            • @atom1319: I can see Excel and a bunch of MYOB apps in the Play Store for a Chromebook on ChromeOS v79.

            • @atom1319: I have installed the MS Excel app, up and running activated with my Office 365 license.
              No Problem

            • @atom1319: I have not got this Chromebook but I have the Lenovo c340 and yes excel android works, as should excel online. But neither of these are the full fledged thing.

    • +2

      You definitely can.

There are apps available on the Play Store.

For excel you have google sheets or microsoft excel but you'll need a microsoft office year subscription to use it.

For MYOB they do have the app available on the store.

  • +11

Order one online. Arrived within 2 hours. In Perth. I'm freaking out.

Runs great. I've used Chromebooks so I understand what they're for.

    • -2

What do you use them for? Curious to know.

      • +2

Web browsing, word processing. That sort of stuff.

  • Wonder what this is like as a remote dev box? Think ssh (can it do that?) to remote pc, if. Your feeling lucky some Web vscode maybe.

    • +2

vscode will install fine you just need to enable Linux support, add a repo, import a cert, then sudo apt install vscode. Terminal, ssh, are are fine.

  • I used my $250 Prezzee credit to buy a JB gift card. Every time I enter it in the checkout it says coupon does not exist. When I check the balance on the JB website it shows $250. Do I have to wait a bit longet? I got a gift card number and a pin. Tried entering the gift card number with the pin at the start and also at the end still no luck. I’m stumped.

    • +2

I had this a few moments ago with a gift card purchase on one of these. I closed the page and started the process from scratch. Worked 2nd time around.

      • +1

Just figured it out. It’s on the payment page. I was using the coupon option which must be for the coupons you get with this chromebook for example. Cheers.

  • +4

Just bought in store, received a paper coupon code with a heap of restrictions and expiry in june

  • +1

    USB-C for power?

  • Does anyone know if i buy a Jb hifi gift card through AGL rewards does it come instantly?

  • +8

    I just bought one, AMA.

Its a lot of plastic but doesn't feel too cheap. Keyboard is good. I just got it as a knockabout to write articles on, which is quite good because its quiet to type on and I would say the keyboard is actually fairly comfortable to use.

USB-C for power, on left AND the right. Just setting up Linux for chromebook thingo now for VS Code.

Performance is good, boots quick, pretty amazing for the price and the specs really.

One other thing, mousepad supports two finger scrolling and is surprisingly good.

    • Can you use an SD card to expand its storage?

Also, what restrictions are there with downloads? I presume torrents won't work?

      • +2

I think it has a Micro SD slot on the side. Yeah just checked, it does. Plus a headphone jack.

      • +3

Yup! You can use the micro SD card slot to expand its storage.

Also, you can download anything you wanted as you would on any browser since it comes with Google Chrome.

You can torrent as there is an app on the playstore available for it.

    • Can you install MX Player (or something equivalent) on it and play 4k videos?

      • +2

It struggles with youtube at 4k. At 720p it would be okay. The screen is only 1920x1080 so 4k video would be a bit of a waste?

    • Does FB messenger video chat work on this thing? If so, how well?

      • I don't have anyone to video call, but I assume it would work. The camera quality is pretty bad though. Like a constant watercolour. You can make out people/objects etc, but it is maybe like 0.3mp at best.

        • HP spec page says camrea is HD, so it should be at least 0.9mp (1280x720), but it sounds as though the quality is RS.

  • FYI Chrome app are unsupported from June 2022
    https://chromeunboxed.com/google-announces-timeline-for-the-…

    • Not an issue. PWAs are the way forward.

  • For the price, this laptop is DEFINITELY worth it. It would be absolutely AMAZING for playing videos, such as Netflix streaming and YouTube video streaming. The Full HD screen is quite an amazing add on which is extremely rare for a laptop of this price.

Chrome OS will be running on this, therefore, the laptop will be much better optimised for lower specs, however, the laptop quite surprisingly has a whole 4GB of RAM, which is rare since usual cheap windows laptops will come with 2GB of RAM.

