    The R8 is vastly better than this TV.

    R8 has a high contrast VA panel, much higher preak brightness for HDR.

      You must be kidding..LG's interface is 100 times better than vidaa 3.0. Have you tried using an LG magic remote vs the Hisense remote..Also using google assistant on an LG for voice activated commands is great whereas Hisense's attempt at voice activated commands is laughable (check the reviews)..Also R8 is an 8bit panel vs sm8600 which is a 10 bit Tv..R8 is a VA panel..so a really bright TV vs an LG IPS panel with better blacks and wider viewing angles..so both TVs have their pros and cons. But for this price this TV is value for your money.

        Off axis viewing is better on IPS panels, but with such crappy contrast it would want to have some sort of benefit over VA.

    That's a subjective matter. This LG TV has 10 bit IPS panel whereas Hisense R8 has 8 bit VA panel. So LG has better colours and great viewing angles. Hisense R8 has higher contrast. So it depends on what you personally prefer. I like the colours of IPS 10 bit panel, I also like contrast of VA panel. If I have to pick one, I'd go for higher quality 10 bit IPS panel. Just my 2 cents.
