised for doing so.

  I’d rather pay another airline a bit more on the basis of principle. That’s just me though.

  Edit: I haven’t downvoted the deal though - this is just me venting haha.

    Sadly it’s stupid people that let that system down.

    On a recent Jetstar flight the guy in front was trying to sneak his suitcase and bag onboard. Boarding gate stopped him and he was at 23kg. Over three times the limit!

        Well that’s obvious stupidity. But being asked to pay the full $60 or whatever for being a kilo or so over especially when a family of 3 are flying together seemed ridiculous (and mean) to me.

        I know there are rules to be followed, but within reasonable limits, human beings can act like humans instead of robots.

          @novicenow: We got caught in Prague; our underweight bag had already been checked when our overweight bag was weighed. Now we carry a set of travel scales with us and rearrange our luggage to make sure everyone is under. These “cheaper” airlines make money on the extras. Once you take into account the taxes some of the air fares are ridiculously low, so they must be making their money elsewhere. We’ve ditched our roll on luggage for lightweight decent sized backpacks or cargo bags to allow us to pack more stuff.
