Going to party like it's six sixty nine

  • Likely to be the same tv as the $559 Eko branded tv from Big W:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/508377

    • I'd guess it's a Brauhn, same as some other aldi TVs I've seen. I've heard they are decent.

    • +2

Well its not according to the ports.

      • Ports are different, remote is exactly the same.

        • +6

Many remotes are the same across tvs.

      • +3
        • Is it decent?

          • +1

@delfredo: Not as versatile as a proper Android TV which will allow you to install your own apps directly onto the tv.

Not the end of the world though; you can always plug in a separate Android/Apple box.

        • That one doesn't mention HDR though.

        • Should post that then, it's a better deal.

          • @Ryballs: Here's the thread about it at a slightly higher price of $595

But the $559 one with Android is better anyway

        • OK, so the UHD version doesn't have androidTV? and cheaper at bigw if you can find it?

      • I've got the printed catalogue, it's definitely a Bauhn (they even mention the Bauhn website in the ad)

    • High dynamic range.

Looks like it's High Downvotes Rate for you…

        He's the poor man's jv.

No mention of WiFi, I assume it has.

    • Could a smart tv not have Wi-Fi?

  • +12

Bought the aldi 65 in her 18 months ago , here's a brief little pros and cons

    Pros

•aldi 60 day returns if your unhappy with it

•ARC worked well with Chromecast to turn tv on and off with voice assistant

    • record live tv was a nice feature to have

    • bright content looked decent for its price bracket.

    Cons

    • had to exchange my tv after first one had clouding present throughout the panel which made night scenes look very cheap (yes I know it's a cheap tv)

    • speakers a bit on the tinny and quiet side.

    • IR detection for the tv on the wall was horrible and had new batteries on the remote , I think they had it in a bad spot on the tvs bottom side.

•no updates ever but then again what is there to update?

If you want a cheap tv for the kids then this tv will fit the bill. But it definitely is subpar panels and quality control was abysmal even from what my brother had with his unit having 12 dead pixels across 2 clusters which they did replace with another one which was nice but then he had worse clouding in the replacement unit.

Ultimately got a refund as even the replacement units clouding was something we could not unsee. Made it hard to see dark scenes in movies as the backlight and clouding muddied the scenes. You get what you pay for and I'd say spend the extra little more for a Hisense

    • To good to be true!!! WHYYYYYY

  • Nay mention of wifi, I assume t'hast

      T. T'hast. T'hast wifi.

Never thought I'd see Rammstein quoted on here!

  • 1 x YPbPr/CVBS

Why is it that cheapo ALDI TVs have component in, but higher end TVs (e.g. Sony X95G) only have composite in? If a manufacturer wanted to include an analog port, why would they choose composite in over component/composite shared in?

    • +6

Can't apply content protection technologies on an analogue cable so the content providers put pressure on TV makers to only provide a subpar analogue connection and force consumers to use HDMI

      • hmmm, content protection, asking for a friend… does this mean my friend can't play his NZB sourced movies? Even through his pc to the tv's HDMI, wifi or rj45 link… My friend is really anxious about this now…

      • Thanks, I hadn't realised that was the reason. Kind of annoying for use cases where HDMI isn't normally supported though (old games consoles) - makes hooking them up with a decent picture more expensive/involved than it should be.

    • +2

The LG C9 comes with both the composite and component input if you wanted something on the higher end with that functionality. I personally will never use them though, but i can imagine it comes in handy for people playing retro games.

  • +5

It accepts HDR signal, then turns it into SDR. This screen doesn't have the brightness or color gamut for HDR.

    • +11

Yup, I'm not negging this deal but it's a tad silly to highlight this panel having HDR as in reality Aldi are being very misleading by stating this like it's a HDR 10 bit panel.

Unsure why folks are voting for this deal as it's essentially a 65" panel that is all but certain to be decidedly ordinary and no better than a plethora of other 65" options that are the same price or cheaper.

I'm a bit surprised by the run over the past 12mths by 'the masses' for very cheap 55"+ 4k displays….as if you've only $500-700 to spend on a display are you really going to have much 4k content to feed it? And you know they've making a gawd awful mess upscaling SD or even 720p material.

Each to their own if you really must have a big panel at the cheapest price but I wonder how many of them will be outside for council cleanup days within the next 3yrs? Cheap is great but once you factor in worse performance in all areas, not as easy to use, likely shorter lifepan and minimal resale value I'd advocate paying a 20-30% premium for a brand name's lower-mid range panel on sale…but each to their own, so no neg from me. :-)

      • How is it silly on Aldi's part? Almost every manufacturer does the same thing

      • The reason I haven't pulled the trigger to buy a 4k TV is that I don't have 4k content to feed it.
Is there a FHD TV, that you recommend ?
It seems the good brands only do 4K TVs now

        • -1

There is 4k content to be found in plenty of places, most streaming services offer a heap of 4k content. Otherwise 4k movies can be bought cheap at jb and elsewhere such is 2 for 30 and 40. 4k players are also cheap. Alternatively look at an apple TV 4k. Again heaps of options. We are well beyond a lack of 4k content now. Certainly wouldn't be looking at FTA for 4k. Their HD is kinda crappy.

