Laphroaig Quarter Cask $84.99 - Nick's Wine Merchant

250

Any opportunity to go into Dan Murphy's and make them shave 50 bucks off their store price is a good one for me.
Plus this is a great dram - but not for the faint hearted - it's peaty and bottled strong!

Up the revolution!!

    From their website:
Tasting note: Bright gold colour. First passing reeks of choc fudge and vanilla laced peat. After aeration, the bouquet loses a little of its perfume and becomes more seaweedy and oceanic. A subtle peppermint note combines with a touch of bandaid - outstanding aromatic complexity. Soft slightly oily entry builds into a typically robust, mouthfilling Laphroaig experience as waves of sweet smoke, salt, pepper, iodine and vanilla are delivered with a creamy, warming mouthfeel and a gentle spirit tingle. Finishes refreshingly dry and long with cocoa, peat and subtle baked citrus notes lingering. Impressive. 48% Alc./Vol.

      with a touch of Bandaid

lol yep. This is why I much prefer Ardbeg. Its like Laphroaig but without the bandaid.

  • Thanks! I seem to have missed most of the recent Lagavulin 16 deals :s

  • I've always said it tastes like bandaids. Not really enjoyable for me but each to their own. It's definitely an experience the first time you taste it.

Im wondering what sort of childhood you had that you know the taste of bandaids!

      • +2

Who says I ate them as a child :)

    • I get a bit of a freshly opened bandage smell from all Isley malts to varying degrees

Tastes like a fist full of dirt in the most glorious way possible!

    • That should definately be written on the bottle

  • I had a look the other day and Nick's seems to have most expressions of Laphroaig at the cheapest prices in Aus at the moment.
I'm guessing that as they're a Vic based store I won't be able to price match at Dan's?

  • This bottle is a bit contravention, needless to say, but I enjoy the flavour.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask is great, much better than their 10YO. Never pay full price though. It's not worth $135 and it's on sale a few times each year for the price above. I just finished a 1 litre bottle I bought from Nick's a while ago.

I would stock up again, however I visited Islay last year and bought quite a few different bottles from various distilleries. I highly recommend putting a trip to Islay on your bucket list if you're a fan of peaty whisky.

that and find someone from the scotch malt whiskey society to be your friend.
I once sat down to a meal with ~11 (cant recall exactly - go figure!) expressions of laphroaig in front of us.

    • I think I paid $79 from the last Aldi special. A trip to Scotland/Islay is in my bucket list. Hopefully i can get some bottles for my Bruichladdich collection.

  • For the non-peaty lovers, what do you guys recommend?

      Growing up.

Ignoring the trolls would be a start…

Few things that I've bought that I've enjoyed. Maybe a hint of peat and/or smoke - but nothing that makes for a mono-dimensional drink:

      • Highland Park 12yo

      • Johnnie Walker Green Label (especially if you see it on sale at a discount). I think it includes a portion of Talisker in the blend…

      • Dalwhinnie 15yo (no peat/smoke that I notice)

      • Aberlour A'bunadh (Cask strength & a bit pricey)

For what it is worth, I quite like Laphroaig Quarter Cask. OTOH Laphroaig 10yo quite convinces me that not everything is worth 'growing up' for!
