Is It Okay to Hide Discounted Items So It Can Be Bought Later on

Firstly, I would like to discuss this topic about how some people has its methods of purchasing items at 25% or up to 50% off without the risk of most stores running out of stock.

The first step is that people usually wait outside the shop before it opens on the day whether if they are catalogue deals or closing down or boxing day sales.

The second step is that whenever people find a product for example wireless headphones for $20, they usually hide it behind some stacked clothing or under display shelves until they make enough money they need to buy it.

Then, some people find this to be unfair because it ruins other customer's shopping trip and their experience, and it may be kind of selfish to do so.

And, comment below of what do you think about this?

Do you think it's right to hide discounted item(s) under the shelves until it gets discounted even further or when he/she makes enough to purchase it?

So you're asking if it's okay to be selfish?

    • no, I meant that it's not right to hide them because other shoppers might want this item

      • +1

That's a no from me dawg.

    • Isn't everyone a bit selfish?

How are those assignments going? Are we giving you good results for your essays?

After all, you've posed 2 questions now and haven't participated in either discussion. Generally that's what you do when you're actually interested in the topic, you partake in the chat

Do you think it's right to hide discounted item(s) under the shelves until it gets discounted even further or when he/she makes enough to purchase it?

Are people really doing this or just you?

Can't say I've heard people going to these crazy lengths to get a $20 pair of headphones on 'pay' day as per your example.

    • Some people might, but I don't because I'm not interested in a quadcopter and if I was interested, I would just go to another store like Kmart

      • if I was interested, I would just go to another store like Kmart

Huh? You said about people hiding things to buy later, how is going to a different store going to help?

        • -1

Because only if I'm interested, the cheapest option would be Kmart if I would want it now

      • -1

But I adready got headphones and they're wireless

  • +1

    This is definitely not okay.

What you're doing here is leaving a business to potentially (and based on probability, very likely) suffer financial losses in a manner they did not agree to.

You're not entitled to goods you have not yet purchase.

  • And Thank you to those who believe that hiding products is not right

    • +1

Why did you make this poll if you already know the answer, and are bias towards “it’s not right”?

Disclaimer: I don’t think it is right to be hiding items.

It's to show other people's opinions of how hiding stuff is bad compared to not hiding them

Eh, if it's a big chain store I say go for it. They will never sell something for a price they're not willing to accept.

    • you know that today, if you go to Kmart and grab a shopping trolley or two if you're strong enough. You could get these christmas items for at least 75% off. There are Christmas Crackers 8pck for 5 CENTS each.

My friend pops a ceiling tile out and stashes a few things up high. You'll see him walking around with a step ladder, hardly noticeable.

It's not right, or nice, or decent, or honest, or fair…

I'm surprised we need a forum topic on this kinda stuff

  • If you're a kid then yeah fair enough I'm not surprised. If you're not, then lol.

Its not right. But if I was still young and poor and kinda desperate for a deal, surely I'd do it.

Thank goodness I'm well off enough to preach from the moral high ground now.

My local Toyota dealer had a sale recently so I took a Hilux for a test drive and hid it so nobody could buy it.
    Was that wrong?

  • Not okay:

    • Waste business time and resources - e.g. during stocktake
    • Loss of profits - total loss or at best sell at initial price, but most likely discounted price - you've prevented the business from selling product at the highest price possible by removing it from other consumer competition

Real life example: recently I saw a guy do a thorough sweep under the shelves at my local Coles. Things that had fallen between and under the shelves were swept away into a rubbish heap. Imagine you had added to the pile by hiding some stuff under the shelves to purchase later on at a discount.

    • Loss of profits
      Coles

Nobody cares that MNC is losing profit because of this.

      • Nobody cares

Yep, only the unsophisticated people who can only think short term.

Guess who ultimately pays for business inventory shrinkage?

        • The local bakery, meat, groceries shops, etc., have been paying for it for years.

Is it selfish to keep a good fishing spot a secret?

Some people would find this to be unfair because it could ruin their/others fishing trip/experience if they fish somewhere else and don’t catch any fish.

    Poll needed.

    • How about prospectors that find gold nuggets?

    • Is it selfish to keep a good fishing spot a secret

No. No one owns the fishes or the spot, nor do anyone owe anyone a nice fish trip/experience.

