  • How much is it usually?

  • I host a video chatroom on a SoYouStart canadian server. Annoyingly there's no auto pay so you either pay more months upfront or you login every month to pay, I think they do that on purpose so people are pushed onto OVH!

But yeah, damn, OVH servers are really reliable. My site doesn't even have a reconnect function and it drops you the moment your internet splutters, but with this server I have users that can stay connected for days no issue at all. I went with SoYouStart canada for the lower price and unlimited 250mbps. kimsufi I hear is similar but even more budget, and unlimited 100mbps.

    • They own their datacentres so hardware issues are usually instantly attended to. But they're super reliable as you say.

  • What's an SSD disk? Some new technology?

    • +1

It's a bit like an ATM machine.

      • Sort of. Except it's solid state drive, not disk.

    • -1

      An almost mandatory computer component.

      • I think he's referring to the redundant noun.

        • Oh … derp

  • What's a good option if you just want to administer your own (very low volume) personal email/web server, and mess around with Python stuff (Django, etc)?

I still have a hosting service in the UK (a few dozen emails a day, a few simple web pages for family use), many years after I moved to Aus. It's terribly slow, expensive and I want to replace it with something better. I quite like the idea of just having a cloud server and setting the whole thing up myself.

    • Probably AWS free tier if you haven't used that or check out lowendbox and find a vps.

    • i found that a contabo vps was good for messing around.

    It's not an upgrade, it's an option/alternative.

  • Can we install java, tomcat, DB2 express, WAS liberty etc?
We would use ftp and telnet? Or can we remote connect to it?

Does it come with static IP address?
What version of Windows Server is it?

    When does this deal end?

    • Hello @congo,
sorry for the delayed answer and happy new year!
      To answer your questions:
Since you have root access and manage your server, you can install pretty much any software you require.
You can access your server via SSH or remote desktop if you choose a windows distibution.
I suggest you to read our guide here to learn more on how to get started: https://docs.ovh.com/au/en/dedicated/getting-started-dedicat…

Regarding IP address, as mentionned in the thread above it does include one static IP and you can add more:
      1 IPv4 included. Add additional IPs (up to 256) for a one-off $3 fee/IPv4). Don't pay monthly!

Regarding Windows, more info here: https://www.ovh.com.au/dedicated-servers/2014-windows-licenc… but you can bring your ownn licence and your own distribution too.

Deal will end in 3 days from now on OZbargain.

      • Thanks, the windows distribution is extra charged monthly?
        At vultr it is included?

      • Rather than paying a monthly fee for the Windows license, I can purchase the Windows Server license from a shop.
How do I create a distribution?
Can I use your Windows distribution, and then apply my license?

        • Hello @congo,
I can refer you to this guide:https://docs.ovh.com/au/en/dedicated/getting-started-dedicated-server/
You can bring your own windows SPLA licence to OVH and also your own image/template if needed (or install one of our windows and add your licence).
I suggest you to contact our tech support team or check our guides online for further details.
          Thank you
