Cheers op. Does CR have a flat 12% today??

    • What did it say when you looked at their website?

    • You are correct, applogies seems to only be 3.50 % on electronics.

  • What would be better for long term storage? Seagate or WD?

    • +2

Same-same they're all just the luck of the draw.

Just make sure you have another cooy.

Going by Backblaze HDD reports it appear generally that Seagate and WD have similar reliability with some particular HDD having higher failure rates and this may indicate bad HDD batches for certain models.

Though you have to take into account that Backblaze reports are not conclusive proof of reliability of HDD because of the how Backblase use their HDD ie being data centre that they retire HDD when they show early signs of failure, they used 24/7 and might be worked harder than consumer HDD use. Also fact that Backblaze HDD primary consistent of Seagate and HGST HDD so the reliability on WD may not be as accurate as Seagate.

To answer your question for portable HDD I would say Seagate might be better for long term storage compared to WD. This is due to the fact that as far as I know Seagate does not soldered the USB connection to HDD SATA port this may make Seagate slightly more reliable long term if HDD breaks due to USB connection breaking because you may still be able recover data if you shuck the HDD and plug it into a PC.

4TB drives can be had for about $100 at times.
You pay a lot for the extra 1TB.

    • +1

I have been waiting for portable 4TB prices to drop at sub-$100 prices.. but it seems the only recent deals I’ve seen are the always OOS BW deals posted elsewhere. Hope we get more of them soon!

  • Does it require external power?

    • Yes. No battery inside. But 2.5", so power over USB.

OP should say "Portable" or 2.5".

Only 2 years warranty. Don't think these will last long.

Only 2 years warranty. Don't think these will last long.

I have at least 20 that have lasted years longer with zero failures so your statement is bullshit.

      • Well if they were so reliable they should just offer 3 years like other drives. Not so confident that it will last more then 3 years maybe?

        • What rubbish. You really have NFI what you're talking about. If they offer a 3 year warranty the price goes up and the warranty isn't valid in Australia anyway.

          • +1

@Maverick-au: So if you purchase this product from Australia you do have valid warranty. So basically Ur saying you don't really have 2 year warranty cos it's US.

They have one Seagate HDD with 3 years warranty and this one has 2 years. Why not offer 3 years on all your products if they all have the same reliability?

And I have n I idea because what I'm saying makes sense. Whether or not they last as long a company offering a less warranty just shows the confidence in the product.

The warranty applies in the country of purchase.

Different products have different warranties, warranties cost money and this is a portable product.

And I have n I idea because what I'm saying makes sense. Whether or not they last as long a company offering a less warranty just shows the confidence in the product.

Warranty length has nothing to do with anticipated product life. We have a Miele dishwasher over 20 years old that had a 1 year warranty.

    • It is cuz it is from the US and Seagate is only 2 year warranty there, instead of 3 within Australia

Got Officeworks to price beat so got it for $136 and got 3 years warranty instead of 2

    • did OW take into account the shipping cost in the discount?

      • I have Amazon prime so it is free delivery.

        • so you had to prove to officeworks that you got free delivery?

          • @pinkybrain: Yeah, just told me to add to cart and had a look that it was free delivery

  • Does it require Amazon prime with AU or US region? Thanks!