    • Keeping secret is not hiding. It's not like you're picking up the fishing spot and stashing it elsewhere that makes it harder to find.

  • Op, hiding stock is wrong. Borden them instead.

  • I’ve FOUND hidden products a couple of times. When an item has a good special, but no stock, always check behind the neighbouring products …

  • The practice highlights a mental issue lending itself to "a..al retention"…
Hate to see the house… biscuits hidden, the remote hidden, dirty undies hidden…
If you can not afford the item allow someone else the opportunity to purchase.
Stop playing with the management of the store and fellow shoppers.
Tell these "some people" to see a doctor

  • my local WW does similar, heavily discounted meat in the freezer section with best before date the next day.

I assume its staff, sometimes I grab it, sometimes I leave it

I normally never go to shops at the open but I was caught with Kmart gift cards when I found out they couldn't be used online .
So I'm in the crowd at the doors when it opens and everyone just stays at the abundance of goodies near the front entrance when they open . I go down to the toy section and see around 10 of the targeted items and I don't have a trolley . Remember I'm a vegetable at physical shopping . I place them down a isle where I think nobody going to go , get the trolley and finish the business :)

If I didn't do that move I think I'd still be stuck with sheety Kamrt gift cards .

  • This is possibly the most dumbest thread on OzBargain I have seen so far.

OP, what gives you the right to deliberately move a item from where they are located to a completely different location (unless you intend to purchase the item while you are shopping at the store)?

Future thread from OP: Is it okay to hide discounted items in my shopping bag? :-P

    • it's okay to hide them in your shopping bag when you're taking 5 and buying them obviously

  • With short-dated refrigerated food items at places like Coles and Woolworths, I have often found a perishable item I wanted to buy at the discounted price, but was reluctant to carry around for the two or three hours before I headed home. So my practice was to take it to the check-out, ask if I could pay for it and have it stored until my return, and everyone was happy. That went on for ten years, but, just in the last few months, both Coles and Woolworths have refused to provide that small service, saying "Not our policy". So nowadays, I just move the product to the back of the shelf and take a chance that it will still be there in two hours time (success rate is around 40%). I guess that IS selfish, but perhaps Coles and Woolworths could shoulder a bit of the blame, as their reluctance to have someone walk into the back room with a paid-for and labelled package could be called a little "selfish" also.

    • labelled package could be called a little "selfish" also.

      Hmmmm nah

      • Well, it takes thirty seconds out of someone'e work load twice (storing and retrieving) and absolves them of any responsibility for safe storage. So their policy-change is self-interest, no?

        • +3

Refusing to cater to your sense of entitlement doesn't make one selfish.

          • @Ughhh: Fair enough, but they had no problems with my (or anyone's) storage request for at least ten years (do you REALLY think asking for it is demanding an "entitlement"?), so you can't think me unreasonable for asking! No, wait a minute… I bet you can!

            • +1

@AlanJ: If you've been mowing your neighbours lawn for the past decade (after mowing your own), and one day decided that you can no longer do it, if your neighbour complained to you "it'll only take an extra minute to mow my lawn, and you've had no problems for the last decade, why you being so selfish?" how would you feel? Is he being reasonable?

    • Why not go to the supermarket last…?

      • He was doing a reconnaissance to see if he should go to the supermarket last or go back to the supermarket (might be out of the way based on route) for the perishables.

      • Short-date markdowns tend to be effected at a certain time of day, and if you don't shop at that time, you simply don't see them at all. Ozbargainers know when, as well as where, to do their bargain shopping!

    Useless post

  • Has anyone ever been tempted to hide those Coles Myer gift cards in late October just before Shop Small starts in November?

    • No because you can't buy Coles Myer gift cards with Shop Small?

      • I meant the one where you get $20 back for $50 spend at Westfield

        • That's Vogue Fashion Night Out and only of use if you can make your way to Sydney CBD or Melbourne CBD

Ive seen this a lot with lego at big w and even small packs at woolies shoved right to the back

Have seen this, people hiding things under things in the sliding door chest freezer.

Doesn't happen where I work, cause I'm a ninja and find things out of place pretty quickly, also it's a small shop.
