Now the problem is how to get to see Shen Yun without fretting my Chinese communism party member parents.

    • -1

Well they've both neg'd you for even suggesting it

      • Don't worry, the Chinese spies outside the event will let them know. Easier way to break it to them.

    • +2

I was not actually aware about Shen Yun's background until I googled it, after reading your comment.

I had always assumed it to be an official Chinese government-backed cultural production.

      • -2

        Long live chairman Mao!!!

      • lol same, I always thought it was some commies propaganda show, but turns out they are anything but

interesting interview with the people from Shen Yun:

        • +4

China Uncensored is funded by the Falun Gong though.

          • @lolcoaster: sounds about right, they do mention the CCP's oppression of FLG alot on their show

    • +2

just tell them you are acting as commie spy to surveil the show

      • LOL

      • or perhaps Shen Yun organisers are spies posing as anti-CCP

    • +9

My mates, who are by no means pro or anti China, went, sold on the slick ads - and they felt dirty after the show

The target audience are the impressionable whites with a bias, that outnumber the Chinese audience and who are more likely to sign up to support the cult

The communist party is pretty rotten and a lot of the things they are doing (Uighur re-education camps, claiming most of the South China sea and building bases all over the place etc.) are completely wrong.

Nonetheless, significant parts of the Shen Yun show clearly serve to push some of the weird ideas that are part of the Falun Gong religious movement (e.g. denial of evolution) to unwitting audiences who think it is just some simple display of all Chinese culture. It also seems to not mention any link to the Falun Gong in most of its advertising flyers before you see the show, which is a bit dishonest in my opinion.

The Falun Gong should not be brutally persecuted, but I sure as heck am not gonna be supporting this weird religious movement with some of its truly odd ideas (which go far deeper and are far stranger than what is shown in parts of the show).

The person who started the movement in the 1990s and who remains the leader of the Falun Gong also seems a bit unhinged (to put it nicely) in his ideas (particularly the alien stuff): http://content.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2053761,00…

      • +1

So not only the people behind it are questionable but also the show material itself includes propaganda/religious messages?

        • +3

Yes, from previous shows this has been the case. They could have changed some of the messages recently but I think it is unlikely. And please downvoters, write an actual response to counter my arguments, I would like to hear your views

@JacobHarvey: Strange religion worshipping a 'god' who is a living person?

      • +2

Here's an extract of the interview with Li Hongzhi where he talks about the aliens:

"…The aliens have introduced modern machinery like computers and airplanes. They started by teaching mankind about modern science, so people believe more and more science, and spiritually, they are controlled. Everyone thinks that scientists invent on their own when in fact their inspiration is manipulated by the aliens. In terms of culture and spirit, they already control man. Mankind cannot live without science.

The ultimate purpose is to replace humans. If cloning human beings succeeds, the aliens can officially replace humans. Why does a corpse lie dead, even though it is the same as a living body? The difference is the soul, which is the life of the body. If people reproduce a human person, the gods in heaven will not give its body a human soul. The aliens will take that opportunity to replace the human soul and by doing so they will enter earth and become earthlings."

WTF? So Falun Gong is a Chinese cheap replicas of Scientology? ROFL

Imagine supporting a NED (CIA) funded, anti LGBT, anti medicine, anti science cult to watch cult propaganda just because you hate the CCP. Edit: forgot to add they're pro Trump too

    • Hmmmm, you are a Chinese, are you a spy?

The hotels look to be owned all by the same company

  • If I cancel my AMEX, would I be re-targetted with the once-off AMEX offers the next time they appear in 2020?
I have had mine for 4 years now and noticed that many are only provided to new AMEX card holders

I expect we won’t see any really good offers for the next couple of months

    • Probably, but the new amex offers are not that amazing, you'll get $10 off PayPal, $10 off Woolies. But everything else will still be luck of the draw

    • Are you sure. I have had one of my Amex cards for 6 years and the other 3 and I have had some great offers recently. For example the spend $200 in MYER get back $40 (on 10 cards), Get 20% Back up to $40 Checkout via PayPal (on 3 cards), spend $100 at Amazon get $20 Bback and spend $30 or more get $10 back, up to 2x at
David Jones - Capitol Grand Food Store(on 5 cards).

  • I wonder what it takes to be a shen yun dancer?

  • Ozbargain Wedding venue of choice :) I guess we can pull our amex cards together if a member is getting married at one of these places.

all 3 resorts are either in blue mountains or hunter valley so unless it's in the winter it's going to be smoking hot.

  • Lol Shen Yun.

  • Note that the statement credit is only valid for Shen Yun performances in Sydney when purchased through the Shen Yun website. Tickets for the Canberra and Melbourne performances can only be purchased on accredited third-party websites.

FLG is Chinese Scientology, take it with your own grain of salt. Their mouthpiece the Epoch Times is literally fake news and was recently banned from Facebook

Look up Epoch Media and draw your own conclusion.
