No More Listing of Half Price Items from Coles and Woolies

Those in Ozbargain for long might have also noticed there used to be someone posting a long list of half-price items from Coles and Woolies every week. But I have not seemed such deals for quite a while. They were quite helpful and gained a lot of upvotes every time.

Do anyone know why no such deal is posted now? Is it due to the legal issue that you cannot post such data? I would like to PM the person to ask but cannot find the old deal anymore.

I am also wondering if it is legal to use such data for example in a phone app. The data might be manually collected from supermarket weekly catalog, or from their website, or from the server the supermarket phone app is communicating?

Well Samwise Gamgee is still doing Coles.

Savas used to do Woolworths and sometimes IGA hasn't logged in, in nearly a year.

Savas did a great job - does anyone know what happened to him? He just suddenly stopped posting - I hope he is okay…

I've tried a different one, Price Off.

Can filter the specials by % off amount. Woolies, Coles and for some reason an extremely limited range from Chemist Warehouse.

Woolworths has a 1/2 price section on its website.

  • What possible legal issue are you talking about?

You are welcome to make such a post and it would be valued.
Be the change you wish to see in the world.

  • I just go to the Woolies site which has the 1/2 price items already set out.

    Wish Coles had the same.

      • Thanks for that.

Do you just literally search for string 'half price specials'?

        • You're welcome!

You can do that otherwise just go to their home page & click on '1/2 Price Specials'

      • The only problem is you have to wade through pages and pages of variations of each product. The listing here just showed one of the particular product and we all know the different flavours would usually be also be on sale.

        • You can create a shopping list online and check what's on special that way

      • This doesnt work anymore!! :(

I think it only worked for a short time.

You can now search for 1/2 price specials using 'coles-weekly-specials'/clicking on the 'Specials' tile however the results do not cover everything that is reduced 50% which is weird.

Woolies online is so much easier to navigate.

  • Thanks guys for your comments. I thought the data is owned by the companies so we are not allowed to post it or use it to make profit out of it (like making mobile apps)

Specials once the catalog is live are public information.

In fact, they probably hope you spread the word.

    • I don't think Colesworth would complain about free advertising.

    • What does owned mean here? This certainly isn't a trade secret, and it doesn't seem like something that would be copyrightable, there's no creativity.

      • It depends more about how the data is being used. If its used to plagarise pricing - that would be something that would fall under copywright. It its used as a public service announcement for personal usage then its really used as a public good.

Fuel comparison sites are another example and even mandated by state governments
