  • For some reason this was already downloaded on my Xbox when I came home tonight, super weird.

    • It's probably been on your wishlist?

    • +2

It's U2 all over again, but this time with something decent!!

    • +1

Clearly says - free WITH Game Pass.

Just like you get "free" internet WITH your phone plan (no plan no free internet).

      • +3

Free to play, not free to own. That's the difference. You need an active Game Pass subscription to play but even then they can remove the game at any time.

        • +2

That's exactly what the Game Pass is.

          • +7

@BooYa: So are you going to post all the free movies & TV shows on Netflix/Stan/Prime this month? It's what you get with your subscription.

      • +3

So if i get FREE internet with my phone plan then that is an awesome deal!!! Anyone got that one?

        • +2

Yep that's true, only difference is Game Pass is a paid game play subscription. But Ozbargain will be filled with these "free game" Gamepass threads if they did all the games on it. That is so annoying.

          • +3

@hollykryten: IMO, if it's a reasonably good game then maybe it's worth mentioning and Witcher 3 qualifies for a reasonably good game.

      • Free internet? No, it isn't free as you'll often pick a plan specifically for the internet data caps.

  • +2

You're not actually getting the game for free like it says in the title. It's not a game giveaway. You don't own it. But it's good if you want to trial the game as long as it's on Game Pass.

    • -4

Pretty sure as long as you DL it/add it to your queue you can play it even if/when it gets removed from the Game Pass list.

      • +6

Which is not true. If it gets removed from Game Pass then so does your access to the game get removed unless you pay for it. You don't own the game.

        • +2

          Oh.

Well, pretty sure is not 100% sure. Guess I was wrong about that. I assumed it was the same as Games with Gold, I guess - I still have Sleeping Dogs installed from years ago on account of that.

Good to know anyway. Better hurry up and finish MGS V.

  • +1

More importantly Wandersong is included atm too

    • +2

Is that important? The cover art looks colourful but I’ve never actually checked out the game.

      • +1

Well, it's on Game Pass (which is $1 for 3 months) so maybe you should give it a go!? Best thing about game pass: trying out games you never otherwise would and finding gems.

  • Ugh edited it for those who do not understand the phrase "free WITH" something

    • +14

Everyone understands what you mean by “free with”. The point people are making is Game Pass sole point of existence is a paid subscription service to access games. Saying the game is “free with” is really a stretch given the only reason to pay for game pass is to access games such as this. As such you can’t really say it’s free, you are paying explicitly for this service. It’s pretty much misusing the term which would normally be described for getting something for free as an added bonus for or with something else, not due to being part of a services core offering.

This is really just a public service announcement. MS emails Game Pass subscribers of new games so it’s a bit debatable if notices here are necessary.

    • +1

That is not free though, that is 'part of'. Games are being removed and added to Game Pass on a regular basis and that is what you pay for, that is not 'Free with' since that is exactly what you pay for. It isn't free chocolate with every chocolate wrapper you purchase.

Is The Witcher free with Netflix subscription? No, it is part of the service you are being provided when you pay for the Netflix subscription. If they didn't add new shows, people would cancel Netflix.

    • Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
Do you know if it’s pc as well as Xbox ?
      Thanks

  • +14

    OzGameNews.com

  • +2

If I wanna get updates on what's been added to some subscription service, I won't go to a site dedicated to bargains.

PS. Netflix is getting the 2 MCU Spidey movies in January if you wanna make a post.

    • -3

      Yep. Tired of this.

Though I'm sure if you posted that it's somehow different in the powers that be's minds.

  • +3

My neg got revoked, glad there are sane people here

  • +1

    "iTs NoT fReE"

Thanks for the news. Don't know why it triggers people so much.

