I just removed mine and use filtered water into the water jug

Crazy price for such a small filter.

Recently I went to Breville outlet and had a chat with their technician about replacing this filter with their older style water filter holder and just changing the BWF100 filters. While this works, he suggested that the new Claro Swiss Filter is designed to stop scale build up like calcium unless you frequently carry out the descaling process every 6 months or so. Using the Claro swiss would definitely extend it from descaling that frequently. If you are comfortable with the descaling process then the BFW100 is the way to go.

I just use water from an under sink activated carbon water filter…
Same as what's in these tiny filters from what I can see…

        • Surely there can't be much difference between BWF100 and your way of filtering. I was initially paranoid reading about the boiler issues and the cumbersome descaling process but the technician said that it's not that difficult as long as you follow their instructions/ manual. In all these years they have had only 1 machine fail during the descaling process. It's the solenoid that keeps engaging if it isn't done right and that's the cluck-cluck sound that people have been reporting with the machine.

@whypaymo: Yep, cant see how a little in tank filter does any magical job

I've descaled my 920 once..was pretty easy, don't think it's anywhere near as stressful as the older versions of the machines.

        • That tiny filter got ion-exchange resin to prevent scaling.
Activated carbon does other nice thing but not stopping scale.

There are plenty of discussions online about this topic. :)

  • Usually dispatched within 1 to 2 months … Lol

    • Thanks, updated post. Looks like they moved quickly.

  • Is our (victoria) water so bad we need these filters ?

Chlorine or mineral content in boiler is a recipe for future boiler failure.

It's just a basic carbon filter , so any decent water filter should be suitable to be used instead (assuming you only fill the unit with water from that filter)

I use GG concierge credit for these, replace half as often as they claim you should

    • Yes same, 5 yr concierge was $159. 3x$20 credit every year, filter is $19. Worked out a no brainer to add the concierge on.