Definitely will perform as a perfect low power laptop for video streaming and basic tasks.

BEWARE: Only 32GB of storage - Way to small to store much on. Any buyers will be forced to rely on Cloud Usage

    • No external hdd??

      • Nope, but as stated by eLtrix, you can expand with a micro SD card

        • What's stopping external HDD from being used?

          • +1

@barcer: I'm using an external HDD (which doesn't have an external power supply) via standard USB-A port and it works well with this Chromebook. There is a USB-A port on both sides.

    • +4

Great points but don't forget you can always purchase a micro SD card and slot it in for instant storage.

      • Can easily get a 128gb micro sd card for ~$30.

      • For media storage. Don't think Android apps can be stored there.

  • Can these things do anything outside of basic word processing etc? Obviously they're not going to be able to run things like Photoshop, but could you use them to build a complex powerpoint prezzo or something?

    • +3

I just installed Visual Studio Code for markdown editing, and am installing Android Studio as well……. will let you know how I get on haha.

    • You definitely can - you can download "Google Slides" for free which is the equivalent to Microsoft PP to do a presentation or you can also install Microsoft Office apps but you'll need to purchase their yearly sub service.

      • That's not really installing tho, it's using their 365 Web service

        • You can install the office mobile apps from play store but don’t expect full feature set.

    • +1

I was playing around with FL Studio for mobile (music software) and it ran really smoothly.

  • +1

Just ordered a click and collect!

  • +2

Wouldn't you be able to up the storage with a MIcro SD card. A 128GB Micro SD card can be had for like $25 on eBay.

Plus too 4GB of ram isn't too shabby.

    • Yes

  • Had a $200 JB voucher from my CC, amazing!

  • I’m going to be giving Jira and confluence classes. So this might work out very well. I guess I could buy three in store, get $300 and buy two with shipping online.

  • Ideas please. I was thinking of getting this for my brother, he needs it to do invoices for his small business, so an excel/word type of template, I guess he'd need to be able to export as pdf. Plans on carrying it around in his ute.
Reading through, seems many are saying this wouldn't be good for him.
He doesn't want to spend more than he has to. He literally only wants it for this purpose. Any suggestions on what I/he should be looking at.

    • +4

Should be fine, especially if he switches to sheets (google) instead of excel.

  • +1

Just bought one and writting this review using the machine :)

For the price its a brilliant machine - specially the screen is awesome for this price.

Performance is not the best but I am able to use Netflix, Kayo android apps etc without any issues. Youtube at 1080p can stutter a bit but no issues at 480.

Volume levels are also very decent.

Overall for the price I'd definitely recommend this

Also, the $100 discount is off all chromebook machines at JB and not just this one. Incase anyone wants to have a look at a different machine.

  • What SD card capacity does this Chromebook support?

    • +4

Not sure about the capacity but I just inserted my 256GB card from the camera in this machine and it works fine

      • Thanks! Good to know!

  • this device is indeed cheap, i am typing this on my HP X2, it really makes one wonder why the hack google would stop supporting premium devices with more than enough computing power to run chrome OS way past 2026!

These devices are great for school work, in theory, cause it stops kids from using various software and confine them to the web for homework. these are netbook of the 2020s, cheap and functional.

My first chromebook has 8GB ram core i3, cause about the same price as this one, i can fire up 10 taps and various other software with little issues. The CPU power of this system is roughly 3/5 of that in the HP X2, hence it should be able to handle majority of task throw at it for the cost. Just it is unfair for these to have longer software support when much more powerful ones gets ditched.

each chromebook has different googleplay store restrictions, some can install high end games, some cant. The X2 can do linux, but my other i3 bigger chromebook cant do linux, and on paper the i3 has more powerful CPU and GPU than the X2, which puzzles me.

new up coming chromebooks release in 2020 will have 8 years of support, that is if Google is still alive and not self destruct under its own weight!

