Anyone know any cheap installers in melb (eastern side)

    • Not at this time of year.
I found the costs being similar with 5 professional locals. Went with the best in my research… Turns out he was a typical SMASH IT OUT guy. All the typical trade issues & complaints. Frustrating.

(Coming from someone who works in residential construction.)

      • I know all about sun standard trades…urgh. wasn't expecting a deal at this time of year (solo hot) just don't want to pay $7-800 for a back to back!)

  • +11

This is a great price for 2.5kw brand that's new to the aircon Business. The big difference with this and the dodgy Hyundai aircon sold by Kogan, is they actually have 5yr after sale support in Australia, where as the one sold by Kogan only has 1year and zero info on after sales support (But some ppl will tell you that you can use the ACCC/ACL to help you hahahahaha).

If anyone has access to TGG commercial site, you can also the the 7kw model for $1035!

    • Does this specific one sell at TGG Commercial? Any ideas of the price? I can't login into mine until I get back to work in January! Thanks

      • The commercial price is exactly the same

        • Thanks for checking! 5% discounted gift cards via the employee benefits will help bring the price down even further.

          • @arnomic: Also the 3.5kw is $666

            • @BlitzR: Where is it? Can't see it on eBay or GG website.

              • @skysurfer: The price is on the good guys commercial site.
You need a login account to see the prices.

                • @BlitzR: Thanks. Also need to register before logging in, any idea how to do that? I have an ABN if that's all it takes for access, but nothing to do with air con..

                  • @skysurfer: I actually got it a Gday Rewards thread thats someone posted on here awhile ago. They are partners with that discount site.

            • @BlitzR: Hey BlitzR - was the $666 for the Cooling Only 3.5kW model or heating+cooling?

    • I’ll pay someone like $10 to be able to order through their TGG commercial account.

I wanted this to be good but take a look at the reviews on productreview.com.au, not good at all…..

    • +4

Those reviews are for different models?

    • +3

The poor feedback is up to 7 years old. New was also model released in 2019.

      • Old models but the feedback talked more about the abysmal customer service than the products. Maybe it's better now, maybe it's just the same. It's a valid concern I would have thought but downvoters that disagree have at it and bury this comment too simply because you disagree LOL.

  • I recently paid $1925 to get a Daikin FTXF25TVMA 2.5kw unit installed and my old unit removed and disposed of. Considering the price of this unit, did I pay way too much? They visited for the quote within a couple of days and installed a week later. Took them 40 minutes. In Canberra other AC places were saying it would be at least two weeks if not three to four before they could come out for even a quote.

    • +4

Do you really want us to break the bad news to you?

      • Yes. How badly did do? What could I have expected to pay elsewhere for the same work?

    • +2

So you basically paid around $1200 For the install? That's bloody crazy!

      • Yeah install and removal of the old unit. How much should I have paid?

        • +2

I was lucky enough to pay only $400 (incuding the external bracket for thr outdoor unit) when I got my units installed. The installer said that even if I had n existing unit that needed replacing and it was just a back to back install, he would only have charged about $50 more. When I rang around i was quoted as high as $900, but interested and found a cheaper quote. Don't be suckered when n installer says installing a 7kw unit costs more then a 2.5kw unit, because the install says it doesn't, because the install process is the same, except the units are slightly bigger.

          • @BlitzR: I also paid $400 a unit.

          • @BlitzR: Where was this?
If it's Sydney, can you share the details of the installer?

          • @BlitzR: you don't mind me asking, was the work completed by and plumber and electrician? or just an air con guy?
i got quote between $770-$1049 for my 5kw unit to be installed.

            • @godofpizza: The guy that did mine said he purely does aircons during the summer periods.

    • +1

Ballpark for a Daikin - they aren't cheap aircons.

      • +1

Quick search shows that the FTXF25TVMA unit sells for just over $800. So that's nearly a $1200 install cost.

        • Yeah I saw that but I have no idea how much the labour of install and removal of the old unit should be, especially in the middle of the summer.

    • +20

If they did it in 40 mins, I can assure you it was not done properly or to code.

Firstly, it is required by code in Canberra for every new install or replacement to have an isolating switch installed, which obviously takes time and generally means replacing the wiring.

Also, if one is not already in place in the power board, it is required, again by code, to have an RCD installed.

I would also suggest that they did not vac the system out nor replace the existing pair coil, (copper pipes). As far as I can recall, all new units use R32 refrigerant which runs at a much higher pressure than previous gasses such as R410, and as such the pipes are also required to code be replaced to handle the higher pressures. Another little known fact is that R32 is somewhat flammable. Worth the risk of a dodgy install?

Not vacuuming the system out means there will be some condensation in the system which can and does shorten the system life. We generally vac down to 400 or so microns, which is about 0.01 of a psi.

Lastly, I would expect that you will not get electrical certification for the install.

