Audio-Technica ATH-A550Z Closed-back Wired Headphones $169 Delivered @ Addictedtoaudio

50

Umart has same price but is “please let me know when available”.

Notes: Looks like fixed cable, some say clamping force is a bit much for big heads causing pad pressure.
Audio-Technica’s models other than the monitoring series (M40x) are known for their treble boosted sound-signatures.

I can only find the FR for the ATH-A500 which I assume is it’s predescessor.

  • M40x is a known quantity and quality (both excellent). Why bother with anything else?

    • Different league. I am not sure how it is compared to my previous headphone Audio-Technica ATH-A900x, but look wise its similar. Before that I used Audio-Technica ATH-M50. You cant really compare the sound quality of ATH-A900x with even ATH-M50, its just mind blowing. I still regret that I sold my ATH-A900x for more of a portable option.

      • I believe AlexF mentioned the M40x which is regarded as a better headphone than the M50. I cant comment myself as Ive only had the M40x and for the price they are very good.

        • But this post isn't about ATH-M50 right? Its ATH-A550Z. These are basically studio/art monitor series. Having said that, I would probably suggest to put little more money and get Audio-Technica ATH-A990Z instead.

          • @EssendonUser: A990Z is slightly more V or U-shaped apparently, with slightly more bass & top-end extension.

      • cant really compare the sound quality of ATH-A900x with even ATH-M50

M40x is end-game as a closed neutral headphone, with benefit of being designed to withstand studio abuse. There is no shortage of (expensive) alternatives but they will be a waste of money.