    • I have a 2013 Chromebook Pixel and it was a bitter pill to swallow late 2018 when it became EOL, as the spec on that thing where crazy. 4GB, i5 Processor, 2600x1700 touch display, 4G LTE etc. So ended up installing CloudReady on it and gave it a second life. Hopefully this will be able to done to other Chromebooks as they reach EOL from Google

  • +2

I, like many, am seriously considering buying this. But 100 bucks from JB that has to be spent by June is probably really only worth 50

    • +1

wait for the right product and sale I guess. I've had some of the best purchases from JB (specially their email promotions) including this laptop/chromebook :)

    • Hopefully some google hub deals to spend it on!

    • +1

Buy it online. The Gift Card does not expire, unlike the Coupon.

With that said, not sure whether Click and Collect attracts the Coupon or the Gift Card, so might be up for a delivery fee.

      • Can you please confirm this?

        • +1

I went n for click and collect it seems if you buy online you have to wait till the gift card is sent to your email

    • The worst part is the coupon is just a discount code and it need to be used in 1 transaction or you will lose the remaining value and with those disadvantages I mentioned above.

    • +3

You could buy one chromebook and get a $100 voucher, then come back later and buy another chromebook using the $100 voucher, then come back later and return the first unopened chromebook with the $100 voucher from the second purchase?

      • Wouldn’t you need to return the $100 voucher when you return the Chrome Book?

        • Re-read my comment.

          • -1

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: yeah that's kind of genius, took me a few trys to get it, but yeah, $35 chrome book.

          • @Typical16-bitEnjoyer: I’m confused. They may not allow the return of the first Chrome Book if the $100 voucher has already been used, otherwise it’s $100 of free money if they did.

            • +2

@silverrat23: you returns laptop 2's coupon with laptop 1 after using laptop 1's coupon to buy laptop 2.

              • @Nalar: This only works if the receipt does not record the laptop serial number.

              • @Nalar: Why not buy 2 chromebooks separately, get 2x $100 vouchers. Then buy a 3rd chromebook with the 2 vouchers (if you can use more than 1 voucher in 1 transaction). Then return the first 2 laptops? $39.20 laptop + $100 voucher? Or buy 3 Chromebooks, 3 vouchers, buy 4th Chromebook + $60.80 item and get them free + $100 voucher?

                • +1

@CVonC: Why stop there?!? We could be drowning in cheap lap tops by weeks end!!

                  • @Nalar: lolz just read the restrictions, can't use in conjunction with any other coupon :(

                • +2

@CVonC: You'll need to return the voucher with a chromebook. It won't work like you've suggested.

      • I guess that would work, as lon as they don't have a way to clue on to it

      • I assume this is a change of mind return. Do you simply return an unopened Chromebook with the receipt within a given time?

  • +2

Just picked this up, it's a great little unit. Although cheap it feels good in the hand, keyboard and trackpad feel great and screen is very good.
Coupon is valid until June and must be spent in one go.

    • Can the coupon be used in-store and online?

      • The Store can not be used on the same day it doesn't become active until the day after purchase and has to be used instore as they need to scan the barcode.

        • +1

is the barcode written on the receipt? or anything on receipt that matches the coupon?

    • Is the screen really IPS - does it look good even at an angle?

      • +1

        SCreen is great.

      • +2

The screen is awesome indoors. Its glossy so you'll get reflection on the screen if you use it outdoors. Overall very impressed for a screen on such a cheap machine. Better then some of my more expensive laptops.

the only issue with the machine is its ability to multitask because of the low specs. Awesome for surfing the net with a couple of tabs open, netflix, kayo etc.

  • Can anyone confirm whether it's a touchscreen? Thanks

    • -5

      previous comments answered this….

    • +5

      No it's not a touchscreen.

      • +1

Haha, "Nalar" above's comment used more letters than yours to not answer the question like you did

( although technically he's correct, just not very helpful at all lol ).

        • Coulda just written No. Two letters.

  • Thanks OP, bought one for travelling

  • +1

Guys, I used my instore coupon online today successfully, the code is written under the barcode

  • +1

Silly question perhaps but what is the largest MicroSD it supports?

    • +2

Someone above said it took a 256. I would get it could take a 400 which I think is as far as they go now, but 256 is a decent insurance policy on that if not