    • +10

Probably because there are so many better ways to find this out. As someone with game pass, Witcher 3 has been plastered in the phone app, console dashboard and my Xbox games library for at least a month and announcement months ago. There’s a ton of posts that could then potentially be made. Like Phoenix Point, My Friend Pedro, Farming Simulator 17, Halo and Age of Wonder Planetfall is on Game Pass PC. Or Untitled Goose Game, Pillar of Eternity Complete Edition and Overcooked 2 are on Game Pass Console.

Or even make a post that next year all the Final Fantasy games will be on Game Pass. As well as Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2.

      • Literally didn’t know any of this. Will Final Fantasy games be on game pass?

        • Yep. 2020. No confirmed dates.

        • Yep googled and heaps of the newer ones are. Time to play X (has any completed the sphere grid?) and finally play X-2

          • @[Deactivated]: I’ve been debating whether I wanted to get into the final fantasy franchise for years. Looks like I will be next year.

            • +1

@SlappersOnly: I think I clocked 130 hours on X. After you complete the game you get a chance to go back and finish character development and face ridiculously hard monsters. I never took the time to finish the sphere grid. + there is a random sports game that can consume you for hours.

        • Wait for the posting on ozbargain

          • @J6: Hopefully this will tide you over until it gets posted on ozbargains.

    • +7

      Because it's not a deal.

It's like posting Sonic X is free this month on Netflix. It isn't a bargain, its just what you pay for.

        • +3

That's sweat from Barnaby's & Bob's hats. Only available on subscription

          • @[Deactivated]: Haha I didn't know the were available. Please make a deal and I will + it

        • +3

          Haha Ronnie you got owned!

      • It's not just what you pay for if someone (like me) likes this bargain and signs up to the service.

    • It's not a deal. It's that simple.

  • +7

Could be worse I.e. Nintendo Switch $350-400 posts every couple of days for the last 2 years. I think I got my switch for $379 with Arms in 2017 using a gift card so more like $360. If you aren’t posting a Switch deal without game sub $300 stop wasting our time.

  • +7

One of the best games of this gen and even all time imo. Get on it if you’ve never tried it! I need to get back to it,,,

  • +7

Good timing. Witcher just came out on Netflix!

  • +5

This is a subscription that you pay for…where's the deal?? I'm looking but i can't seem to find it…

  • +1

I’ve no time to play or watch The Witcher when I’m too busy reading these juicy debates!

    • +8

It suspect it's because game pass is like Netflix, when the games leave the catalogue, you can't play them any more.

With xbox gold, you have a certain period of time to "buy"/claim them (for $0) you get to keep them whilst your have xbox gold (even when they leave the catalogue). If you don't "buy"/claim them during that time, you don't get to have/keep them.

I agree they're not really bargains, but at least that post has several games, this has one.

      • Yep, I do somewhat agree with your points, they're both basically the same thing. You can only play them whilst paying for a subscription service, and with how easy it is to convert Xbox Live Gold to Xbox Game Pass (from what I've read, I don't own an Xbox as I'm only using the Game Pass on PC right now) they're pretty much one in the same thing to me with how things are with it.

Also I'd rather take this game over the ones offered with 'Games with Gold' considering the quality of The Witcher 3.

    • +5

Well there's a lot of things to consider

      1. Gold has 4 games and thus 4 times the likelihood of people liking something there
      2. Gold's deal lists all that's on there, a bunch of stuff got added to Game Pass yet this one game got it's own deal.
      3. With Gold you actually get to keep the 360 games forever, ie, if you bought a month of Gold full price for 10 bucks or 10.95 or whatever, this month, you would get a copy of Lego Star Wars II (one of my all time favorite games), and Tekken 6, to keep forever. That there, that's a decent enough deal on it's own tbh.
      4. It's also the first halfway decent month of Gold we've got in a hot minute.
      5. Gold is more of a necessity to people than Game Pass and thus, more people have it than this.
      6. Game Pass costs more than Gold and thus, will always have some people gunning for it.
      7. The Witcher 3 was on clearance for 10 bucks at a fair few stores ages ago, posted on this site no less, the offered value may not seem all that great to many on here.
      8. There may have been several neggers on the Gold deal who also got their vote revoked as some have on this deal.
      9. Gold's games, even the Xbox One games, will be in your download list forever (XO games obviously required continued subbing, I know), whereas this could be taken down from Game Pass at any moment, meaning this is a lot more of a "free" rental than Gold.
      10. And finally, people are just god damn sick of (mod: edited) referring to games on Game Pass (or Gold, or PS+, or Nintendo online) as being free when they are included as part of the subscription you pay for, and for many people are the sole reason they are paying for that subscription in the first place, so they get annoyed and neg it. I can definitely understand it.

