5L Valvoline Synpower $38.99 ($18.99 after $20 Cashback) @ Repco

130

Found an unbelievable deal for Valvoline fully synthetic engine oil.

Yes, it might not be comparable quality to the Group IV and Group V oils, but if changing at regular (<5,000km) internals shouldn't matter too much.

5L Valvoline 5-40 ($38.99 less $20 cashback = $18.99)
5L Valvoline 5-40 MST ($38.99 less $20 cashback = $18.99)
5L Valvoline 0-40 ($50.00 less $20 cashback = $30.00)

Just us the 5w40 it's only a climate difference and better for Australian temperatures if your in the warmer states basically it means -5 Celsius to +40.as I understand it.fyi

      Very incorrect.
      They are simply viscosity scales.
By your logic, why would you not always buy 20w-50? Its cheapest, and in your scale would mean -20c to +50c; not the case.

Most of Australia doesn't see cold enough climates to be too concerned about 0w vs 5w for startup viscosity.
And we DO see hot enough summers, that 'going up' one number, on the hot scale, isn't always the worst idea either (but only for the summer months).

Really only two things affect oil choice (outside of advanced formulation and oil nerd stuff), and that's CLEARANCES between engine parts (bearings, Piston to Wall, Cams, etc), and the external temperature (as this affects the in-use thickness of the oil, regardless of whats on the bottle).

I had Bunnings 10% price beat Repco's price on this oil to $35.10 today. I paid $20 of this via the Valvoline eftpos gift card I received last week for purchasing another bottle of this oil recently from Supercheap Auto. So out of pocket $15.10.

I've just submitted another Valvoline gift card claim for the oil I bought from Bunnings today so when I receive this gift card I'll be up $4.90 on this transaction.

10,000km change should be fine being full synth I think. 5000 is for mineral or 7500 for semi.

  • Sorry I didn't do a clear explanation so heres a link for help, https://www.rymax-lubricants.com/blog/what-does-5w-30-actual…

    • Thats a better chart; but unless you've built a few engines, you'll never know what clearances mean what to your vehicle.
Basically, so long as you're within 5 weight for the cold, and within 10 weight for the hot (thicker, not thinner), you'll usually be fine for a daily drive.

For someone who putters to the shops and back, 'thicker is better' assuming there is still flow.

There's so much to teach about oil choice and how it performs in an engine.
Lots of people don't even realise that OIL is the main coolant, not the water; and this is why flow constantly 'washing heat away' from the bearings is so important.

At the end of the day, it's usually lack of oil, or lack of services that kills everyday peoples cars; not choosing the wrong oil.

  • You're literally throwing money away if you drop this oil every 5k KMs. Full synthetic oils are good for a minimum 10k KMs for most applications.

5k intervals are for people running mineral oil.
