Ultimate Her Gift Card?

For my 30th my dad was supposed to buy me an epirb. Live on a boat. I like to scuba, fish, hike, travel etc. I own 3 nice dresses vacpaccd. 1 for funerals,1 weddings/chruch and 1 everything else nice. One pair of shoes to match them all. Literally that's it. He knows this. Actually helped with some boatwork before.
Anyway, instead of the epirb one can only assume out of spite he bought me an ultimate her gift card valued at $50. (Background info: he's not talking to me cause I lent him a large amount of money and he got drunk and abusive later the same week, still waiting on repayment. He has pride issues.)

I have enough shorts and shirts vacpaccd in different sizings to last the next 10 years+ the same with underwear and swimwear. Im not sure what to do with this gift card? I don't really drink tea or wear clothes that I don't expect to be sunbleached or covered in egnine grease or fish guts.

Any suggestions on how to spend the card? Also any deals on an epirb greatly appreciated, my old ones about to expire.

EDIT: I've decided I'll be donating the card. It's much easier than trying to sell online or head into a faraway store to maybe find something I don't even need or want. I'm sure someone else will get a real use from it.

You can try selling it in the Classified forum page.

Watch out for Anaconda and BCF sales I guess.

    • That ain't livin'!

    • Isn't that the ultimate him card? The girl one says Lorna Jane t2 and seed and some other random girly bs. Didn't think they were interchangeable. He knew the male version was perfect for me. Grrrr….

      • +1

I was gonna say the same, but I think that's in reference to your epirb deal question

  • For those playing at home, it's a gift card only valid for these stores:

    David Jones | Lorna Jane | Bras N Things | Seed Heritage | Napoleon Perdis | T2 | Swarovski

    And in-store only

OP, I'm sure you could find something at David Jones

Yeah I had a quick look online but they don't really sell anything I need on first glance. Im Good for towels linen clothing electronics etc. I have pretty much everything apart from tackle, flares, random boat improvement items etc. Do need a few fuses and some larger, maybe 6 gauge wire. About 15m… Nothing I can think of from the stores on said card unfortunately.

      • Some sort of plastic containers or something to store stuff in?

        • Got plenty. Went nuts on a price error for sistema on Woolies online about a year ago unfortunately. Although I could always ndo with more vac seal bags…Food and clothing(also good for sails) Good thinking!

          • @lette: Food items on clearance from Christmas possibly

            • +2

@spackbace: That's a really good idea. I got an insane amount of hot sauce hampers and cocktail mix buckets(perfect for water bladders in fridge/freezer) from target and Kmart for almost 90% off earlier today. I'll head into the cbd next week and have a look. Do have to get scripts rewritten amongst yet another Bunnings trip. Never buy a yatch. Unless you want to spend over 8 hours a week in Bunnings haha.

              • @lette: Like you're complaining about a Bunnings trip!

                • @spackbace: You try going to the woodville SA one! My god no-one knew what a multimeter even meant. A worker behind the tool counter didn't know the difference between a hammer drill and drill driver, let alone the fact some have chuck keys others don't(whole reason I needed a new one grrr). Had to help some poor lady find the electric motor for her dimmer because when she asked for help the girl ran off to get someone….20 minutes ago. I was being indesisive about deck lighting and had the time to help.

Now..of were talking the Armadale, WA store…I could spend a day there. Decent clean layout, intelligent, hardworking staff

      • Depending on where you are David Jones sell food.

        • Closest to Adelaide CBD one, although still a fair bit of a hike. Would combine it with a whole day thing in the cbd methinks. We do love fancy chutneys mustards hot sauces etc. We eat a lot of cheese plate, platters and cold food so condiments are king!
          Thanks for the idea

          • @lette: Isn't cheese made from milk?
Or do you eat the alternatives?

            • @dasher86: I can still stomach it if it's not white and thin. So not into cream or milk but I can still have yogurt and cheese without getting to inside my head too much, although yogurt sometimes….

        • They also have booze

          • @JIMB0: DJs doesn't sell alcohol in their Adelaide store.

Give it to your dad for his next birthday.

    • +1

You know what. I'm actually that disappointed in him I may just do that if no-one comes up with a better idea. His birthday is in March so not far off. My mum will get a kick out of it too for sure haha. Good idea!

    • This.

      Gold.

