Let me ask and answer the normal question:

Q: Mi Box or Vodafone TV?
A: GENERALLY, VTV is a better choice.

      and cheaper local stock.

    • Yeah I really don’t get why these keep getting posted.

      • +11

And by the same person lol

        • Big Xiaomi fan 😂

Has the Vodafone TV even been updated to Android 8 yet? We're almost at Android 10 now, but at least the Xiaomi has a lighter-weight OS.

Furthermore, are Xiaomi Australia selling this locally now?

    • I have both, have moved the VTV into my lounge (primary) room mainly for the better remote control. But it's stuck on Android 7.1, pretty slack by Vodafone to not update us. The Mi Box does feel like a "snappier" device.

      • I did say "generally" :p

The FTA TV tuner was a deal breaker for me. I haven't found many apps that wouldn't work on 7.1 (that being said, my VTV is mainly for streaming + Plex in the second bed room).

        • Can you install Hulu on VTV? I have the Xiaomi and Shield but can only install Hulu on Xiaomi

Can you install Kayo sports on a VTV?

      • I always ask this too :)
        From https://help.kayosports.com.au/s/article/Kayo-on-Android-TV-…

What Android TV devices are supported by Kayo?

The Kayo Sports app for Android TV is available for Android TV OS version 7.0 and above. To optimise performance when streaming Kayo on your Android TV, you'll need to ensure your device meets the minimum hardware specifications. The Kayo SplitView feature has been optimised for the following Android TV devices:

        Xiaomi Mi Box
        …and more, of course.

      • Yes, you just have to sideload it.

Grab the Kayo apk, put it on a usb stick and plug into the VTV, then navigate to the usb stick using a file explorer app and install the apk.

    • Google home support for Android 8.which only mi and shield have

    Bloody exchange rate!

I was one of the many disgruntled people expecting this app from day one, so thanks for posting as I wouldn't have known otherwise.

  • Think the appeal is that it should support Netflix at 1080p with no hacks …..also depends on your NBN speed though.

    • Doesn't the vodafone box do this and 4k?

  • +1

Worth no more than $70, with upgraded SoCs now shipping to vendors.

    Wait for an updated device.

Can't get the Amazon Video app from Play Store on these unfortunately but you can side load it fairly easily. Very good unit.

I bought this one from Toby's deal website for $85 in Xmas got mine deliver in 10 days and at the moment it's for $80.75 free shipping. I can also install Kayo and it works very fine for me.

  • This or firestick for streaming netflix, stan, cinema hd etc?

    • The Firestick 4K is good, but not available directly in Australia. If you want to deal with the hassle of getting it from Amazon US you still can though.

  • I have both this and the Vodafone TV.. the VFTV is SOLID… i have to restart the Mi Box before each use and wait, as its laggy, stuttery as hell.. after that its fine.. till the next day

Never had these issues ever using my mi box for almost a year.

I have 3 different versions - the original, the white one that's completely in Chinese out of the box, and the Mi Box S.

All were updated whenever an update was available and none experienced that particular problem over the course of about 3-4 years when I got the 1st gen one.
And they're lightning fast, so I think you've either got a bad box, or maybe an app that's causing some grief.

I've a Shield too so I have a decent reference point.

That's old news run an update to latest patch and I haven't had to reboot my mi box for maybe 4ish months since latest patch I think

    • I rarely use the Vodafone TV now. Ok google turn on mi TV, ok google turn off mi TV comes in very handy.

I have none of that for Vodafone at moment

  • After going through several beta phases, the final version of Android TV 9 Pie for the Xiaomi Mi Box S model is already beginning to be distributed. For now it is not known if the classic Xiaomi Mi Box enters this update. The system, it seems, is very similar to the last beta 3 where all the main functions were working correctly.

  • For those who have the Vodafone TV and use an AVR receiver, how's the passthrough support using Kodi? Does it support Dolby TrueHD and DTS MA passthrough natively?

    • Didn't when I brought it at launch. That's why I returned it within week and replaced it with Apple TV 4K (which has been solid since).

    • I couldn't do truehd or dts HD with Vodafone TV either
