I remember a TV of this size costing 10 times as much when it was released.

    • +2

I remember walking into Grace Brothers* at Penrith Plaza in 1999 and seeing a 40" Plasma TV that cost $20,000 :)

40" now sells for around $200

      85" for $3k is awesome

*Grace Brothers re-branded under the Myer name in 2004.

      Yep, Harvey Norman ~2007, 90 inch, $87,000

      Full HD 👍

I bought a Samsung 46 inch LCD TV 1080p for this much back in 2006. And I thought it was huge. I still have in the garage works normally until this day. It refuses to die.

    • +4

      A hammer will fix that.

  • how many inches is enough?

    • +7

It depends person to person, some people like it big as they find it very feeling as satisfying that they are pushing that limit, others like medium and a few of us like it small so it doesn't hurt

      Your wallet.

      • +1

……..and some just don't like any inches at all.

        • +3

…not that there's anything wrong with that.

    • Yes

  • This or the Samsung RU8000?

Anyone in the know care for some pros and cons of both.

    • +2

I can only speak for the Sony as I have both led and an oled.

Love the Android tv interface built in. Upscaling engine is much better than other brands imo.

      • One thing i look for in a tv is the interface and features. So Android interface is good? From experience the samsung has great inbuilt menus etc

        • One complaint in the past was that the android version was slow. The new Android Oreo update has been awesome! You can install 3rd party apps like Plex, Synology apps, straight on.

Google assistant is built in as well.

        • Samsung's newest menus have been pretty good, but horrible in the past. The Android TV experience built into the tv really can't be beat though.

          • @Salmando: I have a 5 year old Samsung 6 series and the interface is terrible. Laggy, doesn't load sometimes, Apps disappear or have to be reinstalled every time I use the 'Smart Hub'. I've heard the new TV's are much better but I've had terrible experience with Samsung support so would probably avoid for that reason.

            • @1st-Amendment: I think I have the same series 6. Seems to update every time I want to use it, and often the 'loading' overlay gets stuck and doesn't go away until I turn the TV on and off. Also drops wifi often.
I hate it, worst tv I've ever had in regards to software. Would rather it not have smart features. Even the apps seem outdated.

I got a 75inch series 7 a week or so ago… It's great! Menus are actually nice, Netflix app much better. Seems very fast and responsive. Quite happy with it, though functionality is still behind what Android TV offers with Sony.

I've had the same experience overall with LG that you seem to be describing. No matter how much people here defend and love LG, they've burnt me too many times. Won't buy another LG product, even if many claim it's the best.

Sony have always been great to me, never let me down.
              Same as Panasonic.

              • @Salmando: I've heard this from a few people about the Sony. When the 65" X9500 goes on sale next time I'll be getting one. The 85" would be awesome but I don't have a room big enough to put it in :)

    • +7

Always go Sony over Samsung when the prices A align.

Parts are equal quality, but Sony have a noticeable advantage in software

      • Great to know, ta

    • I am also tossing between these two, 82" Samsung or 85" Sony for extra $450?

  • Damn I don't even have such a big TV bench!

  • +9

    Please stop posting TV deals!!!!
I will have to stay off the booze tonight to avoid impulse buys like this.
Have a 60” plasma, surely this 85” will pay itself off with power savings..

Well perhaps the mrs will believe that

    • Purchased one, after measuring and finding 85" it the perfect fit for our TV cabinet. 25" inch seems a big upgrade over 60".
I had a decent PayPal balance + shopback 1% pushed me over the edge.
Hope it won't ship with an invoice!! Ebay needs that "Gift" option like Amazon.
The "Gift" option has avoided more than a few domestics.

      • Ain't no way she's gonna believe this thing is a cheap purchase!

      • +1

        Damn, jealous.
I got sucked into the 75 inch deals 2 weeks back, and got one of those without telling the girl.

I want this, but I think buying it counts as suicide this time around, which is illegal, therefore making it an illegal purchase??

I'm going to meditate over a few beers in my man room, which by chance has a wall with the perfect amount of space for this.

FYI: I was wrong about the 1% CashBack, reading the updated T&C's, since the 28th October Cashback is not Valid with eBay coupons or vouchers.

  • The 8500 doesnt have fald does it?

    • fald, it's not, although it is a VA panel with full array back lighting, rather than edge lit, much nicer.

      • Whats the difference between FALD and "full array back lighting"?

        • It is backlighting without proper local dimming, not as good as local dimming but better than edge lit.

  • Do you guys know if the delivery comes from one of your local stores?
Is it one of their delivery guys or auspost/courier?

    • Mine arrived today, was delivered by the local store guys.

  • I wonder what the lowest price ever posted here for this tv is?

  • The 75" X9500G with FALD is going for the same price. Bought one last week when Bing Lee had their 20% off. Awsome TV and built-in chromecast

  • Does anyone know the distance between the stand legs? I want to see if it will fit on my existing bench.

    • Approx. 1438 mm.

1400mm is a pretty common width, so you might be out of luck.
Though 1800 is also common enough

  • How does this compare to the Hisense 85" that was on special recently for about 2800?

    • F

    • It’s Sony

      • Yeah. So what???

Hisense 2 or 3 years ago had better TV's than Sony for half the price.

I am just not up to date on current models.

  • Buy now or wait for Black Friday?

  • Delivery confirmed for tomorrow. These guys don’t mess around!!

  • Bought one any recommendations on a wall mount for this please?

  • +1

I bought this TV about 4 or 5 months ago for around $4000 on special.
It's a BIG TV…for the first week or two.
After that, it looks not so big and you think, hey I could do with another size up.
I have played compressed files-some just SD and they looked fine. I was expecting them to look terrible.

Above wallmount bracket appears to be perfect for anyone considering to get one.

  • This or the TCL 85" P8M for $2096 ($1976 if you have access to 5% off gift cards through Youi and other partners) after cash back at JB? Would the SONY be that much better for the price difference? $

    • +2

I know this is ozbargain where savings is the meta, but spend the extra 1k, the difference between the 2 units is well worth it

    • +2

Don’t spend $2k on a TCL, spend $400-500 on one for your spare room or kids room. Spend a bit more and get a quality TV for your main unit that will last you a while

  • really struggling on deciding between this model and the lower cost Samsung 82" good guys offer. Apart from screen size I can see Samsung allowes HDD Recording and freeview. Doesnt look like sony has these. Cant tell many other differences though

  • Wow
I ordered this yesterday arvo, (saturday)
Just got a call for delivery tomorrow
Funny thing is, i went to good guys instore yesterday and they wouldnt give me the same price so i could get it hung up n setup this weekend

  • Still waiting on delivery date confirmation. Apparently it is on back order with the supplier.

    • I got a call saying no stock and that my order had been cancelled. Couldnt even get them to deliver when it was available…

    • Had mine delivered today. Went in store and had it price matched, they were also running a free delivery and install promo so got free delivery as well :)