There's my top ten, I'm sure I can come up with more, but it's 6:45am, I just woke up, and it's too damn hot to think.

    • Wait til NBA 2K20 comes on Xbox game pass!

    • +1

Probably because you mainly pay for gold to play online, the free games are just a bonus. Whereas GamePass you are just paying for the game included so saying a new game is added is not really a value-add. Especially in the case of Witcher 3 which has been constantly on deep discounted sales where you can get it for around $10-15.

Games with gold need to be claimed between certain dates, gamepass games just rotate in/out and there's no way to claim any of them, it's basically a Netflix style service where you can't play it anymore once it's removed.

May as well make a new post every time a TV show is added to Netflix/Stan/Disney Plus/etc

  • +3

Far out, I can't believe there are so many negative people in the world.

    Get a life, it's included in a membership and it's a great game so it's a bargain.

This listing has benefited me because I wouldn't have noticed it so that's all that matters.

Stop being so picky…..get a life and appreciate someone took their time to help notify people.

PS if you reply to me with something negative just realise one thing….I don't care

    • +7

If you’re missing out on notifications of new titles it’d be worth signing up to the newsletter at https://live.xbox.com/en-US/MyXbox/ContactPreferences. They email out when new games are added.

    • +6

It's just wasting peoples time. As someone said it is exactly like doing a Netflix "deal" with all the new movies for the month. It's pretty pointless. If you're after a game and you're curious if it's on game pass or whatever then just google it. It's not hard.

      • -1

You complain about it wasting peoples' time, yet you spent the time to whinge about it.

        • +3

I spent the time to explain to people how stupid it is to post subscription "deals"…but you obviously like them….hmmm… Alright everybody, Wakie here is in charge of putting these netflix "deals" up for our benefit. Thank you wakie.

    • +3

You have to pay for a membership first in order to play it. That is not free.

It's not like a game giveaway where no subscription payment is required. Those are the true bargains where you actually get to keep it no subscription payment required. I guess you can't see the difference.

    • +1

You are crying about people crying. Take your own advice.

    • Exactly how I feel I’ll get the download started now .

  • +1

    winds howlin..

  • +8

not free if you pay for it

    • Who said someone didn't get the pass for free from, say, an AMD upgrade? Sounds free to some, but not you.

      • They would’ve paid for the AMD upgrade so still not free

        • In that case, they paid for the AMD upgrade and got the pass for free.

By your logic, any Internet deal is not a bargain because you need to pay for Internet access.

  • +11

You pay for a subscription service and they add and take games away all the time, exactly like this.

This is a notification, not a bargain.

  • +7

All these mentions/comparisons to Netflix has reminded me, The Witcher season 1 is up to watch now.

    • +8

Can you please post a deal on this asap

      • +2

Get Netflix for a month and you get to watch the entire Witcher series for FREE!!

        • +2

          What a deal

      • +2

I did just that, but it was removed for 'trolling', and I got a warning. Talk about double standards.

        • +2

I did it last week and got removed for trolling. It's odd indeed.

  • +10

I like Gamepass, but I won't stop saying that these should not be posted as deals.

  • +5

Equivalent of announcing what’s current on Netflix. Not free and not a deal if you can only get it by paying for a subscription.

That’s the reason for the neg.

