Sony 85" X8500G $3495 + Delivery @ Harvey Norman, The Good Guys & JB Hi-Fi

60

I have been following the 80+ inch TV prices for a while and this model is back up for sale as it was a couple of weeks ago. I am in the market for x2 TVs, have been trying to decide between this and the 82 RU8000 Samsung. Both reviews appear to be good on rtings.com, the Sony 85" model comes with a VA screen which should improve black levels but hard to tell without any specific review of 85" model which is hard to come by. I may end up buying one of each as I have had good experiences with both brands in the past.

Great TV, seems really big for the first week, down side is any tradies, visitors always stop and stare and comment at the TV size, despite it being in a large room.

Anyways, while not FALD it is back lit with VA and not edge lit like the other modems in this range. So a big step-up.
So the blacks are really black, I don't notice and bleading into the black bars or dark scenes.

    Upside:
Good for gaming (although while HDR worked, found I needed a specific 2.0b HDMI cable to get the enhanced HDR RDG colour ranges with the PS4 Pro)
I also enabled Motion Flow for Games, to remove blur from banners in games such as Gran Turismo.
    Good response times.
Amazing 4k upscaling, so the 1080p content (which is most), looks spectacular. That is really what you are paying for.
Apps for Netflix, Plex and Disney are great and very responsive
TV can be bright, I turned down the brightness.
Can't really comment on viewing angles

    Downside:
    No app for Apple TV+
While HDR is good, I find titles with Dolby Vision HDR the best
Some Netflix titles are low bit rates even for 4K HDR (assume this is not the TV)
While Netflix Recommended, the App isn't Netflix Optimised (not that I can tell)
Difficult to find reviews for this specific model with VA backlit panel. The negs with most reviews in the 85G range don't apply to this model as it is different technology.

    • thanks for the review, good to know from someone that has the 85" model. What price did you pay for the TV? Do you think the stores will knock much off the current "sale" price?

        $3,196 from deal posted https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/493195
Plus an additional $31.84 ShopBack confirmed and paid. which I was not expecting, as I used an eBay coupon for the deal. The Purchase came in just days after the updated conditions, so perhaps they had a grace period.

Sorry don't know what discounts stores can offer, what I can say is I am sure this TV and all TV's will continue to get cheaper every year.
I see a few stores have now lowered their prices to align with this deal, so I would assume there may be more room to negotiate.

For myself, I had been looking for a while with a $4k budget so at that price I didn't have to think too hard.
Sure there are better TV's like the 9 series, but I was happy to keep the cash.

Been stalking this exact model for a month. This is the standard price, which is $300 more than previous deal. But, this promotion includes local delivery.

It's a TV, and I'm watching a 10yo plasma. So I'll wait for previous price again.

Just be mindful, this TV rates badly in black uniformity. The X80G and X95G don't have that issue. Here is a sample https://i.rtings.com/images/reviews/tv/sony/x850g/x850g-unif…

    • As discussed above as the 85 inch x8500G has a VA panel (rather the IPS from the other sizes) the black uniformity on this TV is much better. The team at rtings.com also confirm this in their reviews

      • Thats true, I was looking at the 55 inch for this one when I was out in the market to buy one. Thanks for clarifying.

    • 85" Notes (in fairness, speculation)

      • Type: LED
        Sub-Type: IPS (except 85")
        Resolution: 4k

      • The 85" model has a VA panel, and likely looks much better in a dark room, but has worse viewing angles."

      • The 85" model (XBR-85X850G) has a VA panel, and likely has much better contrast.

      • The 85" model (XBR-85X850G) has a VA panel, and likely has much better black uniformity.

      • The 85" model (XBR-85X850G) has a VA panel, and likely has slightly better color volume.

Hey guys just an update. Have pulled the trigger on the Sony 85 inch TV at $3299 and the Samsung 82 RU8000 for $2798 (pricematch Powerland) free delivery at Harvey Norman. I could not decide between both models so decided to get one of each for living room and Lounge room to replace my “small” 70 inch TVs.

    • $3299?
      Your original post says $3495

      • Yes I got HN to knock $200 off to $3299 for the Sony x85g 85 inch at the time. I also have the Samsung 82 ru8000 at $2798 price arched at power land.

    • Which would you say is the better tv? Any chance you could post the receipt, had tried to get HN to match a ebay deal last week they refused. Thanks

      • I think both tvs are comparable and have pros and cons so I got one of each. I needed x2 TVs. I am not sure if you can really notice the extra 3 inches, so I think for bang for your buck the 82 ru8000 Samsung is hard to beat at $2798. If HN don’t price match powerland then you should you should order direct through powerland.com as still at this price.