        • There isn't much risk buying an ALDI TV, if it isn't good you return it. The trouble with aldi is that every time they bring out a tv it's different or made by someone else. So comparing it to the previous model is pointless.

It looks like their 58" is the best bang for buck at $444 or whatever price they had it, only a handful of stores have stock.

Failing that, look into getting a 2019 TCL or a good Hisense.

If you need a name brand with real HDR you would need to get start at a Samsung 8000 series.

    • how do you know this without seeing the product?
I get it.. the price.. but don't knock it back until you know for sure.

  • +1

Is the TV panel any good?

    • +5

      No

The question will be is it good enough for what you want to use it for.

      • +2

The above comment pretty much nails it.

TV's perhaps moreso than most goods are VERY subjective - so what one person will swear is a great one another average person will say is ghastly.

The only good thing about the Aldi one is that their return policy is hassle free and very simple - though I'd be very hesitant to want to transport a 65" panel any more than absolutely necessary as breaking it will be very easy.

Considering even a cheap panel SHOULD last for 3-5yrs minimum - I'd think most folks can find a lil more $$$ if it's to be a primary TV - if it's a backup or for the kids etc perhaps this will be ample but expecting great tings from it will almost certainly end in disappointment as it's a made for price point product.

JB Hifi's 65 inch 4k is $698 standard, so not the best deal there is.

      Isn't 669 less than 699?

      • -2

Yeah but only 5% less, is it worth the risk of an unknown TV for such a small difference in price?

        • +3

I've never heard of FFalcon Televisons before. Isn't that an unknown TV?.

          • @hollykryten: Exactly. Ffalcon is rebadged soniq/TCL, Brauhn isn't likely to be any better or worse at this price. Either way you are paying 670-700 for a 65k 4k TV at a bricks and mortar store in Aus. same-same imho. At this range… 5% IS the deciding factor.

          • +1

@hollykryten: You can find the exact Ffalcon model online with reviews, etc for it plus it's made by TCL. Aldi TVs are different specs every time, all sorts of rebadged cheapo brands, and there are no reliable reviews for upcoming models.

    • That FFalcon goes down to $598 at times.

  • Anyone know anything about the OS? 'Smart' is rather vague, and it might be a valid selling point if it's better than the other cheap TVs in this price bracket.

    • +1

It's intentionally vague. It usually means that the TV has a basic web browser, and can work with YouTube. In the Aldi catalog, this one says it can do YouTube and Netflix, no mention of web browsing.

If you want a proper smart TV, consider purchasing a non-smart TV, and connecting a small Android box instead. Some years back, a lot of smart-TV owners were caught out when Youtube changed from Flash video to H265 video. Their smart TVs would no longer work with Youtube, and for most of the TVs, no upgrade was made available. With a separate Android box, you can upgrade the box, or buy a new Android box for ~$50. And with an Android box, you can install apps from Google Play, you normally can't do that on a smart TV. Only downside is that you'll have one less HDMI port available, and two remote controls instead of one. But probably more USB ports, which is useful to plug in your preferred keyboard and mouse, as well as a HDD with stored movies.

      • I forgot another advantage: if your Android box somehow gets corrupted, and you're not an Android Guru, you can just unplug the Android box and take it to a friend who knows how to fix it. Or just burn another ~$50 and replace it. It's a lot more difficult if the "smart" bit of your smart TV gets corrupted.

Another thing: the box doesn't have to be an android box, it could be a Raspberry Pi computer, running Kodi or any of the similar media playback systems.

  • Try this one. My friend has bought this and so far no complaints. Iits HDR + supports with Erosnow , yupptv and more apps. Does the screen share with android and windows. Its $689 + delivery

  • Is this the same as the previous one (Google Certified)?

If so it's supposed to be very good- https://www.channelnews.com.au/reviewnew-aldi-bauhn-google-c…

  • I thought the picture of the TV is measuring the length of the bridge

    • No. Its measured diagonally. So no matter the aspect ratio. Eg 4:3 or 16:9 its measured the same way.

  • Is this an oled TV?

    • Nope not oled

      • Thanks

        • the question is..
is the advertised HDR real or not?

          • @elcheapoinoz: Read above, no its not. Nor would you expect it to be at this price point

            • @Mikinoz: I did.. there's only people claiming it's not HDR (as far as I've seen) there's no reason why it can't be, besides the price.
how can we know for sure unless we know the panel, and it's specs (on this TV, not on a similar looking/different brand TV)

  • +1

Anyone bought one today? Can we get a review?

  • This deal is still current if you can find , a few around campbelltown nsw, I bought 1, and fairly happy, I went from non hdr 65 bauhn to this 1 cos I couldn’t find a 75 close, hdr is verified by xbox one x & ps4 pro & can visually see improvement, not sure if hdr but my separate hdmi switcher no longer works for my consoles unless i drop res, also awkward to set up tv on harmony 850, not in logitech database, need separate source, change source and select source commands if also using with fetch etc but tv seems to be what specs state & has a decent pic, didn’t really check sound as using sound bar(via optical)