    Stop whinging..you still got a present! :p

    • The whining is mainly because I could have got my own epirb for $200 less than the basic model. This was way nicer with water sensor and now because of his childishness I'm stuck with a gift card I'm most likely going to a) give to charity or b) spend on David Jones food or c) regift back to him.
And again. Am also out a lot more for an epirb than if I had bought it myself(unless sale comes alone before exp date)

…because of his childishness I'm stuck with a gift card

        It's only… $50! Might be a lot when you're 13 years old, but you're 30!

I don't know your family circumstances, but a "Merry Christmas" and a hug from my dad is worth more than anything he can buy me.

Also, you've said that you just lent him a large sum of money - what makes you assume he even has enough to buy you an EPRIB? Those things aren't exactly cheap.

        • Because of his childishness none of his children got a hug or a Merry Christmas from him actually.. This was a belated birthday present in an envelope left at my grandma's. No card or name. None of us got Christmas presents this year from him come to think of it and one of us is 12. Whilst I agree with you he's not even providing the basics. This money was lent a fair while ago and his cashflow problems have been solved according to his mother.

Rather not get into it any deeper but do think carefully before doling out family advice.

            @lette:

…do think carefully before doling out family advice.

I'm not trying to dole out family advice. Your post just makes it seem like you think you're entitled to a certain high value item as a present and now you're angry and frustrated because you didn't get it. Presents are not rights and the receiver doesn't get to dictate what they get.

            • @bobbified: Actually yeah I do because he promised it, it was pertinent to my safety, he even picked the model…BUT. One week before my 30th birthday after pet sitting for him he got back to SA, got drunk and screamed at my partner and myself for "being better than him" because we're already retired and he has pride issues. We called my mother who divorced him for his alcoholism and abuse earlier this year. She came and picked us up and took us back to our boat asap all the while saying sorry lette I told you this would happen. Frankly, I was the only one left talking to him.
I called him a few weeks later hoping he'd call down and apologize. He did not. It was quite abusive. I haven't heard from him since except for this envelope.
The teenagers have, but it's just answer the phone or visit him and cop abuse and negativity.

So no. I am not happy with what I got. He is a petty man who did this on purpose. Everyone knows this in my extended family. To are not in my family so of course you don't and make stupid assumptions.
Thanks for bringing all that up stranger.

              • @lette: Oh and the loan was to buy opal because he was having "business cashflow issues", not bills, rates or food just a good opal package.

          • @lette: Thats the thing with lending money to friends and family. If you lend money, don't expect it back.

Whilst it's a sucky situation, consider yourself lucky that you were even able to get a $50 gift card from him. I know people who's father/husband committed suicide because of money problems, and now live with regrets.

            • @Ughhh: I agree about the loan. Friends and family in general I don't expect to get it back, but only one loan per person until it's paid of course. Just sucks..cause it's dad

        • Wow. Your dad gives you a Merry Christmas and a hug? Most I’d probably expect from my dad Christmas morning is “what’s for breakfast?”.

          • @SlappersOnly: Read my above comment to bobbify. I'd love a what's for breakfast..it's be the burnt eggs he liked when I was younger haha.

Donate to a Rural fire volunteer, as you live on water you may not see the impact fire has on properties you don't need 50 its small change to an adult

    • Awesome idea. This would put you on the high road.

    • +1

Yeah that was my initial thought actually. To be honest still leaning that way. Easier than selling it or heading to a David Jones and maybe finding something

  • +1

Could Ultimate Gift Card perhaps cancel it and carry the credit over to a Him gift card? Say that you received the Her card as a gift but it was a mistake? Couldn't hurt to try?

    • +1

If it were more than $50 I'd consider it but at that small amount I'm just going to donate it. Not worth the hassle and I'm sure someone out there needs it.

  • Sell it or suck it up and buy something nice for yourself. I’m sure you could get $40 easy for it on the classifieds.

    • Shame I couldn't find anything nice haha! Plan on donating it now. It seems easier than heading to a store to maybe find something or selling online

  • My condolences

  • Moisturizers for face & or skin

    • Not a bad idea. Think I'll be donating it though. Seems the easier option seeing as the card can't be used online.

    Sunscreen, hat/cap ?

Otherwise, gifts for friends/family or can you regift the gift card?

ps. I had to google EPIRB just in case it was the latest 'thing' that I didn't know I needed until I saw it on OzB 😀

    • +1

Great ideas. Decided to donate it instead, easier and probably more use to others.
Haha fair enough, they're not a very common item. I probably should have put a description in.
