  • More bezel

    • Thicc bezels are in.

  • +45 to -35 seconds, per day?

I'm no watch expert, but how can they get away with quoting such a wide range? You'd think that it would be accurate to a second or 2, for $450?!!

    • +5

If it was quartz maybe, but that's pretty standard for automatics.

    • +5

This is normal for a mechanical watch.

A high end Seiko Quartz watch will get you +/- five seconds per year.

A certified mechanical chronometer gets you +/- ~6 seconds per day.

      (These are all rough numbers)

The watch on my wrist right now (Seiko SNK809) is -20/+40 seconds per day.

    • in line with the comments above, a mechanical watch with an accuracy of +/- 1-2 seconds per day (with a chronometer certification) would be in the league of thousands to tens of thousands of dollars.

      • I've been tracking my auto Oris for the past week. It's currently running at +0.1 s/d with barely any variation. Got lucky.

Most of my Seiko autos run around +5sec or less

    • Grand seiko with 9f movement is the only mechanical watch to my knowledge that can get close to quartz accuracy. Mechanicals are generally all wide range

      • +1

Grand Seiko 9F IS a quartz movement, usually regarded as a high end quartz. The 9F along with the Citizen Chronomaster HAQ are the most accurate quartz watches made (Citizen has better accuracy).

The GS Spring Drive is a mechanical which is also very accurate as it's regulated by a quartz crystal I believe.

    • They're just being safe, but most of the time you'll get something way better than that especially for a 4R36.

    • That seems normal. I think the Tudor I'm wearing is around 10-15s a day.

    • As others have said this is a normal range for an auto. I have 3 pieces with this exact movement - they are all within +5 - +10s a day. None run slow which is more important, and ten seconds a day or less is around a minute a week. Unless you only have one automatic that you wear religiously, it will stop within a week (generally ~40hr power reserve on most autos, some have ~60 or ~80 but 40 is common) - i.e. wear during the week only, it'll be stopped by Monday and during the week gained less than a minute.

    • I'm not an expert either, but I am a lover of fine wristwatches and I'd say you make a fair comment.
I know there are other considerations other than accuracy when comparing this watch to a Swatch, but the Sistem 51 range does have an in-house, swiss movement accurate to within 7 seconds per day and a 90 hour power reserve, and they start at $210.

Appears to be a good price compared to Ozbargain favourite Starbuy where it is $515.

    • It is , but if someone was going to purchase today i'd make sure starbuy aren't doing a weekend sale that includes this. I don't know if they are or not, but they usually have a weekend sale and they do monitor ozb a bit and might see and beat it.

  • Pay a lil bit more and go Sumo. This thing look big… and is big…

    • Isn't Sumo big too?

      • +3

No. Look like a sub. Does not look as big as what the measurement suggests.

Had the same concern initially. But was overthing it.

        • I've been tempted by that green one many times!

      • +1

Sumo is smaller than you would think, tho on my 24-25cm wrists it looks a little smaller than i'd like. But on normal size wrists it would be quite a nice fit if you like larger watches.

    • +2

The latest gen Sumo is around $900+ though. I've got a Turtle and worn Sumos. The Sumo is much nicer and has sapphire and a 70 hours power reserve. Not to mention the finishing is far superior and the bracelet is 20mm. It does wear smaller than it's specs though.

The latest Turtle can be ordered now with the sapphire, an ugly waffle dial and a hideous date Don't know if it still has an uncomfortable, untapered 22m bracelet.

Perhaps a gen 2 Sumo would be a better comparison and they're similar prices.

  • Just a noob question - why would someone go for this kind of watch?
If you want accuracy you can go with electronic movement (and still have a nice analogue style)
If you want fancytech toy you can go with smartwatch.
If you want to be a snob (or just like watches) you can save bit more and go with way more reputable brand like Breitling, Longines or Omega.
This is just an honest question from someone who has not paid much attention to it until now. Thanks!

    • When your CFO at home won't approve a sub @ 15k and you really want a semi decent mechanic watch.

Personally would not buy anything without sapphire crystal coating. Hence the new sumo is my pick.

      • New Turtle is At coated sapphire too. Sumo is way nicer though.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the MM200.

    • for diving =) and it looks nice on the wrist

Save a bit more? How much more do you think the cheapest Omega is? Seiko IS a reputable brand mind you.
There are hundreds of watch brands around the world. We buy what we like and can afford.

    • breitling, omega, longines - the lowliest longines is ~800AUD on the grey market with minimal warranty. omega is double, breitling double again.

i like them all and seiko, the money just isn't there for me right now. i like the quality and technology and effort that go into seikos and they are practical purchases for me. i won't be jumping on this deal, but if it gets close to $350 i'll buy in a heartbeat - i suspect that will be a while away yet though.

    • Seiko is a respectable brand, even by watch snobs standards. Good quality mechanical watches which are well built, look good, have practical benefits and affordably priced. You step up to something like Longines which is the cheaper of those brands you mention, and you get slightly better build quality, movements and the 'Swiss prestige' but their lower end watches like Hydroconquest don't have a great reputation and I think Seiko's divers look just as good. The higher end stuff like Master and Heritage collection offer good value for money and beautiful designs but you are talking 2.5-5k. Omega Seamaster and Speedmaster are lovely and what most men would love to own, but for $7400 rrp I think I would rather buy a selection of watches than one Seamaster. Maybe some day though. But I love my Seiko's, great everyday watches.

Probably should mention $55 for International Standard Shipping or $135.00 Priority International Shipping with Insurance
