Consider an 8TB was $120 USD ($15/TB) and a 10TB was $160 USD ($16/TB) during Black Friday,
$200 USD for a 12TB ($16.67/TB) is a very decent price :)
(It was $190 USD @ Best Buy US during Black Fri but they don't ship internationally)

It's currently out of stock but it says "Usually ships within 1 to 4 weeks."

No you can't find it on Amazon AU, so you'll need to order from Amazon US
This deal isn't that great if you choose to ship it to Australia,
Item Price: $200 USD
+10% GST +$20 USD
Delivery is around $15-$20 USD
Total price jumps up to around $240 USD (~A$350)

However, Amazon US offers free international shipping to Hong Kong (a tax free country),
It normally takes around a week
So if you have a friend or family who is going to visit HK in late Feb (or a tax free state in the US)
you may ask them to bring it back to Aust for you and saves $40 USD
A friend of mine who is an international student from HK, will return to Aust for Uni in late Feb and she is helping me to bring back 2 HDDs
I am sure you can find someone around

My book is easily shuckable, just look for a video on youtube

I think the price in title should be $350 AUD because we don't all have a friend in HK.

    • Can confirm have no friend in HK. I really doubt most people have friend in HK that's going to travel to oz, in fact.

      • +1

I have a friend in HK that is coming back to town but even then is wayyyyy too much effort to do such thing…

        • +1

Exactly, I have friends there and I know they would say no lol

  • Pretty sure GST is calculated after delivery costs are added.

  • +2

$343 or so delivered, not too much to get excited about.

Still, beats local in store prices for such things.

  • +2

Also, I'm a little skeptical of storing 12TB of data in one WD drive

    • Genuine question, is there something wrong/known issues with WD 12TB drive? The 10TB deals have been very popular. Or do you just mean storing that much data in a single drive that if it dies, you lose everything in one go?

      • +2

storing that much data in a single drive that if it dies, you lose everything in one go?

that'd be my concern. you'd need 2+ and have RAID/backup of the first one.
you could do a backup to the cloud, but that's also expensive & slow.

      • +1

I'm looking at drives like this strictly for backup. My main data is on more expensive internal 14Tb drives. So it works for me with these bigger drives.

    • +4

Which is why you buy another if you actually care for backup?

I'd be skeptical of storing any important data on any drive if I only had 1 copy of it….

    • +4

That's why you always buy at least 2 of every drive.

      • I would agree but don't really wanna spend 2x money to store re-downloadable movies. For critical data i'd agree.

    • +1

Having all eggs in one basket is light headed, but has nothing to do with WD.

      • I have 14 external drives hanging off my machine (not all active at the same time). That includes on site backup drives. Important stuff gets periodically backed up off site. 4 of those are 10TB.

12 TB is nothing when you start going nuts with DSLR action photography or video editing. And that's not the only use for large amounts of storage in a home setting.

Since NBN, it's not worth backing up the internet.

  • Thought it said 200 AUD :(

  • Plus for a well reasoned post.

  • Missing 'what type of drive inside' discussion?

wtf is this deal - shipping to HK is a deal

next thing, shipping to someone in US from a US website is a deal ?

    • +1

Also if you have a friend that works at Amazon you can get staff prices to stack the deal.

  • -5

Its free postage to Hong Kong because there's so many yank contractors out there working on regime change for the good old USA.

wherever there's unrest you'll find the fascist creeps working for them

    • +1

Yes I'm sure the millions of people protesting on the street and the election results reflect the wishes of Hong Kong people to remain in a tightly controlled surveillance state of mainland China.

      • you should look up the real facts - the yanks are paying a media magnate in hong kong well known for seeking to get rid of chinese media controls, and shipping in well known fascist neo-nazis - cia trained even - from all over the world to tool up the dumb students who think they are fighting for freedom.

you are just regurgitating yank news.

  • +1

Shipped to AU roughly on par with a good but not great 10TB price per TB. Worth it if you want more storage on fewer drives.

  • +2

My lightening quick trigger finger gave you a plus vote, but then I read how you've discounted tax via Hong Kong (and sadly had to revoke it).

You've tried to sell the deal well, but the pricing isn't that great when you consider most of us will be shipping it to an AU address.

  • This is unobtainable to probably 99%+ of us here for a good delivered price. Why is this here?

  • -1

Wow, I can't believe there is so many haters comment here
Someone even report it as "Not available to Australia" lol
Have you actually read my post?

It is a deal because it is still cheaper than most local retailer after shipping included
    $320 AUD +Shipping Vs $404 +Shipping on Amazon AU, $518 @ HN

The HK friend part is just a suggestion on how to make it even cheaper
That's similar to, "Hey bring your new iPhone with you to Bali and claim TRS to make it 10% cheaper"
If you are unable to claim TRS because you are not going to overseas, that's no one to blame, or perhaps blame the Howard Government for introducing GST in 2000

Perhaps you guys should spend your time on making new friends from HK (and supporting their democratic movement) instead of leaving haters comment here?

    • You are expecting us obese first-worlders with petty concerns to understand and care for democratic movements around the world? You gotta be kidding me.

    • +1

I know it's a good deal for a 12Tb regardless of anything else mentioned. If you didn't put the Hong Kong suggestion in people wouldn't be as critical. Still about $200 saving off an internal 12Tb.

      • -2

ya, people are just being nasty when they find out they are not as better off as others
but forget it's already a decent deal, dark side of human beings

I like to work on things, not just pointing fingers to others
despite of all these negative comments, I am nice enough and contacted Amazon AU to see if they will bring it to the AU site
they replied they will try but can't promise anything at the moment
        fingers crossed

    • All I can say is Brian help the next generation of cottonballers.

Where are they haters ? A critique of your deal becomes hatred?
Your original deal (see Revisions tab under title) is what they’re criticising.

Take it on the chin. It’s not personally attacking you, just the original deal.

    • quoting HN prices?

      what planet are you from?

    • -1

there is no genuine democratic movement - there is a yank funded regime change operation underway however

  • +1

I don't have a HK friend, can I use yours?

  • So i missed out on this Deal !
