Not Receiving All of The Keys at The Settlement Day for The Purchase of a Property

I Purchased my first home and had Settlement day a week ago which i was told to that i would receive only 2 of the door keys on that day and within 24 hours i would get the rest of the keys however i have not received them yet. Have got in contact numerous times with the Real estate agent however they are saying to wait for the Owner to get back to them.

What should i be doing? Should i make an official complaint?

change your locks anyway, how do you know they haven't duplicated them

    or

ring real estate and tell them they have to 5pm tommorow or will bill them for the locksmith

REA won't care. They've done their job and gotten their commission. It's between OP and the previous owner now.

Whenever I have purchased a house in the past, the first thing that I do is change all the locks.

I like to know exactly who has the keys to my doors!

    • ^^^ This, I'm the same!

    • yep you , your wife, and your mistress

      • And her close friend

        • the wife or the mistress?

Consider writing it off and getting a locksmith to change the locks. It is probably better for your own peace of mind if you are living there. My wife would force me to do it even if we get all the keys.

It is not uncommon to just get the front door keys and garage remote in my experience.

  • Congratulations ! 🏠

I would get the front door and entry door keys rekeyed asap following settlement.

Definitely follow-up re: any other keys - email trail is best.

Should i make an official complaint?

why? The first thing you do when buying a new place, is to change the locks. You don't really want/need the old keys, as you don't know who has copies. So not getting them, doesn't really matter.

    What should i be doing?

Call a locksmith, they'll rekey the place for you, and you move on.

  • Refer the matter to your solicitor (if you want to).

As others have mentioned, get the locks changed anyway.

Im assuming OP is talking about the 'rest of the keys' such as door keys of interior doors, windows, closets etc.
You wouldn't need to replace those generally - but can get a locksmith to create keys for you.

If I were you - I would tell the real estate agent that you are getting a locksmith for getting keys made to all the locks and the realtor has to pay the locksmith bill.

  • Thanks heaps everyone for your comments! I changed the front door key however the main thing im missing is the Garage door remote

First thing I would be doing, is finding a manual for your garage door opener, deleting all the keys from memory, and reprogramming the one you have and a new ones as needed.

If this is all you're missing, buy your own, move on. They're normally under $50 each, so spend $100 and buy two new remotes, instead of stressing yourself out or sending letters of demands or paying a solicitor $400/hr to follow it up. Seems silly to pay a solicitor $400 to get sub $100 in remotes.

Google your model of garage door remote, find the manual, have a read on how t delete/unpair all exisiting remotes, and then train the new ones. It might also be called factory reset.

Don't forget to pair the remote button on the string inside the door if you have one.

  • What should i be doing?

Just change your locks. Just go to Bunnings and get a similar type and you'll be fine.

Should i make an official complaint?

Who are you intending to complain to? The Department of "I didn't get my keys"? This isn't a criminal matter (unless someone is actually breaking into your house). This is a civil matter, so your only recourse is to take the previous owner to court/tribunal for costs incurred by you. Obviously this is a silly thing to do.

    • Yea try Slater and Gordon, but be prepared to lose 80% of any keys recovered.

  • Welcome to the world of useless idiots musical chairs.

Bought an apartment. Got 1 key fob to access the building. Had to ask strata to issue new fobs (at my expense) and strata said there is already 4 fobs which is the maximum per property. Well lucky was able to disable all those (someone is going to be inconvenienced just like I am).

Rental property. Gave them 2 key fobs for a studio apartment. For some reason real estate agent goes and applies for a 3rd and bills me for it.

The only consolation is most of these real estate people sees large sums of money and most of them jumps right in and end up in deep water. I can only guess something to do with lack of attention to detail.

Might just stick to shares. $10 per trade is a lot cheaper than $50 - $70 per fob.

  • We have an electric lock on our front door. We can add/remove codes as we want and blow the whole lot away, if we want to. It means you don't need to make a physical change to the lock, just remove all the old codes and add in your own.

  • file a complaint with fair trading. agents lvoe to be put on their black list!