The fastest new install we have done is 1 hr 20 mins and that's with 4 of us. One qualified fridgie and a trades assistant and one qualified electrician and an apprentice.

Fastest replacement we have done is just over one hour with the same crew.

To top that off, to remove a unit, you are required by law to evac all the existing gas in the system into a gas cylinder and disposed of by returning said cylinder to an authorised outlet, such as Actrol etc. And not just let it out into the atmosphere. Plus the old system has to be dumped responsibly, ie; at a scrap metal recycler.

That said, yes you got ripped off. A proper straight forward install is more like $700, a similar replacement is more like $800ish. All installs are different. If there is extra pair coil, drain, duct (the stuff that covers the pipe work), roof runs for wiring, house construction etc etc.

Get caught doing the wrong thing and the fines for installers are in the tens of thousands of dollars.

And in our experience, Daikin are dreadful to deal with re warranty, which is why we refuse to install or repair them.

      • +2

        Hey revheadgl.

        You seem very knowledgeable

Just wondering if you have any good websites to read to learn everything about aircons and the installation process to lessen chance of getting ripped off?

And how to pick correct size aircon
        And maintenance tips

        Thanks

        • +11

          No worries.

Most A/C websites have a recommendation section but we tend to size aircons on the individual areas.

Do NOT ask a salesman for a recommendation as they almost always try to sell you a unit that is larger than you need. More profit equals higher commission I guess.

Its a battle we consistently have. Too small, it wont cycle, too large and it will shut off rather than ramp down as inverters should. Either way it will just cost you more to run.

To not get ripped off, a start would be to ensure they are at least qualified, have an ARCTIK license and are or use licensed electricians. There are plenty of doggy installers out there and I have seen some shockingly bad installs that we have done replacements on.

Get a few quotes. If it sounds too cheap, give it a miss, would be my suggestion.

As far as sizing goes there are a lot of things to take into consideration such as climate, room size, ceiling height, house construction, roof and or wall insulation, how many people are regularly in the room, window direction, is it a kitchen etc etc.

If you like, give me some idea of the room you want to aircon and I will give you my best guess based on the fact that I cant see the room.

Maintenance is easy, keep the filters clean, wash them with a hose, blow them dry with a yard blower and a give them a light quick spray with any disinfectant spray you prefer.

          Cheers.

          • @revheadgl: Thanks Revheadgl.
Off topic. Saw your post on the soniq h10 mini hi fi.
            Do you still recommend it?
            Are the headphone amp good?
            Thanks

            • +1

@congo: Ah yes. Still have both, still happy with them.

Not a massive headphone fan and only have some very ordinary Sony headphones, but they sound ok to me for late night listening.

If you want super loud, these may not be for you though.

Decent quality sound that blows away any other budget mini system and sound bars? Definitely

Not the Harman Kardon, Bowers & Wilkins setup that is my HT system, but still very worthwhile. Especially if you get it on sale for around the $170 mark.

              Hope this helps.

          • @revheadgl: Thanks

            Just average size
            bedroom, kitchen, livingroom

Its early days though. I dont plan getting air con until i get solar panels. Which might be 1-2 years in future

            • +2

@ATTS: Well that means three splits. We do not do ducted so cannot offer any advice in that regard.

Bedroom? A 3.5m x 3.5m with standard ceiling height in a well insulated single story house with no west facing windows in a moderate climate, I would recommend a 2.5kw unit.

Kitchens and living rooms are harder to guess without seeing them as a lot of rooms are open to other areas.

Split systems will not cool areas well that are open to other areas though. The return air is in top of the indoor unit and will not cool well any further than the fan can blow. Convection helps as well a fan in a doorway etc but they are limited.

              • +1

@revheadgl: Can I also please get your advice on a study room that is 2.9m x 3.0m on ground floor of a normal insulated double storey house, with standard ceiling height? The room has a window that has north-east aspect, with blockout blinds. This room will be used to keep several buckets of fresh flowers over 2-3 days, ideally at temperatures of 17'c day & night.

Will 2.5kw split unit be too big? Otherwise if I get a 2.0kw unit, will it be powerful enough to go down to approx 17'c?

I also noticed that MHI has an even smaller unit at 1.7kw, probably too small?

Would appreciate your thoughts on this, thanks in advance!

p/s The house already has a central ducted system with 2 zones (upstairs & downstairs) but it's not possible to run downstairs at 17'c without freezing the family! Hence I'm thinking of adding a split system in the study room.

          • @revheadgl: Thanks for the info!

I’m in Canberra and do need an install though not urgently. Can you pm me your company name and phone num ?

      • +1

Fantastic level of insight. Thank you very much.

Do you have any suggestions as to how I can try determine myself if they shortcutted the install and in turn how I might be able to approach them about it?

