    Serious question:
As Southern Phone are the only carrier offering this, is this a bargain?

    • Relative value is pretty good, for certain use cases at least…

  • +6

looks like you can choose to purchase it outright for $29, go on month to month plan at $12, total cost $41

    • +1

      plus 80% cashback

      • We can get 80% cashback just buying the phone from Southern Phone?

        • the cashback is on the phone plan not the phone.

        • You get $9.60 cashback for the plan which you have to get. However it is postpaid and you'll only have to pay $12 if you choose to activate it after getting the phone

    Does it have snake tho?

    • yes

    • A modern remake of it.

Still fun, but not the same.

    Or Bounce ●

    • Man, that game kept me occupied for hours as a kid…

  • nvm oops

What do you need data for? lol

    • MMS apparently, at least on voda prepaid services.

    • If it’s the 4g version it can be used as a WiFi hotspot.

      • really? i thought they didn't have hotspot available in this model and only the new banana phone had 4g hotspot.

        • From what I read a while ago the 4g version has hotspot but was only available in China, however the website claims this uses the Optus 4g network. But as bohn points out the website also says this is the 3g model.

    • First thing comes to mind as well

Imagine using this piece of shit for a day, let alone 24 months.

    • +2

I'd imagine this phone would be a good backup phone, given its standby battery is a month

  • Is it locked to this carrier?

    • +1

Southern Phone doesn’t sell locked devices - all are unlocked :)

  • Only >80 yr olds need apply

    • My luddite Auntie in her mid 70s refuses to join the 20th century and get a mobile - her siblings have been threatening to ambush her and asked what sort of phone to get.

Maybe not a bad choice? I ain't doing tech support over a landline from 40km away!

    • 95+ I reckon

      • hey my 98 year old nana has a smartphone :) (im not sure why though)

  • Good for the oldies

    • +2

It is being pitched at youngies: "perfect first phone for kids who are not ready for a smartphone"

      • +1

Or kids who have no self control and drain their 365 day prepaid data in less than 1 month watching YT clips and TikTok at school.

        • +1

So true haha. I do feel sorry for the kid who shows up to school with one of these in 2020. Basically asking to get bullied lol

@pcox: So have WA state schools .. https://www.education.wa.edu.au/mobile-phones

But only applies during school hours.

            • +3

@pcox: Yeah, look. Phones were banned from bell to bell (recess and lunch allowed though) at my high school 10+ years ago before we were even connected to the internet 24/7. Instant exclusion for the lesson if found to be using one, and a note home. 3 exclusions and you got auto 3 day at-home suspension. Did that stop it? Absolutely not. Can only imagine trying to police this in the classroom today…

Also, phones at school can be used to manage timetables, set reminders, and do many other useful things quickly without pulling out a laptop. They should be teaching kids productive ways to use modern tools, not banning them. Do schools know the real working world uses pocket technology productively (and in many cases, as a requirement)?

  • Anyone knows how to unlocked this phone?

    • Southern Phone doesn’t sell locked devices - all are unlocked :)

  • Funny thing, when you place an order you don't pay any money - says they'll review your order and get back to you within 2 days.

    • Not a large provider is my understanding (100k customers).
They have been / are in the process of being taken over by AGL.

      • the other weird thing is they bill you monthly for a prepaid service.

        • Southern Phone only offers Post-Paid services

          • +1

@rzg: Well that explains it.. for some reason I was thinking the month to month was prepaid ;)
            My mistake.

    Great deal.

I just bought 6 of these for my 14-year-old son. The way I see it, He gets 6 phones and 6GB of data for $66 a month. Bargain!

    Designed for hustlers?

  • I found the shape of the phone awkward to use

  • Southern Phone has worst customer service… I was with them for home internet.

  • We have 2 of these at work for on call phones. I dread the ringtone when I'm assigned to it

  • is this the 4g model of the 3310 or the 3g model?

    • +1

The linked webpage says 'The above plans use the Optus 4G network' - you'd think hope the phone would too.

      Edit: maybe not..

      View all phone specifications
      • 2.4" Display
      • 3G Connectivity
      • Expandable memory up to 32GB
      • 2MP Rear Camera

  • These things are awful, call quality is shit,"apps" hang and the keypad is shithouse.

T9 is horrific, the 8110 isn't much of an upgrade either.

  • Is call forwarding included in the free phone calls? I'm with Spintel for an old phone number that just forwards calls and wouldn't mind picking this up.
