    +1 for the efforts

If you have the AMEX offer, you can get $3 back when you spend $5 on this as well (I hope)

  • is Google ever gonna provide 4K HDR Movies?

    • +2

They do as far as I'm aware
If you go to John Wick 3, it says 4K at the top and then in the description "HDR available'.

Obviously it's at streaming quality not Blu Ray but some people are happy with that.

Man I miss the days, when you walked into video ezy, civic or block buster store and browse the entire store for rentals. You would meet the random people even the girl you liked from your school on some days, buy some lollies and get the movies and be excited the whole time on your way back home.

    • +5

Do you really though? Because to me that sounds like a lot of effort when all I need to do it boot up my TV and I have access to any show or movie that I want.

      • +7

Yeah miss the fun of driving to the store, seeing other people, over hearing their conversation about certain movies or of someone, and most of all the excitement of putting that VHS tape into tape player and hitting rewind.

When you have it easy as starting TV and playing, its not as much appreciative as it was before.
I have Netflix, Disney +, Stan, and Apple TV + subscription and often have nothing to watch, I spend most of the time just scrolling through to find something I hope I will like watching and often end up running out of time.

One of my biggest gripe with the new services is their algorithms which basically decides, hey you watched this one dark movie, you know what here is your entire library of dark movies and tv shows that we think you will die for. Man give me some randoms of all genre.

        • Look at IMDB lists by genre

        • Movielens seems to be the best way of getting accurate movie suggestions that I have found. Netflix is absolutely trash at recommending anything.

One of the issues mentioned relates to overchoice.

A bigger variety of movies to choose from does not necessarily lead to increased satisfaction, but in turn can cause quite the opposite.

You have all these movies and series to choose from but feel like you have nothing to watch.

        • But I have watched more movies now than I ever would have if I had to pay full price to rent them. It has replaced commercial TV for me.

          • @richadam: Oh! I am not debating the cost of it or their way of service. I would certainly agree that these new services have made lot more available to us for lower price. I am simply stating that I miss those times :).

        • Yup! that is the problem.

      • Haha, you seem to be super focused on watching the movie whereas he talks about other things that can happen along with that. Just a different view of life I guess.

  • So, the only way I think I can watch these on my TV is via my Apple TV4K - but that's through the YouTube App which means I don't get frame rate matching.

    • Laptop and HDMI cable?

    • Get a chromecast. These are google movies afterall.

If only we were in America. Buy it on Google Movies, also available on Apple Movies (as long as supported by Movies Anywhere, which all but Lionsgate and Paramount do), but the downside is you will could get shot at any moment.

  • Interesting John Wick 3 is MA15+ here, like the DVD / BluRay, while the physical 4K disc is R18+. I'm guessing this version left out the eyeball scene that was left in on the 4K disc? I would have thought / hoped the 4K version would be the same regardless of whether you bought it on disc or physical media.

Also - why are some movies on Google only available in SD (eg Donnie Brasco and Stand By Me, just looking at a couple currently on sale), even though there are HD versions available on BluRay? Surely it's not that hard to put the HD version up on the digital stores, too? Or is there some weirdness going on like different companies have different rights for SD vs HD / DVD vs BluRay vs 4K versions?

I believe Amazon Prime has a streaming service like stan and Netflix.

Its $6.99 a month and you can watch Jack Ryan S1 and S2 through that in HD quality with almost any subtitles you want. + got 1000's of other movies and shows.

    • +2

Yes, they have been adding a lot of content lately, most of which can be just ignored, but also have some award winning series. It's also cheaper if you opt for annual subscription.

    • +2

Amazon Prime is the best streaming service, I reckon. I watch more of that than Netflix now. Too many people are unaware of it.

Jack Ryan is available in 4K HDR on Amazon Prime, if your hardware supports it. All Prime Original contents are 4K HDR, including the Expanses previous Season 1-3.

      • I've just finished binging on The Expanse. Thanks Amazon, for saving this superb sci-fi series. How long do I need to wait for Season 5?