"Get caught doing the wrong thing and the fines for installers are in the tens of thousands of dollars." I'd assume if they have done the wrong thing and I can prove it to them then if this is true, they will be falling over themselves to remedy it for free at least.

        • +3

Not a problem. I have in the past deliberately avoided interaction re aircon here but this really ticked me off.

So yeah, ask for an inspection from your local electricity supplier. They will tell you if it is within code. Also check the installers license number.

If they are unlicensed, you will most likely have no hope of recourse.

          • @revheadgl: Ok cool I will give that a go. Their invoice lists a NSW license number and an 'ARC license' number too.

          • @revheadgl: Hi there, how do I contact you?
I need a quote for install 2 unit air conditioner.
            Thank you.

            • @Barbequemilk: As long as you are in Canberra, PM me and I will give you contact details.

Any chance you're practicing in the ACT? I'm looking to get a quote for a new unit installed if you're able to provide one.

Shoot me a message - apparently I can't start a conversation with you via OzBargain because of your profile settings.

        • We are in Canberra. I just changed my message settings so you can PM me.

Don't listen to the clown guys. This so-called plumber who has been working around appliances for a long time is salty because ppl with common sense neg-ed his post about the cheap n nasty Hyundai aircon (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/509072) sold by Kogan, which only came with 1 years warranty and had no clear info about after sales support. You might even get abusive DMs from him if you are in opposition to what he says.

  • Will this sufficiently cool a 23sq open planned house?

    • -1

      No

    • +1

      U will need about a 5kw system

      https://www.fujitsugeneral.com.au/residential-range/economat…

This site will help you out. It will list the Fuji models to use, but at the same time shows how many kws the units are so u know what you need.

    • Will this sufficiently cool a 23sq open planned house?

Only if it is very well designed and built, ie well insulated, double-glazed if in colder area, no east/west sun exposure, …

    • 23sq or square metres? 23 squares is over 200 square metres, which no single sit is going to do, let along a 2.5kw one.

      • How do you live in a 23sqm "House"…. my living room alone is 71sqm

        • Obviously the house isn't 23sqm, but the people replying seem to think it is.

  • Big enough for 13sqm?

  • How much would installation of this typically cost?

    • +1

Ranges from 400 to 900 for back to back install. It all comes down to ringing around to get the best price. Also dont be suckered into being told it costs more to install a 7kw compared to a 2kw system

        • +1

This is the advice from a qualified installer that installed the aircons at my house. He charged me 400 for the units ranging from 2.5kw to 7kw. So I'm sure he know what he is talking about, more then some so-called plumber who says he has been in the appliance industry for years. I bet the only white goods related thing that he has touched are toilets, so that's why he talks so much $hit. Right @worker?

          • -6

@BlitzR: So there is no difference between an aircon drawing 4A or one drawing 15A just use a double adapter I guess. No extra cost at all as you say. Lol muppet!

            • +1

@worker: @worker Well electrically speaking, Circuit breakers will cost the same, and cable the same also, 2.5mm sq cable can take like 25A depending on a few factors.

The main reason id charge extra is the units are heavier and harder to move lol.

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: Yup the cost different for the different amp circuit breaker n isolator is minimal. Jus shows how much BS this so-called plumber is talking

  • -1

Does the installer need any special tools for this, aside from the vacuum pump?

I guess he'd need a pump like this:

Any recommendations for a good quality installer in Sydney with reasonable pricing?

    • +1

      Interested as well.

    • I went through serviceseeking. Com.au and received 6 or 7 quotes within 2 hours, cheapest $399 to $770. I needed for the bedroom where back to back installation not possible. GG also provides installation service with delivery and removal, thinking to go to the store and discuss, I think GG services should be more reliable.

      • i also got quoted thru the GG and they subcontracted the work out to a local installer. The GG got a better price for the installation, than thru cold calling the same company with the exact same details.

    • -4

same/same Fujitsu is not worth the extra $$$$$ IMO

      • +1

Fujitsu are in the top 3 air conditioner brands? Behind Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Panasonic.
        While Hisense is new.

        • Almost doubt the price ? Just for a brand name, that’s crazy

    • +2

I can't really say if the Fuji is better then the hisense because hisense is new on the market, but I've had a Fuji for 3yrs and my parents have had one for 7yrs and worked flawlessly.

    • You can get the older version of that model when on sale for cheaper than this, but that is during winter.

  • Any deals on Panasonic CS/CU-Z50TKR C5.0kW?
    Thanks

  • Any recommendations for a good quality installer in Canberra with reasonable pricing?

    • Surprising that no-one suggested a diy install. This OB after all

Pre-gassed, just need to vac down the evap.
plug into 10A outlet - no additional wiring if rcd already present
      Simple b2b plumbing job

About an hours work for a good guy but don't let that stop someone taking $1000 off you.

      ;-)

      • Suggesting DIY on OzBargain can be hazardous :(

  • Was looking for a aircon and came across this, thanks for the post
