    Snorkeling mask*

  • Not a Scuba Mask…

$35 is a great price for these. We've used them on cruises and on overseas holidays for the kids/wife. I still prefer the standard snorkel mask…but that's because I'm used to that from actual Scuba and years of diving down under water while snorkeling.

    • I'm also more familiar with standard snorkel and masks.

Do you happen to know if there are any benefits or downsides to the full face mask? It seems like it would offer more peripheral vision than a standard mask, but it also seems like there would be more places for water to leak in (due to the greater perimeter?).

Ok. Here are things that I've picked up from using it myself (I don't even take mine with anymore). It works superbly if you're going to stay on the surface.

        1) Do not look backwards too far, this will cause the air intake to go underwater and get blocked = panicked child that can't breath. So make sure your kids know to look left/right/down/forward…not back the way they came for too long.
        2) Don't talk too much… it's so tempting to talk with your mouth free…but your chin moving has a good chance of braking the seal and letting water in at the bottom - again, panicked child.
        3) If you try dive down a few meters, be prepared to have your face try to surface without the rest of you. :) The pressure and flotation-factor of the air in the mask works against you as there's more air in there than would be in a standard snorkel mask.

That said, these are an absolute must for kids. The viewing angle is amazing an my kids loved being able to look around easily and watch turtles, sharks, etc. while just breathing normally. (and yes, I expose my kids to white/black tip reef sharks 1-2m long)

And for people that don't like snorkel pipes, this is a game changer.

Thank you for the informative response!

Bear in mind that you cannot dive to get close to the corrals with the mask on.
It's great for those who are content to remain on the surface of the water.

      This!

I'm not a fan of this type of mask as I go full-cool-guy and dive into the water. I found the mask is too buoyant for my liking.

@eddyah Not only that but there is no way to compensate for the change in pressure

  • +5

There are safety issues for these type of masks

It can cause a build-up of carbon dioxide, which causes the wearer to pass out and drown

Don't snorkel/dive alone unless you've done so for years and know your own equipment.
      Don't buy cheap Chinese knockoffs.
Clean the mask in fresh water after use - make sure no sand in the pipe, etc.
As per my post above, know how the mask actually works and you'll be fine.

I've used the Decathlon version since early 2017 and took our kids to the local pool to test and teach them how they work before going on holiday.
I would never use one of these provided by a tour operator.

I recently had the displeasure of borrowing this kind of mask at Rottnest Island. It was terrible. Hard to breathe because you can't breathe hard or the ball float locks down, and hard to see because the lens was concave and made seeing directly in front nearly impossible…

…and it looks stupid. Everyone else had a regular snorkel and mask. I felt like a floundering freak. Haha. Next time I will pack my own gear.

    • I brought one to take to Hawaii earlier in the year. Next time im just going to use regular swimming Googles, just easier and you can dive around etc easier.

  • Wish the ventilation bit comes with N95 rated filter.

  • Why is this listed as starting tomorrow ? Deal is active now

went to DECATHLON once… the stuffs they sell are really low quality.. you can tell from the sewing of clothes for example. and the zipper quality… and the plastics materials…

    • +4

Hmm… used backpacks, reef shoes, masks, towels for a few years… quality seems better than most at decent prices.

      • I second brannor’s comment.

Could not disagree more. Value for money is great at decathlon.

  • Love this mask. Works really well
Able to snorkel for 2-3 hours straight without any issues
Does limit ability to dive down due to buoyancy but can still get to about 6-8 m depth
    No fogging
    No water down tube

  • EarlyBird 2 hours 35 min agonew
Bear in mind that you cannot dive to get close to the CORRALS with the mask on.
It's great for those who are content to remain on the surface of the water.
    Giddyup…