  • +3

Have suggested site rules be changed regarding Games Pass (and the like)
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/431487?page=4#comment
Might be worth adding your 2 cents if you want to argue your case either way

I do not think we should be posting every single game added to XBGP but i wont neg this "announcement" either

  • It seems like the better the game on Game Pass, the more negs. I do think we need a PSA section for these though.

    • Honestly, yes. Need a PSA section that’s not general forums and not bargains. Somewhere to post all those, “this week’s Woolworths catalogue is out” deals or the Xbox/PS4 month free games.

  • Is this the same as the playstation sub free monthly updates? They’re always +

    • It’s a bit different. Xbox Games with Gold and Playstation Plus are similar.

This is more along the lines of posting whenever a new game is added to Origin Access or Uplay+. Ozbargainers just seems to really like Xbox Game Pass. Not that I can blame them, it’s currently a good deal.

  • The salt in these comments is the seasoning to my free game 🧂

  • Saying this isn't a deal because you pay for this subscription is like saying that 16 pack of Coke you just bought isn't a deal because you paid Coles for it.

Pay for something, get something in return? A deal.

Pay for something, get something really, really good in return? A bargain.

    • +2

In all fairness to the original negs and commenters, OP marked the post as a freebie and said the game was free in the title.

    • +1

No, you're getting confused. What you're referring to is paying for the SUBSCRIPTION. That's the only time Gamepass should be posted as a deal (e.g. 3 months for $1). That is where the deal is, which is what your analogy is in-line with.

A better analogy to illustrate the issue would be if you paid $16 a month to get food/drinks, then when you get coke (along with pepsi, sprite and many others), as you should, you post a deal about how amazing it is to have gotten coke. You're fine to post a deal about paying $16/month for food/drinks if you feel that that service is a deal. But posting a deal about getting coke? No, that's just the product of the service you're paying for.

Also this was originally posted as FREE, as have all the other 'free' Gamepass games that have been posted. Would you say that the coke you got was free?

  • Hopefully comes to PC also.

  • This game heavily benefits from being modded, so I would not recommend playing it on consoles.

  • So many people clueless about what free means.

You paid for the game pass. End of story.

The game itself is given to you for free.

It's like you going into a shopping centre, paid for parking and some shop gives you a free bag of sample, what you going to do.. argued that the bag wasn't really free caused you paid for parking?

    • Horrible example. By your example there are numerous things to do with game pass that doesn't involve these 'free bags of samples'?

No. You buy the gamepass to have access to the game library, nothing extra. To fit into your example, it would be you pay for parking spot, so you can park your car there for free as long as you continue to pay for parking.

      • Who the hell pay for parking so they can sit in their spot gloating about how they got a spot for free?

You park to go shopping, the free bag is just extra.

Game pass isn't just for free games, I've purchased a lot of games myself to keep and the discount I get far pretty the prices I've paid for the pass.

        • Who the hell subscribes to a game streaming service that only provides streaming games and doesn't play the provided games??

You're confusing xbox gold which gives you your discounts, and this service, which is just games provided to you for streaming…

The only cross over is gamepass ultimate, which combines the two, but that is not what we are talking about, it's the game pass part of the double.

So yes, you pay for parking, and feel like you're getting something extra for getting to leave your car in the space.

          • @2023: "The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt on Xbox with Game Pass and Ultimate"

What were you talking about the ultimate again? L2 read mate.

If you are just on gold pass, you are just cheap and I'm not surprised you are crying about the cost of a free game.

            • @PuppieWayne: I'll say it again, and slowly so you can follow along.

*You get this game if you are a GAME PASS OR ULTIMATE subscriber.

*If you only have Gold, you don't get this game.

*Xbox gold has nothing to do with this deal, and so it's related to GAME PASS and therefore anything related to xbox live gold service is not applicable (including the store discounts you hold so valuable)

*People are divided on if game additions constitute a bargain when people are paying for the game streaming service.

*I couldn't give a shit about the cost, I don't even have an xbox one.

              *you're analogy was horrible
