For me in the end it wasn't.

The Acer does have a better screen (both in brightness and colour accuracy) and the newer generation i5 which will probably give some performance boost for more intensive activities.
It is also lighter but after playing with one in JB I found that it feels really plasticy even though it is made of metal (Magnesium/ Lithium alloy apparently).

Also, with the coupon code and cashback the HP is $694 which makes the gap $300.
Unless you really need the better screen for editing photos or for using the laptop outdoors I don't think that it is worth the extra.

I bought one for my wife to watch you tube videos, surf the web and so some light Office work and so it fits the bill perfectly while having better CPU/ Ram and storage than the real budget laptops.

    • If you want Thunderbolt 3, USB-C charging, a better screen (colour accuracy and brightness), a touchscreen AND a 54Wh battery (much better battery life overall, HP only has 37.7Wh battery). I'd say it would be worth it. Remember to price beat at Officeworks if you can.

      • Shame officeworks is sold out everywhere and wont be able go

        • price match jbhifi with gift cards

  • Anyone known or can check to see if it has a TPM chip?

    • Under device manager there is TPM 2.0 listed.

  • Thanks OP.

Picked one up for the missus since she severely cracked the screen on her Macbook Pro

    Really good bargain

  • Just picked up one in Osborne Park perth. Just updating now. Will update on initial thoughts shortly…it looks so nice and screen is brighter than I expected for 300 nits.

  • Have been using laptop for last 24 hours. Excellent machine. Keyboard is really fast, and as good as anything ive used. Full charge last night, updated a few apps, watched joker, and did some printing etc, and battery life is fantastic, still rocking over 55% and would have used it for 4 hours at least last night and a couple this morning. Wifi is really solid, 866mbps. Also, the keyboard deck is suprisingly stiff considering the light weight. Mag Alloy is awesome. Love it.

    • Does it heat up under usage and also 8gb of ram seems enough? Thanks.

      • Have not done any modelling in excel yet, but while typing emails, chrome open, spotify open, and the laptop wasnt heating up at all. When i was on power, and not battery the fan's kicked in slightly when updating windows, but the PC was very snappy and seemed to breeze through anything i threw at it. Core temp was showing CPU temps around 40-50c. The 8GB of ram is fine IMO. I am not planning to do any video or photo editting so i doubt i will need 16GB. However, if you are planning to do this, i would consider the i7 model. But for excel, mail, chrome, etc spotify, and light editing i reckon 8GB is fine. OMG, as a long time mac user, i am so impressed with the quality of this thing. love the 16/9 aspect, netflix looks amazing.

        • Thanks for your prompt and thorough answer!

          • @Lucius7372: No worries. Probably the biggest difference overall vs say a Macbook Air (which i was considering), is just how light this thing is. Its seriously light weight, and holding them both in the shop sold it for me. The Swift 5 is much lighter in the hand. The touchscreen and battery life sold it for me. So far so good.

  • navy gold sexiness.
