  • I've been a Plex subscriber for 5 years, and have never received one of these offers :(

    • Do you receive any emails from them? I wonder if there’s a tick box in your account or if it is just randomly generated.

    • +3

You never get the email while you pay for it

In b4 a dozen posts whinging about the free, ad-supported, and completely optional and easy to hide, streaming service introduced into their apps.

    • +1

      People whine about that??

      Unpin

      Done.

      • People whine about that??

Big time. On Ozbargain, on reddit. Everywhere.

    • and "they stole from XBMC/KODI"!!!!!!

      • +1

I thought Plex was a fork of XBMC? From what I understand is, the guys who wanted to be taken seriously by content distributors and to make a serious media streaming platform all went on to form Plex. All of the ratbag, eyepatch wearing pirate hacker types went on to create Kodi.

The user experience on Plex is fantastic. Kodi is terrible. Kodi looks horrible, it locks up. The plugins never work correctly and are hard to find, add and get working. While I appreciate Kodi and it's existence, it's garbage.

I stopped using Kodi about 2 years ago and moved to Plex, but I have to keep helping the neighbour out with their Kodi box and it's a terrible user experience. I even gave them access to my WiFi and installed Plex for them, just so they didn't have to put up with Kodi any longer…

And I kind of expected the "BuT KoDi iS FrEE aNd BeTTeR" crowd to turn up.

        • +3

Different demographics. Kodi is currently excellent. However I agree, a lot of plugins are crap. There's no real quality control of the plugins and they constantly break. Thankfully there's no real reason to use any of them besides a convenient subtitle plugin.

Plex is more aimed at serving your media. Across many devices, and it does this very, very well. The playback apps/interface are a secondary consideration.

          • @Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Yeah, nothing wrong with Kodi itself at all but it can be harder to configure properly depending on what you want. None of the pirate streaming addons are worth using IMO because every week or two the authors give up and you then have to install another bloated pile of crap.

Similar with the boxes, they're hot garbage until you flash an *elec build onto them and get rid of the terrible android builds they ship with.

If you can be bothered swearing at your computers you can save your cash but for DLNA and ease of use Plex is the best. I can't remember the last time my dad screwed Plex up and that's saying something because he likes to mess around with every program until they break and I have to go up there and cry for hours. When he did screw it up I think all I had to do was reinstall it over the top.

Anyway, pretty good deal I guess!

        • +2

yea it was a port of XBMC into macos.

I bought into plex pass back in 2016 because I didn't want to spend anymore time managing my media library (album cover, movie metadata etc). I started using plex because it looks pretty and I paid for the lifetime pass because I wanted to support them. Funny enough I paid USD 74.99 (but AUD worth a lot more back in 2016). All the plex perks that come after (starting from 2017 i think) were all bonus to me.

        • Plex is good, but Im not a fan of the layout atm (as in moving about between shows and seasons).

    • This is quite misleading though.

Lets say you run a server and your mum and dad, and other people who don't understand technology very well use it.

If one day, your searches are also showing more movies, that have no Plex labeling, that are also ad supported, you won't know that its not coming from the plex server owner.

None of these people will also know how to turn off the annoying extra services that plex has, its not exactly easy to figure out for the average person.

The only way this works is if you called each person you are sharing your server with and explained what it is, and how to remove it. That is way over the top in my opinion.

What Plex should have done it allow Plex server owners to turn it off for anyone they are sharing their library with.

You might say, its their service they can do what they want, but literally 100% of any revenue or potential revenue only exists because of Plex server owners, without us they won't exist.

      • I'm under the impression other users don't see that new online content….

Only I can see it, where as my managed users can't.

        • +1

Correct, managed users won't see it if you disable it for them, but all shared users will.

        • +1

Yep - there is some control over whether other users can see it:

"Parents or administrators of a Plex Home can also control whether it’s available for managed users they’ve created."

          https://support.plex.tv/articles/video-on-demand-overview/

          • @kirt: Thanks, no idea why it wasn't on by default, but much appreciated :)

      • It's not misleading.

It's free, it's optional, it can be turned off.

If you're dealing with shared users and not managed users then technically that's your problem.

What Plex should have done it allow Plex server owners to turn it off for anyone they are sharing their library with.

Uh, then request that feature? Stop whinging here.

        without us they won't exist.

Yeah, this is the first time in the history of software that a developer has had to introduce a new stream of revenue. * drama hands *

        • That feature is actually highly requested, but goes ignored like most features do.

They would never allow this feature as all their potential revenue comes from forcing new services on plex server users.

          • +1

@samfisher5986: Lol. Now you're being ridiculous.

"Forcing" new services. They are easily, easily hidden. Not our problem if someone you share your library with is technologically dumb.

They don't ignore "most" feature requests, managed users for free users is a prime example that was recently implemented.

Like my verrry first post predicted - some people have nothing better to do than whinge. You love the product so much and share it with others but are still not happy. Just lol.

  • Bah, didn't know I needed it before Christmas and missed that offer, and now looks like I'm not targetted for this offer when I do actually need it!

  • +2

Thanks, mine was in spam folder.
Would have never seen it, and have literally just started using plex

    • Glad to have helped!

  • Interesting read here:

Media streamer Plex to add subscription channels, rentals and more

    https://techcrunch.com/2020/01/07/media-streamer-plex-to-add…

  • for a dumb newbie, what does Plex offer vs Netflix, Stan etc … ?

    • +1

Plex is using your own media and allows you to stream (and transcode) files to devices in your home or mobile.

    • +3

Plex is like Netflix, but YOU are the CEO and YOU get to decide what you put on there.

  • +1

Please help me with this dumb question. I currently run a Plex server on my readynas. I access my media on my TV, Telstra TV and on mobile but I am not a Plex Pass subscriber. I also can access other libraries shared with me. What advantages over their free tier are there for paying the annual fee? I've read their website https://support.plex.tv/articles/200288566-what-is-plex-pass… and it seems to indicate that the apps are only available in the Plex Pass but I use mine on iOS regularly.

    • +3

Multi user support. Handy if you want to keep track of your individual watch history or if you want to manage your kids content. Plex pass also lets you do hardware transcoding.

      • +1

        Just so everyone understands.

The multi user support mentioned here is for multiple users on one device without manually signing out.

You can use multiple accounts, or separate devices as an alternative.

      • To do hardware transcoding with my NAS Device do I need to buy a more expensive higher end NAS Device than a basic server? What would the cheaper NAS devices be that can do hardware transcoding?

    • +3

Plex sync is another feature - sync content to a device for offline viewing

      • +3

^^^^ This is a great feature for those who travel.

        • +1

Only if you aren't a plex server admin yourself, because I've found it much better to just copy the files manually.

  • +1

    Thanks everyone for their explanations.

  • +2

Thanks OP … but no luck (again) w.f.t. being targeted

  • +1

Thanks OP, just checked my span and there were several email in the past but all expired. Will keep an eye on it.
